Slickdeals thread about this had a meltdown about this:

This thread is embarassing and it just proves that places like 4chan and NeoGAF have really hurt the gaming community at large. Everyone is an agenda motivated fanboy full of hate for inanimate objects.

NeoGaf is hated??

Very much disagree. That game is better than probably every party game I ever played on Wii, and many of its games are more fun than entire single player efforts that are priced at $60.

Did you actually play it?

I played it and reviewed it. Nintendoland at $60 is nothing short of robbery. Most of the games don't offer enough depth, and the real reason you'd want it—the multiplayer stuff—is terrible unless you've got a full five players.

Nintendoland should be $20 at most, free with every console at best.

That's not true at all, a lot of the games have a surprising amount of depth.

And the multiplayer's awesome even with 2 people, maybe you just dislike fun? :p

It's obvious that Nintendo rushed the console to the market. They should of delayed it imo. Their advertising for the Wii U isn't that great either and not on par with the Wii's marketing by any stretch of the imagination. They seem to be targeting two demographics this time that could be confusing consumers. The industry has changed drastically since the Wii debuted and many gamers have altered their preferences for gaming. The Wii crowd and the COD/dudebro/Halo crowd and most of those gamers purchased a PS3 or X360 for their COD needs I think. Third party games sales are literally nonexistent right now to prove this and that is depressing considering they actually have some good games at this launch. Both consoles are relatively close in price and the X360 and PS3 library is obviously much more "healthier" with comparable or at this point, slightly better graphics than the Wii U. I know it's a still a new system, but gamers only care about what they see on their televisions despite power and performance claims. Both systems have $60 games, but again obviously, PS3 and X360 have more and cheaper games at this point also.

I think what really distinguishes the Wii U from the other consoles is the tablet gamepad, but problem is, does it really genuinely add to the gameplay experience like the Wiimotes did? Not sure if that is enough for most causal gamers. Also, why are they only demoing Rayman in the Wii kiosks???? It doesn't make much logical sense to me since the game isn't even out yet. I expect them to bounce back from this, but they need to increase awareness of the console and really show what it can do to separate it form the competition, especially before the PS4 and X720 materialize.

slickdeals hates NeoGAF? lol
Slickdeals is weird in general. I wouldn't say there is any one "community hivemind" similar that can be looked at as akin to a gaming message board. There are just too many people who span different spectrums of life there.

It's a case of agreeing to disagree, and I certainly won't imply that anybody who does have fun with the game is wrong.

However, I played Nintendo Land alone, with two players, with various groupings of 3~4 players, and with a full five players. We all felt that games like Animal Crossing and Mario Chase just weren't fun unless you had four, or ideally five players. And even then, after a few times trying some of the games, we were just done. I liked the Balloon Trip game, but really, it only had some much life to it. Same with the Donkey Kong game.

I thought the best chance for fun out of the collection were the competitive games, but there weren't enough of them, and every one of them was based around "chase" in some way—so after a while, they started to feel like the same thing. I think Nintendo Land should have been far more focused on that type of multiplayer stuff, had better game variety, and had more concept that worked no matter how many players you had.

Nintendo's going to be in for a hell of a shock in 2013. No major releases even known right now, so that means no heavy hitting big games until September 2013 at the earliest most likely.

Working at one of the big electronic retailers, and no one gives a flat fuck about Wii U. There are plenty of Deluxe and Basic systems available and have been since Week 1. No one EVER buys games for it, they just sit there like no one even notices.

I love when someone says "should be $250 with Mario U packed in" or something along those lines.

Were people this unrealistic during the previous console launches?

Pikmin 3, and I think they could have a potentially big 3rd party hit with LEGO City Undercover given the popularity of the LEGO games.

Pikmin 3, Lego City, Game and Wario, Rayman Legends, and others. Plenty of promising titles that, if anything, may at least have marketability.

2013 will be fine.

I'm sure Lego will be at least comparable in terms of quality but without a huge license like LoTR, and Star Wars, and Harry Potter is it really likely to sell as well? Those are all franchises loved by adults and kids alike.

It has some interesting games coming up, just that they still have no firm release dates or already seen delays. The Lego game may come out in march or may. Pikmin maybe in June.

I don't think the 360 was really a must buy until gears of war, so it's not the worst thing in the world. You at least knew that third parties were jumping on board that console though. I'd like to see Nintendo at least throw more money around for unique exclusives and support, both sony and MS had to do the same.

No games announced means no games exist.

The problem with these titles, aside from LEGO City, is they appeal to such a narrow demographic. And like others have said, without the strong license tied to LEGO City I just don't see that title generating a lot of excitement. Pikmin, Wario and Rayman are sure to fly under the radar with most kids and probably won't invite a lot of console purchases. As an enthusiastic day one Wii U owner I'm starting to see the writing on the wall. All the games I want in the coming year are on competing systems.

Sure, but it feels like Nintendo wants things quiet so they can announce a blowout at e3 or whatever. The console is out, and I don't think a single new title has been announced that we didn't already know about. There's certainly not a flood of third parties saying they're eager to support the console with anything either.

I'm sure they'll have good stuff out next holiday, they'll have to.

Yeah, most people won't realize that Lego City Undercover is a cool Lego GTA.

