Just finished the 2nd season and I'm pretty crazy for the series. Which book does the 2nd season end off at? I'd like to start reading the series and I'd prefer start where the series left off as I'm rather busy these days.

You'll be very lost if you try and start reading from the third book after only watching the first two seasons on TV.

The books and the show are different things. If you want to read the books start from the first.

This should be the stock answer whenever this question is asked. I've said in the past that you could skip the first book if you watched the first season and all of the content from the BR set (even then you'd still miss stuff) but skipping the second book and relying on the show is just crazy talk.

I want the scene where Joffrey tries to call Tywin a coward for hiding in his castle while Robert won the rebellion after Tywin tried to give him helpful advice about the power of making friends out of enemies. That was one of his Joffrey-est moments to me.

Storm of Swords is what the next two seasons of the show are based on. You won't like it if you haven't read the other two first.

Start from the second book (A Clash of Kings). If you start from the third book, well.. don't say we didn't warn you.

You could probably get away with skipping the first book, as the first season was a very good, and direct, adaptation. Not so much with the second season. That said, I still would not recommend it. There's enough nuance in the first book that you should read it. The finer details the show left out.

The second book is a must read. Little dry at times, but it sets so much up, that you really need to read it to prepare for book 3. The second season changed a lot, and left out things as well in the interest of speeding things along.

Yea, it's posted all the time but your not doing yourself any favors by skipping the first book. Its relatively short and honestly you're better off reading them in order because you're not going to want to go back and read GoT after reading the others

ADWD spoilers and speculation
Shireen is pretty minor, but a lot of readers speculate her role, or more specifically her greyscale affliction, is going to become rather significant in later books (possibly that the Others can control those afflicted with greyscale, living or dead). Perhaps GRRM hinted this to the showrunners and they decided to cast her.

They're adding his wife too. That theory may be correct but I think they just want to add more depth to his character so they're adding some new characters for him to interact with.

Start with the second book. I was in the same position as you, and gained literally nothing from reading the first book. It felt like I was just watching the first season again. That said, the second book is good and you'll be lost without it, and the third is amazing. 4th is... well. I'm not done with it yet so I'll hold off on my review. It's cheaper to get the 4-pack than to buy 2-4 separately, but I'd still skip the first. People here will tell you crap about world-building or whatever makes the first book worth it, but it really doesn't make a difference.

I didn't start reading the books until after season 1, and the extra history and monologue detail made reading book 1 well worth it for me. If all you care about is major plot advancement, then why not just read cliff's notes of all the books?

It's not just about major plot advancement. Reading book 1 immediately after finishing the show was incredibly boring. It wasn't different enough to warrant reading. I'm not the sort of person that likes to rewatch things. I've only seen my favorite movie of all time once, despite owning it.

To some people the first book has enough going for it to set itself apart from season 1... Just because YOU don't think so does not mean someone else would. There IS a lot more to the first book than the first season leads you to believe
most notably bran's dreams, as well as Tyrion actually participating in the battle, or Sansa's part in Ned's betrayal
Will you be lost completely going into Book 2 without having read book 1? Absolutely not, season 1 does a great job of following the book, but that doesn't mean you aren't missing out on some character defining moments.

Been watching Breaking Bad, and I've now watched three episodes directed by Michelle MacLaren and I'm very excited about her joining Game of Thrones. Very impressive work.

Character defining? I found that to be by far the most uncharacteristic and unbelievable section of the whole damn thing. As far as I'm concerned, that was the show fixing the book. Completely ruined my suspension of disbelief when I read that.

I found book one a bit boring, too, reading it right after watching season 1, and I think in season 1 at least the show did actually improve on several things in the book. However, after having read the whole series thus far, I'm glad I pushed through book 1. The backstory and history is valuable, and adds depth to everything that happens later.

Given that they made one of those characters more likable on the show, and the other one not only is more likable but has a lot more screen time than he did on the books... yeah, he should be worried. It shall be glorious.

Agreed. Robb's little presence in the book made his death kind of obvious to me. Catelyn's came as a surprise though.

if his vault was empty... how did he actually have the money to maintain his lifestyle and position of power? Or was he just a pawn of the House of Undying?

paperback should be cheaper, just ordered it today for 12€ (and plus 3 shipping...) since it seems the damn thing is on loan in every library in the country, christ feels like everyone is reading it (the translation just came out like a month ago and the stock for the english versions is rather low and also loaned out) -.-

first book I bought in ages

My take was that he was still as rich as all getup, but that he wasn't nearly the richest man in Qarth, not by a long shot. Likely, all his money was in his business (ships).

He used that vault and the stories told about it to build up a reputation for himself as immensely rich and thus extremely powerful, which would have the double effect of intimidating his enemies into inaction against him and opened up more opportunities for him as a businessman.

Maybe one day he planned to actually fill that vault, maybe not. Regardless, it would have been a useful tool to help him project an image of power, which plays into the themes brought up in Varys' speech to Tyrion about power being a trick of shadows on the wall.

They really didn't get a lot of nominations to be honest.

I agree that Alfie Allen was the standout this season and not Dinklage. Nominating Dinklage again feels like just a token nomination so the show can have something in one of the 'serious' categories.

Yeah the only thing that potentially should have been nominated was Alfie Allen. This should have been Tyrions seasons, but it never really felt like it. Theons storyline was about the only thing that measured up.
