Don't forget, he compared Tim Cook to Gil Amelio. That's high level Apple trolling. Lol.

We haven't seen a villain this dangerous in a while.

It's so confusing that his claims of Tim Cook running Apple into the ground happen literally less than 4 months after Jobs died. The length of time it takes for tech products of this scale to be designed, developed, and tested means every single product Apple releases in 2012 was developed under Steve Jobs. iPad 4 is likely already in development right now for example. the Screen Rez for iPad 3 was almost assuredly locked before Jobs even stepped down as CEO. These weird rants of his are more strange in how factually impossible they are more so than than just the trollish nature of them.

"omg omg he's such a troll, why does he keep coming back?"

Because you're still giving him the attention he needs and still try to discuss with him?

You guys are just trolling yourself.

That pales in comparison to the stupidity of him gloating that he sold all his Apple stock a while ago. Which makes it seem impossible that he actually believes what he says and is not a troll. Who the fuck would be giddy they sold their stock? In what universe did he benefit from that? The one where it hasn't been skyrocketing for the past several months with no signs of slowing down?

Hey sorry to go too off topic, but how do pre orders usually work with apple? Like, is it usually at midnight / 3 in the morning type deals?

Some friends of mine keep saying I should just wait in line at an Apple store, but honestly...with a wife, child, a job, and the closest Apple Store just over an hour away....I'm perfectly content to just pre-order online.

That said, are there material advantages for paying for faster shipping? Or does free shipping from Apple still get the launch product to you at a reasonable timeframe (ie., at or shortly after official launch)? I remember reading about shipping issues with either the iPad 2 or one of the recent iPhones launches...can't remember. Basically Apple refunded shipping charges because free shipping was arriving before those who had overnights. It wasn't a large scale issue...just causes me to consider whether it's worth the extra cash to pay for 2-day or overnight.

Yea, sometimes even when the event is still going on.

I miss the old days of having Steve saying that we could buy the stuff right that moment.

Those were lies. He'd announce a new macbook, then I'd walk down to my local Apple Store and have to wait like half a day before they finally got the shipment in.

Waiting a couple of days makes a lot of sense, and I can see why they do it this way now.

Certainly this is correct.

While I can't speak for others, at least in my case it's an expression of surprise and confusion. I've centered my replies on the specific technical/definition issues with what he's posted, but as many have pointed out, there are a handful of other similarly blatant trolls he's repeatedly showered upon gaf.

When you also consider the related threads where he's continued to recount the same obvious FUD ... it's practically reached bot level in its monotony and regularity. So my confusion comes in wondering just how this has continued to occur? Especially given his junior status?

I can't believe you're advocating for a user to be banned just for expressing his opinions in a relatively inoffensive manner; if he doesn't believe the iPad 3 to be "retina" due to it not being 300+ PPI than so be it.

Leave him alone, don't attack him and than advocate for his banning simply because he defends himself.

How is it opinion what the average human eye can and cannot discern at a given distance? Banning may be excessive, but he's not expressing opinion, only ignorance.

Because that's not how it's actually gone down.

It's one thing to be misinformed. I'm wrong plenty of times. Everyone is. It's another thing entirely to have the correct information presented to you DOZENS of times (especially for a non-subjective detail where an actual correct answer exists) ... and then continue to post the incorrect info, as fact, over and over and over again.

That is not relatively inoffensive. That's intentional trolling.

Leave him alone, don't attack him and than advocate for his banning simply because he defends himself.
He was never 'attacked' until it became very clear he was intentionally trolling. And he isn't defending himself - he's baiting people by intentionally doubling-down on known FUD.

And I'm not someone who routinely wants posters banned, but this is becoming a pretty extreme case. I can live with some level of ignorance, but this has continued across multiple threads and involves dozens of posts well after being corrected by multiple gaffers - many of which took the time to find direct quotes, formulas, etc to show exactly why he's wrong.

I think there would have been a different opinion of the poster if he/she would have expressed their opinion as "I really wish iPad 3 had a higher DPI" rather than something like "so guys, you know the iPad 3 isn't retina...by the way...it's not retina...I can't wait for 4G LTE but too bad it's not Retina..even by Steve Job's own definition it's not retina" like over and over again when that is FACTUALLY incorrect. It's just more annoying than anything. It's like an annoying person just butting into a conversation spewing blatantly obvious falsehoods.

Again, if he/she kept saying "Too bad it's not a higher DPI" or something...that would be totally fine because that's an actual opinion. Stating incorrect facts isn't an opinion...it's just being an idiot. We have tried and tried to help him understand that the display in iPad 3 IS A RETINA display. It might not be of high a DPI as he/she would prefer, but to just ignore all help is just...eh whatever.

Somewhat unrelated.

I spend most of my computing time on my macbook pro with the screen about +10inches away from me. I have no complaints about the text on display. But will I notice any real improvements if it were a retina display e.g. reading a document? I'm very curious about seeing this on the iPad screen. First app I'll boot up will be iBooks.

If the resolution on your MacBook Pro were doubled, you would absolutely notice the difference at 10 inches. You would think your old screen is trash.

I read many things in Japanese and the higher the resolution the nicer it is to read and discern characters.

