Blops 2 is decent, I still don't know how long they can keep putting out basically the same game though. For all Treyarch added, it's still CoD. I'll take Treyarch's games over IW though.

That's why it's successful. They don't fuck with what's working. Just MINOR tweaks.

Yeah, I get that, but eventually it's going to get stale. I'm very interested in what IW is making now. If it's MW4 I'm not sure how well it will go over. It will sell obviously, but MW3 basically ended that mini series. I've bought every one since 4, and with Blops 2 I still have fun, but I'm starting to feel that tinge of "same old."

Sells a ton still though.'

Finally got the green visor...

Ugh. Worst Halo experience yet.

These don't add up.

Yea this is why I'm betting McDonalds goes out of business anyday now. They cant just keep flipping those same burgers and making those systematic fries all day long.

So you don't think the game will ever get boring if they just keep doing "modern" warfare with the exact same stuff? CoD4 was huge because they totally revamped the series more or less, I think they'll need another CoD4 in the next few years to keep it going full steam ahead.

If you ate McDonalds every day for a year and then went to a new McDonalds that added hot sauce, it wouldn't keep you from getting sick of McDonalds quickly.

Too many boring old rules like touchdowns and first downs in the NFL, no wonder that league is struggling. They need to change it up a bit.

Woah there. I don't think 343i can handle the terror of online petitions by the Waypoint Forums LE specialists for having their LE devalued even more.

I thought it was just a headstart, and that a game wide unlock would happen on the 20th. Why this emailing shit? Why doesn't MS/343 have it in place to just give the specializations to everyone who plays Halo 4 while signed in on XBL?

Beyond monetary reasons. There is very little money to be made on the LE at this point, and guaranteed access to specializations is no longer an incentive. This backlash is proving more harmful than just globally enabling specializations for everyone.

They do change stuff. The create a class is probably the most advanced create a class in an FPS to date. They've added a rank system, spectator mode, CoD Tv, they copied theater a few games ago I believe.

Theres a new set of guns again with some classic repeats. Always new maps.

Its the same dependable product with a new skin over it.

Thats all people (CoD fans) want. They already LIKE the game, they don't need it changed.

They keep making the graphics better at a rate that technology lets them. I'm sure they want their game to look a lot better but it looks OK and it plays damn good. While I can't say the same for Halo they push the technological limit too hard and it makes the gameplay suffer.

I will still swear everytime a RC car kills me though, screw that thing.

Yeah. CoD is interesting for sure, you wonder if it will slow up any and if so what will be done. I agree about the choose 10 thing though, cool idea. I wonder if IW keeps it. I did like that Treyarch was the team to use vehicles occasionally, but due to MW's success it looks like that's done in CoD for good.

Who knows. I just don't think CoD will keep putting up these numbers forever. Maybe I'll be wrong though.

CoD fans like the gameplay, why change it up?

This is also a question for YOU, 343.

Because the longer it remains the same, the larger the dropoff of people wanting to play becomes. I saw it happen with Halo in only 4 main games. I know many people that would not have given 4 a shot had it been another Bungie game, but the new developer, sprint, upgraded mechanics brought them back. Just a personal example, not the same for everyone. It'll happen with COD, the question is how long will it take.

^No. Haven redux. I'm just finishing my map right now. Forge is really tedious to use this go round.

Remove SAW for sure.
I took it as a personal insult, I hope you're happy.

Good, I say take out personal ordnance though, don't think it really adds anything. Weapon placements seemed fine, but that saw is still deadly.

And good luck trying to get Xand to post here.

Those where good games! As for personal feedback: I think you should have BR's or DMR's not both, it skews the balance of gunfights having both. Its pretty hard to tell which one someone is holding so its unfair to have DMR's in there as power weapons. Maybe replace the DMR's with Snipers? There are 4 shot kill BR custom settings out there, maybe try those if you stick with the BR? The 5 shot kill BR is not much fun to use. DMR's for everyone would be better if your sticking with 5sk.

Global ordnance is pretty bad, I would say stick to on map power ups, but thats impossible. :(

I hate Saw's so I would say remove them. :p

Thanks for the feedback guys. I think I'm going to try another version where the damage is upped to 110% or 125% to give the BR a 4SK. I also think I'm going to reduce the ammo in the SAWs and also remove personal ordnance. It added too much randomness when we got a full game going(2v2 it wasn't a big factor). Also I think I might remove the Sticky Detonators from global ordnance.

As for your remaining two two issues(global and BRs with DMRs), I have a bit of reasoning for both. Maybe I'll end up changing my opinion on them later, but I want to keep trying these ideas. Global ordnance is only the initial drops and they resupply every 3 minutes for weapons and 90 seconds for grenades. I did this so that new players and old players can see them once they've dropped, but older players can time the drops. The BR and DMR issue will be a bigger factor on larger maps where the DMR has an added scope. I've felt like the DMR should be more of an offensive counter-sniper weapon and the BR should be a bit more defensive, causing the sniper to descope(or flinch in this game). Since there aren't snipers on Haven, I'll consider having a version with the DMR removed because of the distinguishing issue.

We're letting a fast food industry (a static, consistent subject; you can't really innovate eating food at this point) to video game industry (highly volatile, high turnover, lightening sales window, constant innovation, dependent on technological progress) analogy fly now?

At least use some shit like Mario, juices. Keep it intellectually honest.

Played a bit of Halo 4 this weekend, first time in two weeks. It'll be at least that long until I go back. I'm this close to handing out my map pass code and seeing what I can get for the game in store credit.

Flinch. The goddamn flinch mechanic. I will never, ever understand.

