We're going to get a faster iPad 2 with a Retina display. If you expect anything else, you're really pushing it.

Yep, and it worked on all iPhones.

It was hilarious when, after the 4S announcement, I opened Siri to get movie tickets and it popped up a message saying "I'm going to be moving to the iPhone 4S next week, and then I'll stop working for you@@!@!!!! :troll face:"

But yeah I'm not concerned about that, Apple have kept secrets in the past. With all the talk of retina it would be nice for Cook to have his first 'boom' moment with haptic stuff. His first big launch was the 4S, which was somewhat low-key for a few reasons. iPad 3 could be a spectacular reveal for him, and retina plus spec bump isn't enough. It would be great, but not spectacular, because we're all expecting retina and spec bump at this point. Haptic tech would push it into the realms of 'wow', and 'goddamn, they've done it again'.

However, we now have hope for real haptic feedback beyond buzzing the motor. It'll happen, eventually.

Retina would be enough to make a 'boom'. Would instantly make every other tablet display look like garbage. I can't believe everyone here is setting themselves up to be disappointed. Haptic touch never even OCCURRED to me before this thread. Why not assume it won't be there- and if it is- it would be a huge bonus? Oh, that would be too logical. Need to churn the hype machine so we can inevitably be disappointed.

Damn it, you got my quote before the edit! Either way, if the rest of the rumors are true (Retina, Quad-core CPU, LTE) then Cook will have a hell of a product to announce.

Look guys, a retina screen is something HUGE, implies a lot of shit, and we all know it will make this iPad. I doubt Apple has the need or the will to add more new shit to it to drive an unnecessary cost increase (and margin decrease), as the screen will already be enough strain to them costs (edit: and to grant an insane demand).

Next year when screen will cost significantly less, maybe then they'll be willing to add more innovative and potentially expensive hardware shit to the iPad. Although I'm suspicious they'll milk it one more year and just make an incremental upgrade (quad-core and radios) on the iPad 4.

Sci-fi shit (anything 3D, projection, feedback, styluses, you name it) will make it by the iPad 5 imo.

Nah, look at all the haptic talk on the last few pages. It might be nice to have, but we're all expecting this now. What would really be good is if on top of retina and haptic tech, it also comes with a 3D glassless OLED screen, 50% thinner, EIGHT cores, with thunderbolt ports and wireless syncing and twice the battery life. Anything less would be a huge disappointment.

Why does the invitation imply we would need to touch the iPad 3?
We all own apple products, iPads, iPhones. We know what they are and how they feel. Nothing new there. It's glass.

This makes me think the touch is going to be something haptic related, i'm boarding the hype-train!

Hehe. I won't be disappointed if there's no haptic tech. I sold my iPad 2 a few days ago in anticipation for this launch - if it's higher res, more powerful while maintaining battery life and weight, I'll be happy.

Haptic? Would be cool. Then again there goes your battery life & there goes haptic since this is a company known to not sacrifice battery life in the name of features.

I also would have elected at least some kind of leak or rumor about this before hand. It would be completely out of the blue.

In other news my 32GB Wifi 3G iPad is on sale for 599$ eBay buy it now :D

your touches and interaction with the device become much more accurate because it reacts more like a real item instead of a cold piece of glass.

Its also more immersive, allows for greater development freedom/innovation, and makes a product just generally nicer to use.

Were I an Apple executive, I would be pursuing this relentlessly. Then again, this has been the case since long before the iPhone launch, and all we have seen in production devices are lame vibration-motor haptics.

No, that was not my intent and attempt at a troll. It was more of a comment on how I really don't give a damn for a tablet because I feel tablets are essentially the exact same thing as a smartphone, just without the built in phone portion (in some cases). I have a smartphone, so I don't need a tablet from anyone. "Despise them to such an extent" is no where even really implied that post.

"every single company might as well just quit making tablets and phones" is a sarcastic comment. "I will still avoid it, but people will eat anything Apple throws them." Somehow that turned into a derogatory comment called "iSheeps" and "Sheepies"... but yes, I will still avoid an iPad... just like I will avoid all the other tablets out there because I don't need one and I don't want one. However, I am still interested in the tech involved in them. Apple has, over the past while, become the biggest tech company in the world and that absolutely plays a factor because it has extreme brand recognition... nowadays, people will buy Apple products because they have an Apple logo... the logo that is sign of quality and the name plays a huge factor. Not many companies can compete with that type of recognition. My point is that the name and logo are a symbol of quality and people will jump to that because they are know that logo.

Maybe I should have been more clear... but don't panic.

Regardless, I am interested in seeing the new iPad to see if they do pull off some sort of haptic feedback for the screen. It'll be a technical marvel for them to be able to pack that tech into it and still have the insane display resolution, along with everything else that is supposed to be there. Hell, 3D might even be a part of it if those patents are anything to go by. All the eggs into one basket... might as well.

I would be absolutely shocked if they implemented haptic feedback. If they do then I must say that Apple is amazing at staying ahead of the curve and not being complacent.

I doubt it though, I mean some leaks should have come out by now if they are implementing something so revolutionary.

eBay's iPad trade-ins up tenfold from same time last year

With the anticipation of a new iPad being just around the corner, more people have been trading in their first- and second-generation Apple tablets, eBay says.

This afternoon, the company said it's generated more than 125,000 tablet trade-in offers this month, with 97.6 percent of those consisting of Apple iPad models. That number is up tenfold from the number of offers during the same month last year, eBay said.

Those offers are for the online commerce site's Instant Sale program, which differs from its auction services by giving gadget owners a way to trade in items for cash. Users describe the quality of their item, and eBay picks up the shipping cost, as well as the job of wiping whatever data is on it.

eBay says 7.3 million trade-in offers have been made since the program's launch. Along with Apple devices, the program also accepts other electronics, though the company says iPhones, iPods, and iPads have represented the majority of trade-ins.

That more people are trading in their iPads now than this time last year shouldn't be too much of a surprise. In February 2011, the first-generation iPad had been out less than a year and had suffered considerable supply shortages that pushed availability back several weeks for those looking to get their hands on one. By comparison, Apple sold 32 million iPads last year, with the majority of those being the second-generation model--a device that had supply problems of its own.

First-generation, Wi-Fi-only iPad models are among the most popular models being traded, eBay said.

eBay has historically provided a unique view into the international sales demand of the iPad, with the company publishing a chart last year depicting where people were reselling the second-generation tablet in the two weeks after its launch. While the majority of those devices remained in the United States, eBay's data showed which countries were buying it up ahead of local launches. That data also included a breakdown of which models were the most popular (something Apple does not disclose).

Below is a full ranking of which iPad models are pulling in the most trade-in offers, as well as the top five non-Apple tablets offered for eBay trade-in:

God you're tiring. And no, it couldn't have. Its a small miracle they'll be able to push all those pixels at all. Your 'Retina display' made up of some weird ratio of the current resolution to hit some random dpi will never happen.

Better yet, combine the haptic touchscreen from Disney Research or Senseg with Immersion's new HD Haptics where the entire device seems to provide localized and precise haptic feedback. Shake your phone like it's a maraca, and feel the beads move around individually. For bonus fun, add a painted wood texture to the image of the maraca itself.