What a predictable response from you. Shocking you would blindly defend him, feign outrage, and misrepresent what's actually happening. This has nothing to do with a matter of opinion, which would be painfully clear if you actually read his posting history in an objective manner. No, not so shocking, since more than once you've referred to Apple as 'crapple'. Quite a troll team both of you make.

I went with standard and I think I received it by the end of the week it came out. The main thing was just ordering it fast enough, I got my order in around midnight or whenever it first started, I think people ordering in the morning may have been ok too. After that there was a bunch of drama about estimated ship times and everything, I remember seeing 2 weeks estimated at one point, but it was all constantly changing. As long as you get your order in early I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I don't read Japanese but it's a similar thing with any text either with lots of small details, or just viewing at small font sizes. Like iBooks at the smallest font size is more or less legible enough size wise, it just kind of looks like shit right now cause the limited resolution.

As do I, I'm just passing on the info I saw on MacRumors. I think that if they were to cut it down to just two iPad 3 models they'd go with the larger two.

Unless they don't think they can price a 32GB Retina Display iPad at $499-which would be a hell of a feat. Maybe Apple has data that shows that the 64GB model can be sacrificed, as its sales pale in comparison to the other 2? If they're gonna hold on to the iPad 2 for a while, they're gonna need to streamline the models to maintain that production efficiency. There's already what, at least 18 models in terms of colors, capacity, 3G etc. IMO the best option might be to cut the 32GB model. Just have 16+64.

If they really wanted to cut down on devices wouldn't it be easier to include 3G in all of them, kind of like how the 4S comes with GSM and CDMA?

So my friend ordered some cheapo stylus's (stylii?) off Amazon. He gave one to me. I'm fiddling around with it on my phone. Its really cool and fun. I hope official stylus support is forthcoming.

Perhaps the weirdest thing is that typing with it on the phone is actually kinda fast and easy. I feel like fat homer with his dialing wand.

In other words your fingers are too fat for the iPhone keyboard? (now if only Siri would say that)

I'd like to use a real stylus too, one of my top wishes really, not that I expect it. Doesn't even have to be standard with it, just optional purchase with built in support like the hardware keyboard!

Wellt his rumor just popped up again on Mac Rumors and it got me wondering...

iPad-Mini-comparison-t.jpg

...With the device rumored to carry the same 1024x768 resolution of the iPad 2 but at a smaller physical size [7.85-inches]...

I don't know all the fancy mathematics to figure this out, but if they shrank the iPad down to that size, but kept the current iPad's resolution, would that give the iPad Mini a Retina Display?

I was actually wondering this a few weeks ago when the rumors came back the first time but I forgot to ask.

Also how terrible is it that I want one? There is like no reason for me to get one - I already have an iPhone 4 and an iPad 1, and plan to get the iPad 3, but something about an iPad that size, I don't know. Something inside me just wants it.

DigiTimes doesn't really know shit. For the sake of discussion though, XGA at 7.85" is only 163 ppi.

Ah, ok. Yeah I don't really believe that Apple will make one but I was just curious if that'd make it Retina. What resolution would a screen that size have to have to be certified Retina? And would doing that just completely fuck everything up with current app compatibility?

It must have the resolution that apple wanta to call retina. there is no criteria for marketing terms.

I love this quote from 9-5 Mac concerning the latest Digitimes rumors:

Over the past 24 hours, Digitimes has posted a series of reports each a bit more outlandish than the ones previous to it. They’ve been right on some stuff in the past but lately it doesn’t seem like they are even paying attention anymore.

I went with standard and I think I received it by the end of the week it came out. Ah, ok. Thanks. I'll definitely get a pre-order in as soon as they go live. I don't care if it's 4am or something crazy. Looks like I'll just go with standard shipping.

So suppose that there is an 8GB iPad? What's the typical App size? I'm looking at something primarily for web/email/books on the couch plus occasional movies on the road trip. I think I could get by with 8GB.

If the price difference is ~150 or more between an 8GB iPad 2 and the 3, I think I might get that. If the difference is less then a $100, I don't think it makes sense.

Can you get by with 6GB? Because right out the box, iOS will take 2GB...

I wouldn't buy an 8GB iPad 2 at any price.

Thanks for this.

I'm not a troll. I express my views and don't engage in hit-and-run or superficial posts to even earn that qualification. I believe what I write, and the offer of a math lesson won't change my view that only a ~300 PPI display should be considered Retina-classed. Some of you have been humorous and respectful in disagreeing, others not so much.

And while I don't agree that the reported specs of the screen deserve it to be called a Retina Display, it's still enough of an upgrade that I'll still purchase the device when available.

And in response to what someone else typed, yes, I've tried to respond to every polite counterpoint thrown my way, no, I don't like Cook's stewardship of Apple, never liked Gil, yes, I am always chill, hence the name.

Out of curiosity, what does a 16-bit or 8-bit game with obvious pixels look like at 1:1 on a retina device where pixels are indiscernible?

Incredibly well defined pixelated sprites. They don't get less pixelated because of retina. In fact, the bigger screen size means MORE pixelation. It'll just be incredibly clean looking.

An 8GB iPad is such a dumb idea. I don't believe it. Why would Apple go backward? 64 GB or 128 GB or bust.