The name sounds like shovelware. Barbie's City Adventure. Spongebob's Town Party. Ben10's Metropolis Unleashed. All it's got going for it is the Lego license which is alright, but is it good enough?

If it sells it'll be to

Animal crossing, mario chase and to a certain extent luigi are not that great. They are fun for their own right but metroid, zelda and especially pikmin are the best games imho

Try selling the same people Tetris or Pacman remakes on XBLA. I mean, excellent and replayable so worth $60, right?

That's my point though. Quality has nothing to do with where the price should be. Tetris should obviously not be anywhere near $60 in today's industry and it's not.

Were other console launches met with such a lack of demand that retailers had to offer sales on them within six weeks?

Nintendoland is a great game, but not 60 dollars great. Good thing I got a like-new used copy for $45. Still, that's too damn high. $30 tops.

The recent wave of Amazon product reviews are pretty interesting to read. Apparently angry parents are frustrated with the setup process and constant updating for each title. We'll see how it pans out. If the games are interesting enough, people will put up with a lot of pain.

I disagree. The three competitive games are fantastic and so far those are the ones that have had the most appeal with my friends. The cooperative games are great in their own way and are much deeper, but "grow on you" where the competitive games are instantly accessible and fun. I just wish they had more content because the co-op games are jam packed.

I've played Nintendo Land more than some other games that I've paid $60 dollars for this year.

So should it be worth $60 dollars also? For me yes, for Nintendo yes, for others maybe not. It's hard to put a particular value proposition on any item, especially if your not intoned to that items intrinsic value or somehow justified a particular price point as I have showed in my first statement.

Even Cheapassgamer is anti neogaf lol. They said neogaf is bitter about vita being a failure, what does that got to do with wiiu ?

Oh man, I just went out to Best Buy today. NOBODY is buying a Basic bundle. They had at least 20 Basic units stacked and no Deluxe bundles. I was kind of surprised there wasn't at least one Deluxe bundle out but I didn't see any. No wonder they are offering this deal for the Basic Set.

Because gaf ultimately devolves into a cesspool of facetiousness and elitism at its finest for any popular gaming forum. Any actual, substantive discussion gets flooded and becomes floundered by a constant barrage of e-peen waggling and 'holier than thou' insults, which are sometimes well-written and implicit in some of the dialogue (hats off to those posters). I mean, when you've got posters who are allowed to post drivel like, 'wii-u should be $150' without any type of reprimanding, you know you're in for a lot of fun. Even worse, the mods allow for explicit flame-bait to be posted and then ban those that actually point out the ludicrousness of some of these posts. It's best to just ignore the circle jerk because nothing is going to stop it.

EDIT: You can also synopsize many posts in this thread as, "anecdote, anecdote, hyperbole, insult, maybe some facts, and finish with hyperbole."

True but you could say the same thing about any forums to be honest. We certainly aren't the worse place either. What rub people the wrong way is the fact that not everyone can register for the forum here and when you register it can takes years for your account to get activated.

I guess some people are simply mad they couldn't get in. I mean yeah there are a lot of dumb threads and posts but just spend a week on Gamefaqs and you will see it's still much worse there.

What has been posted on slick deals at the top of this page is true everywhere too. Some people are personally insulted when you disparage an electronic product they like. At this moment some people are probably typing loudly on their keyboard since the thread title implies the WiiU is a bomba and they feel we are slandering the holy spirit of Miyamoto.

As for the pricing discussion, I think you have to keep in mind that not everyone is smart or have a good understanding of costs associated with the R&D and the production of electronics. The smart thing is to give a nice reply explaining why the person is wrong instead or replying with sarcasm or dumb gifs.

The funny thing in all of this is that we are supposedly an awful forum and yet all of these places that hate us read us and talk about us all the time. Just like the people that says eeeew 4 chan all the time and know everything that is going on in there.

Had to go back to Kmart this evening to pick a few things up, still the same number of Deluxe and Basic units sitting behind the glass as the other day. It just makes me wonder how much Nintendo really thought this thing through? Did they think they could catch lightning in a bottle twice with their tablet controller?

1) Basic is seen as worthless to most people interested in the system

2) Pro controller only works with certain titles

3) Mandatory update before you can use the system and long setup time

4) System is roughly as powerful as consoles that came out in 2005 and 2006

5) Lack of awareness that a new system even launched.

I'm enjoying my Wii U and NSMBU and I plan on buying ZombiU shortly, but this console could have a very short life with all the blunders that have been made. Not to mention the interest level just doesn't seem to be there. Going with hardware that wasn't beyond what the current gen offers was a HUGE mistake. I wish they would either add more power to this thing or just scrap the Basic SKU completely. Being last in the hardware power race won't work this time unless there are blockbuster titles that take advantage of the tablet controller in a way that makes that game/games a system seller.

What discussion? Thanks for the attitude, bud.

Says the person calling us sheep for discussing the video game industry on a video game message board.

lots of places hate neogaf. it's not an uncommon sentiment in my experience.

Some of the hated is well earned, some of it is just due to the strong moderation.

Back on topic though:

Has anyone found Wii U demo kiosk that allows you to play anything other than Rayman?

Not surprised this is happening. I'd guess price drop to $249 for the deluxe edition before the end of Spring. There is just no interest for this thing. I wouldn't be surprised to see only 200,000-300,000 units sold in December in the USA.
