GTA V [TRAILER #2] - Talk Thread

Not to mention clunky and unfair. So much needless time wasted because of unfair cop car spawns on the edge of city-spanning wanted areas. Mafia 2's sounds more in depth, but also a little too easy to duck wanted levels, depending on how many phone booths/safehouses litter the town(s).

Agreed. I hated being in the middle of nowhere and shooting a pigeon and then having random cops spawn near by because I shot my gun. Realistic? sure, fi someone shoots a gun anywhere it's likely that police may show up ... but it penalized players for exploring. Want to blow up your car in the middle of a dock just for fun? Better run away from the police before being arrested.

You don't need to, he is.

Maybe it's just me I guess but his style doesn't really annoy me or belittle me. He's written character's in GTA IV for example that I can really relate to in real life.

Would David Chase and Vince Gilligan really be better videogame writers than Dan Houser? Writing for a videogame is much harder when in a videogame the characters are doing insane, outlandish things.

If David Chase and his writing crew had to write an episode of The Soprano's where Tony highjacks a train and kills 50 people, it would be an accomplishment in of itself if they could make a cohesive story behind why Tony is doing that.

I dunno, I believe the more videogame technology moves forward the more subtle and nuanced the writing will get.

The dialog people criticize is almost entirely in cutscenes and conversations, never in the "kill 50 baddies" sequences. And can a real, professional writer write dialog for those scenes, even if the player goes and blows up a train in the next scene? Yes. I think that the first half of Uncharted 2 has pretty good writing and great character interaction, yet the protagonist runs around killing hundreds of dudes.

It's been a long time, been a long time, been a long lonely lonely lonely lonely lonely time.

Yes, it was very annoying. I hate the magical circle of police activity. It's a lazy solution. I escape the circle, lose my wanted status, turn the corner and see another police car. But for some reason he isn't at all suspicious because he was not in the magical circle. He can't even see that my car is completely mangled from the previous police chase.

Mafia 2 could be easy or hard depending on the circumstances. Evading police was based on line of sight, and that game had a decent stealth system. I rather enjoyed sneaking past police to the nearest safehouse or clothing store.

The trailer is from PS3? That makes me happy.

It's still hilarious that one person says "It's too good, looks like next gen" and then the next points out all the flaws and says "They should have waited until next gen". I'm going to be playing SA on the PS2 today...I'd gladly swap that performance for this. I'll be flying a plane later when suddenly a forest pops up in front of me or I'll be driving a car into the back of another car that really wasn't there. If you are the type of person who, when driving a jeep out of a plane and parachuting down to the ground, thinks "Look at those jaggies!" then it's time you took up gardening, because flowers won't have jaggies, but are a hell of lot less fun. "Yeah, that's unrealistic to use something real against a computer graphic", yeah well it's unrealistic to expect high end PC graphics on a current gen machine with less than 512MB RAM. It will be the same at the end of next gen, when R* will have to push the hardware to get the graphics up to a level befitting that generation...and people will still say "They should have waited until next gen".

"Next gen graphics today." It applies to every generation, like a sign in a pub that says "Free drinks tomorrow".

Hear hear, I'd buy you a beer.

That tumblr account had me in tears yesterday. I usually never look at comments on trailers on YT or any other site, but I should.

It's still really on rails though, it's a very strict narrative. You can never really get away from the narrative in UC games.

I'm all for upping the ante' ... but I also think going too serious can detract from games. I always hated in RPG's where you'd have a love scene cut scene about some relationship that was building up. Even in Mass Effect the relationships were done fairly well but they seemed oddly placed.

Plus, even voice acted scenes done well are broken with low rez animation and non fluid animation. It's why I laughed during the few hours I spend with Heavy Rain.

In fact, one of the better examples of great voice acting along with great animation would have to be Sleeping Dogs (PC). But even then, really good cutscenes seem out of place. Spoiler kind of
The main character kind of goes all Donnie Brasco on his carrier and it was done great, but I just got done with a mission that was pretty relaxed and had some joking so I went from "this is nice, have fun everybody!" to "YOU DON'T KNOW THE SHIT I'VE BEEN THROUGH BRO!" in like 15 seconds, just seemed off.

But honestly, with a game as huge as GTA V I don't see how they balance it, but it works for the most part.

Go to GTAForums.com if you want a good laugh. You'll get depressed quickly though. Just went on, clicked thread: "u a toooo stupid kid! f*ck pc junks! ps3 has also a good raphic engine an pc is only lagin. screw up mofu..."

Haha, oh wow.

Or indeed, maybe I should not. It would only make my misanthropy grow even faster.

About the writing though. Are we talking dialogue or the complete package? ' Cause I think some people have it mixed up.

I never had the chance to play free roam with friends on GTA4. By the time I had picked it up every one of them had moved on. Definitely not missing it this time around.

Game Informer GTAV Podcast

Mostly just discussion about stuff we already know, but they talk a bit about the routine of the other characters when you're outside of a mission and that they'll not just be driving around aimlessly but you might, say, jump to Trevor and he'll be in the middle of a drug deal that might go awry.

