Michel Ancel and Rayman dev team show up at fan(?) protest RE: Rayman Legends delay

Gahiggidy

My aunt & uncle run a Mom & Pop store, "The Gamecube Hut", and sold 80k WiiU within minutes of opening.

Lol, I'm not trying to say that there isn't a hefty number of adults who play GTA. It's just that GTA 4 sold what, 20 million? Origins didn't even hit one million. The reason that GTA sells that much is because it has casual appeal. Kids are part of that audience. The majority of sales Rayman (Origins/Legends) gets are from enthusiasts. Enthusiasts are generally adults. Therefore I don't think I'm going on a limb saying that: ratio of adults playing Rayman > ratio of adults playing GTA. I'm open to hear what you think.

Most likely accurate, i'd have thought. Especially as most parents don't give a crap about age ratings.

Looking at third-party Wii U software sales to date, I have to agree that Ubisoft's reasoning for the delay makes sense.

I'm not convinced that it's correct, mind you. Just that it makes sense.

I don't think it would have hurt overall sales if they just announced it for other platforms later on. And we wouldn't have this mess. Nobody would complain and non Wii U owners would be happy.

ratios? wtf is going on.

my original response was to a comment saying that "Rayman sells to adults", implying that GTA is aimed for kids, which is false.

even if Rayman Origin sold 1 million to adults (which it didn't) and 90% of the people who bought GTA IV were kids (which they weren't), that would still be 2 million adults buying GTA (for the sake of hypothetical guesses).

who even talked about ratios? who moved the goalpost there? what's next, people who buy Rayman are more likely to be blonde, come from a single parent house?

I don't think audience crossover is what games releasing in September need to worry about. It's that every article about video games that month will mention GTA and next-gen systems and probably nothing else. Every electronics store window will have standees of the GTA protagonists and every Best Buy pre-order kiosk will show two SKUs of GTA and not much else. Every time someone at Gamestop answers the phone, they will say "Thanks for calling Gamestop, where you can preorder Grand Theft Auto V and receive free bonus weapons, how can I help you?" The most watched Quicklook will be about GTA. People will be staying up all night for the GTA embargo to end. There will be hyped up livestreams from every major gaming site for GTA.

Every other game in September?

well in september wiiu is going to have games like wiifitu, wii party u, wind waker remake, pikmin 3 and possible wonderful 101 while ps360 are going to have GTA, Call of Duty, God of War, Gears etc.

I think its better to release in a silent season.

Also 2D platformers never did overly well on platforms outside of Wii last gen. And the Wii Rayman Subseries (Rabbits) did very well.

You're making up demographics, many adults today were introduced to GTA when they were children. A large amount of Pokemon fans are now adults, why would there be a huge drop off for past GTA fans that are now adults?

Whose more likely to be a larger demographic, fans that grew up with an incredibly lauded series since childhood and now are adults or new fans that are children?

Either way what the hell is the point? That Rayman is more mature? The original poster that implied that much is delusional.

Do we know this was a fan protest?

I only ask because I have to ponder why anyone would do a public display for this game that the rayman team would just "show up" for. Wouldn't individuals simply protest online? Wouldn't the development team have to be integral in holding a public display? Shouldn't the title of the thread read (if it is a fan protest) "Michel Ancel and Rayman Dev Team Join Protest To Free Rayman"?

I don't think it really matters. Ancel and the other devs have clearly shown where they stand on this issue by posing for this picture. Everything else is pretty much secondary.

While I completely agree, the re-framing of the event is integral to how it's perceived on NeoGAF. There are those who have said that it's simply an attempt to show that the dev team is sorry things don't turn out the way we want them to, when there is no evidence pointing to that.

I'm confused by the title change of this thread is all.

Where is the evidence that there's a full blown protest?

I'm amazed at the people who are saying "Who cares, it's Rayman". They must not've played Origins.