Not sure if serious, but I'll take the code if you give up. I think Gamestop was guaranteeing $30 trade lately. Do you hate it that much?

Now I'm scared.
Puuh, crisis averted.

Next time for sure, I guess you tried Karl's map? I saw it in the Forge OT and it looked interesting.

Ya, it was good, slightly laggy.

Then we played some quasimodo version of the pit that was built apparently for hobbits.

Thanks Bobs!

Any idea on what they're giving for the LE?

I want to sell it, but only if I can break somewhat even.

No? If people like it, they like it. You're looking at it with a twinge of derision, for a lot of people who play COD, that's the only game they play. Each release is an event and they get to try out all the new shit and have fun.

Here is where Bungie and 343 dropped a roman soldier helmet onto the face of logic: in business, when sales are steady and consumer satisfaction is high, you more or less stay the course while reinvesting part of your profits into R&D for future iterations. With Halo, even though sales were extremely strong and retained steady populations over many years with a certain type of product, they have tried to chase (poorly) after a bigger market and ended up falling flat on their face. Halo 4 not only shits on the foundation of its predecessors (who needs classic CTF or assault options in custom games?), but almost all of the features they've added are clumsy, half-baked and a desperate swipe at a market that has no interest in it.

Between COD and Halo 4, I'd say the latter is a whole lot more stagnant than the former.

That's about as disingenuous as you can possibly get. Can you imagine how much effort McDonalds puts into developing new products, new ad campaigns, renovations, building plans for franchises, food production, co-marketing, and more? And they have to cater to not just different regions in the US but to the norms and tastes of different countries? I mean, the restaurant industry is about as volatile and filled with turnover as a business can possibly be while still being tenable, requires constant innovation, has extremely high competition, lightning quick sales windows and lives and dies by streamlined technological efficiency. One is a mass produced product aimed at the lowest common denominator - the brainchild of a relatively tiny group of people who control how millions experience the product. The other... is the same thing.

Think Bungie called it the Arena. Think 343 probably used some of that $100 mil and realized people would always find ways to ruin in. Decided they cared much more about their average consumers and fans not getting kicked offline rather than what 69SWAG420 thinks about his 50.
Arena was heavily flawed and do you really want to go into how Bungie poorly handled Reach? 343 also went out of their way to announce right before launch that there would be a ranking system coming next year so there's your theory about not wanting average consumers/fans to get kicked offline. People will cheat if they want to cheat, see: Oddball on Complex.
I'd probably love your vision for H4, I just don't buy the opinions of many that play competitively that these changes are going to bring everyone back. Those players are looking for something else.
Ranks added longevity to a game that armors, gameplay element unlocks & XP Progression systems simply do not hold a candle to. Long after you've unlocked whatever virtual object of your desire the ranks would still be there. It goes to show how flawed the incentive device for H4, the XP, has a daily cap. How backwards it is to create something for players to work towards while simultaneously telling them they've had enough.
I suppose "all involved parties" does not include anyone outside of America lol.
You'd think they could have just had a system in place that would have detected anyone who's played a game before the 20th. Yet they could not have because the latter half of their progression system was an LE incentive...

Thanks for the serious post. You make some great points. I like watching CoD as a case study, it's such an interesting thing to watch. To see if changing just a few things here or there each year is enough to keep it going. To your point, Madden does the same thing and sells. Hell, I'm more upset with Madden then I'll ever be at CoD, but that's besides the point.

It'll be interesting to see where we're at in 5/10 years, that's for sure. The generational shift will make all these yearly games (CoD, Madden, etc) seem "new" again, but does it last?

I don't argue ranks add longevity. My take is this: The vocal members here and elsewhere are often like ranks = population. To a degree, this may be true. But it is as if people are arguing that you released H2 w/ H4 graphical capabilities you'd have H2 pop numbers again. My take is your average player is going to see Halo ranks and his bronze or his 35 or whatever- and he's going to run to COD as fast as he can because the option is there now.

I really would not be surprised that in the event 343 does in game ranks that the population is stagnant and it just becomes a huge mess of exploits.

If this crusade actually does come up w/ some system that keeps the masses without turning MM isn't crap, I'll gladly eat crow. I'd love it. I'm just trying to be realistic. I decided late in Reach that I had more fun playing Doubles (post-Arena), getting decent games, then dealing w/ the BS sideshow in Arena. Nothing to do with whether Arena players were "nerds" or try-hards, or whatever- ranked has always been like that.

So when 343 comes and says your CSR is coming later- I see it as a pretty decent compromise.

Yes because remember, to a large group of people, every year is their first year. That's what Nintendo rides on. The old timers will eat up whatever carrots of nostalgia the developer dangles in front of their face, the casual audience buys it because they know what to expect, and the fresh faces think this game is the coolest thing ever because they've never played it before.

This is why people react so strongly to some of the changes in Halo 4. Take the lobby UI for example. This is something that (prior to Halo 4) was not only streamlined over the past decade, its layout was practically the bible for modern multiplayer game lobbies. 343 commits the ultimate consumer sin here: the change benefits no market. The old timers think it's an idiotic replacement, it's unnecessarily complex for the casual player to use, and the newbie doesn't care either way, he just knows what the COD one looks like and wonders why this isn't the same. Change for the sake of artistic expression is fine, but you better be damn sure it's great when you're overwriting legacy features.

Grilled chicken sandwich with no mayo, angus snackwrap and green/unsweet/raspberry tea combined myself, but I only go to McDonald's like once a month if that.

There's gotta be a way we can directly correlate all of these to our Halo playstyles.

So many people wanted a canonical explanation for a multiplayer experience too, right?