It'll be interesting to see if Rockstar has set up these side missions so that at a set time Trevor will be locked to an event and the next time you switch he'll be right at a point Rockstar wants him to be, or if it'll be 100% real time and Trevor will go through with the deal even if you don't switch to him.

My hope for these initial console releases is that they find a way to have traffic and pedestrian density reflective of a city like L.A. It's tough to tell with these trailers.

That was my favorite mod on the PC for GTA IV, as without it really lacked that urban center feeling.

Holy shit. I haven't been on the Gtaforums site in a while. It was crazy back then. But I'm now glad that GAF exists. Yeesh.

What you saw in the trailer are merely portions of the demo which some (websites/magazines/GI/IGN...) have seen. This demo is from PS3, so the trailer is from PS3 too .

It´s not necessary to analize the AA to reach this conclusion.

We don't know for sure that the trailer is PS3 footage though. We don't even know if it's in-game, to be honest. The trailer doesn't note that which R* always went out of their way to say about LA Noire (I don't care if it was Team Bobdi, they still did) and Max Payne 3. And I think that might be worth questioning.

But let's call plausible guesses, plausible guesses, shall we? We know it's a GTA V trailer. That's it. Everything past that's a guess.

Is it?

I've never been the one to care about shoddy ports, but I figured I'm going to pick this up on 360 this time around. Based off the past.. Not only will the game play better (Obviously I'm assuming from previous R* games excluding LA Noire) but my friends play on 360 as well.

Isn't PS3 lead platform this time though? I think that's been batted around in this thread a few times.

That second screenshot is fantastic. Nobody should be concerned about the size of the city.

No, people just assumed because it was demoed on the PS3. According to Multiplayer.it who had an interview with Dan Houser they'll be posting next week and were answering Twitter questions earlier, there is no lead platform and they're developing for both consoles at the same time.

It's not perfect and I also hope for a much better system in V, but I appreciated that IV's was such a huge improvement over previous GTA wanted systems... now those are what I call "clunky and unfair". Some of my favorite moments in GTA IV were long drawn out 4-5 star chases where I was frantically trying get enough distance between myself and the cops and making enough turns into the best areas to break their line of sight and then hide while they went right past me and switched from "there he is, get him" mode to "where is he? find him" mode. At which point I would carefully make my way to the edge of the wanted zone, focusing on the mini-map like it was a little Pac-Man screen. Never gets old for me. Mafia 2's system does sound more convenient.

re: "penalizing the player," that's been one of the most basic tenets of GTA from the beginning. The first game that eventually evolved into GTA1 was originally going to put the player in the role of a cop going after criminals. Then they realized it was more fun the other way around. The whole thing centers on the idea of committing crimes, trying to get away with it, and paying the price if you don't. Besides, don't they have cheat codes to shut down wanted levels for the people who think that's more fun?

I would have taken a much smaller world to play in if it meant visuals that were at least on par with what they accomplished with Max Payne 3.

LOL, wut? Just don't play this type of game. Not every game needs to be Uncharted. doland.jpg.

I would much rather have an open GTA game. I'm not against your opinion, I'm against trying to make GTA what it isn't, and that's a game with a small scale.

As with all our games’ trailers, it was made entirely from in-game footage and nothing was pre-rendered

He's doing an interview today? Are the screens above from IGN or GTANet?

IGN, and yes it was scheduled on IGN for today.

----

From GTAForums:
Multiplayer.it answered to some questions about GTA V via twitter today while they were showing in live streaming NFS MW (I announced it today).

Hopefully I won't forget anything, here all the info they gave:

First of all, next week they will release an interview with Dan Houser, they teased that he will reply to lot of questions, such as "Why there never been female protagonists?" and "Why all GTAs are set in America and there aren't GTAs in other countries?"

- There is no a lead platform, they are developing the game at the same time in both PS3 and XBOX360
- Who saw the demo thinks that there won't be a Wii U version because rockstar is not experienced with this new console, but he is also confident that there will be a PC version after a few months.
- Who saw the demo said the graphics is amazing, and you can see the maniacal attention to all the details. Amazing graphics and attention to details combine together and give a credibility to the game world.
- Speaking of graphics, the demo had a lot of alias (Which is going to be fixed before release, of course) but the frame rate wasn't bad (but not perfect). Curiosity: They did the same presentation for GTA IV 5 years ago, and in this case the graphics was great but the frame rate was really bad.
- At the moment you can't switch between characters if you are in free roam and you are wanted, but they are still working on that so it may change (Maybe we'll be able to switch characters and then make a huge escape from police with all the characters together... Damn, this should be in the wish list lol)
- There will be multiple endings (Maybe we already know that, I can't remember)

Was re-watching trailer #1 again, and this scene got me to thinking... who are these characters? Not any of the 3 protagonists... nor as far as we know any of their relations... The guy in the middle seems important.

EDIT - actually, could the girl on the left by Michaels daughter? she has blond hair and looks kinda similar to the girl from Trailer #2 right at the start where his daughter and wife are arguing.

I doubt they'll change that because the other two characters could be on opposite sides of the map, making escapes really easy if you could swap characters (Even if the wanted levels carried over, you could switch to Trevor, who could be on the outskirts of town where there are no cops).