There certainly isn't evidence. All we know is that Michel Ancel and the Rayman Development team posed behind an image that states:

"Release Rayman. Support Ubisoft Montpellier." Rayman's crying face is seen in the middle of the poster. A speech bubble emanates from his mouth. It simply says "SVP" - "please". The background of the poster includes crowds holding banners that read "Wii U", "Rayman", "Michel Ancel" and "28/02/13", the game's intended release date before the delay.

I'm confused why there is the new narrative that it's a fan protest that the developers decided to sanction.

But I didn't imply that, nor did I imply that only teenagers under 18 buy Grand Theft Auto games. I also didn't say that Rayman was exclusively selling to adults but that is how you chose to read it.

A lot of people have understood the concept that a larger proportion of the E10+ age range will be more interested in GTA V than Rayman Legends.

Thus the sales that GTA V will be taking from Rayman Legends are predominantly those of, on this thread's evidence, so-called adults.

Yeah, following this thread, the story went from "Devs protesting" (and with the first picture shown of three people, it was implied all three were devs) to iirc someone in the thread saying "How do we know they were devs, they could have just been fans protesting" to "They were just fans protesting." Hearsay, on my internet?!

Exactly. It's interesting that a mod stepped in to fit the title with his individual narrative that he thought was normative. It completely reframed the event from "devs protest" to "devs show up." Both are unsupported.

See, I just don't understand this situation.

If the game is done, why not just release it for the Wii U first and then once the PS3 and Xbox versions are done, release them in the fall.

This makes

Everyone happy
more money for Ubi
????
profit

Fucking done.

I understood what you meant perfectly, no need to explain videogame rating systems. You're still making things up, and I still don't see the point of mentioning how kids will be the majority of sales for GTA V. I don't get the idea that the bigger demographic is children, but whatever.

Plenty of adults didn't buy Rayman Origins either, no new GTA in sight. How would the majority of adults that buy GTA V but don't care for Rayman interfere with Rayman sales?

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.

If you think Ubi devs would write Ancel's name in a banner and the name of their boss/employer as a ball and chain onto a protest banner, then perhaps your powers of perception aren't exactly functioning correctly. Fan visits dev studio, gets devs to pose with sign. Ancel is even doing a "hmmm, look at that interesting sign" pondering look rather than some wholehearted support gesture.

Interesting reaction, but I'm not interested in what you're selling.

I'm not supporting either narrative, but simply questioning why we are acting like we know what happened when we have zero conformation. I don't know why you want to tell me my powers of perception are not functioning, lol

Game gets far less exposure on news sites since they'll inevitably be focused on GTAV?

Legends won't be the only victim of this, but when it was coming out this month in the middle of a huge software drought for the Wii U it probably would've invited much more press attention. Even just releasing the Wii U version now and the PS3 version in September (while hoping Microsoft doesn't turn down the 360 port, but that version of Origins didn't even sell the most in the first place) would be preferable.

He's just wondering why they left the 't' out of Montpellier.

Much respect to Ancel for doing this, major shame that the Wii U version got delayed... there is really no reason why they can't release the Wii U version now and release an "enhanced" port for the others with an extra level or something later.

I can't argue that GTA V won't steal thunder from everyone, I was just debating the idea that the majority of sales for GTA will be from children and the majority of sales for Rayman will be from adults.

Ubisoft should've seen what would happen with the Wii-U and it's small install base, Legends should've been multiplatform from the start and released far away from GTA V.

The problem with boycotts is that you hurt the 3rd party situation on the WiiU and you hurt the developer as well.

Those who wanted this game for the WiiU should continue to support it.

The information has not changed. We do not know much other than that Michel ancel posed behind an image.

Going off the leaked promo video from a year ago I'm of the mindset Legends was always going to be multiplatform, just that the Wii U version would be the lead-version and get release priority due to both its gameplay features and having a demographic that tends to react more favorably to 2D platformers.

I'm not really of one mind one way or the other about the age group of buyers for both GTA and Rayman either though, I agree it seems like a bit of a generalization. Part of my fandom in the series stems from nostalgia over the original Rayman and Rayman 2 and my overall love of platformers; that hasn't really changed from when I was little, to when I was a self-conscious teenager to now.
