Michel Ancel and Rayman dev team show up at fan(?) protest RE: Rayman Legends delay

Gummb

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about Rayman Legends Wii U.
... That took me a few moments to notice, so I'll just assume it did for Ancel as well.
I like it.

Either that or he's seriously considering the message from the dev team. Or, he's skeptical of the message outright. Or he has bad gas. We can invent meaning to meet our goals, I don't think we can clearly discern what his look means.

I understand them getting upset because they presumably worked overtime to get the game finished in time - but then again, they get paid anyway, right? No matter when the game releases?

If the deadline was set at sep right from the start, they will have several months to make the game, which means lesser crunch period and overtimes, while getting paid the same amount.

Many companies also give a bonus for games that sell well... hard to make a bonus on a finished game if it's not released to be sold.

Jesus Christ... These people are EMPLOYED by the publisher!

Easy there koopa-troopa! I wasn't specifically referring to Ubisoft Montpellier. I said; I hope this matter stirs up "developers in the industry." Obviously, it can only apply to the applicable situation. Not every dev studio out there is an own subsidiary operating under one large publisher. But, forgive me for not being absolutely clear.

Interesting to see this. I feel for Ancel and the rest of the developers.

I was kind of curious to see what baconsam was going to say about this and get his take.... but I guess he's busy in a thread created about the 720/PS4 talking about... how Nintendo is doomed or something. alas.

I just want to say Ancel is an awesome dude !

If was for him, Rayman Legends engine would be open source already =/

The problem with boycotts is that you hurt the 3rd party situation on the WiiU and you hurt the developer as well.

Those who wanted this game for the WiiU should continue to support it.
It depends how you look at it, in principle I'd agree with you...but as consumers when we bend to their will we condone their actions and our efforts/gestures mean nothing. It's a statement, and one that I'm willing to uphold even if I was the only gamer who believed so. How else are they to learn they can't take their fan base for granted? Just my opinion :)

If you think Ubi devs would write Ancel's name in a banner and the name of their boss/employer as a ball and chain onto a protest banner, then perhaps your powers of perception aren't exactly functioning correctly. Fan visits dev studio, gets devs to pose with sign. Ancel is even doing a "hmmm, look at that interesting sign" pondering look rather than some wholehearted support gesture.

I'm reasonably happy to accept that the sign may well have been created by a bunch of fans who turned up rather than the devs; it's plausible, it fits.

Do I take it from your comments that you do not believe that Ancel agrees with the premise of the sign?

If that's the case... why be willing to *appear* with it so readily? If the sign is toxic, as some here are suggesting, so toxic that the devs wouldn't support the premise of the sign, then surely it's be a really really bad idea to happily pose for photos with it?

Those devs have balls. I hope their jobs aren't compromised because of this.

It's a ballsy move, but it's also not as ballsy as it may seem considering that they're one of the most talented dev teams in the industry. If Ubisoft wants to fire them over this then they'd be snatched up by someone else almost immediately.

Or Iwata could just throw a check down on the table and instantly create one of the most awesome Nintendo studios ever.

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to write to us with your feedback. I can certainly understand your thoughts and want you to know how much we appreciate you sending them in. Please rest assured that your comments will be forwarded to the other departments here at Nintendo. There are current and upcoming licensee games for Wii U. For more information, please visit the Games section of our website (www.nintendo.com/games).

I'm sorry to hear of your frustration regarding the delay of Rayman Legends. While I can't speak for Ubisoft, the game's publisher, I'm sure that their goal is to meet a game's projected release date. However, as we know from our own experience those plans may be altered for a variety of reasons to ensure that the quality of the game meets our exacting specifications.

As for Aliens: Colonial Marines, I haven't head of this game being delayed. For more information on these games, I would suggest contacting the publishers directly. As the publishers of these games would be best-suited to answer your questions. To get their contact information, go to the following web address and click on the appropriate name:

http://www.nintendo.com/corp/licensees_third.jsp

Again, thank you for taking the time to write to us with your feedback. Your comments help us to understand what is important to our gamers.

Sincerely,

Jessica Smith
Nintendo of America Inc.

Yeah they are basically toeing the line there with their response, I still thought it was interesting they even replied at all. I am not sure if her reply to give me the list of licensees was to say "hey these are all companies who can make games for us!" or not.

I still wonder how many of the people actually pitching a shit fit about this delay would have actually bought the game new and within the first month of release.

A good chunk I'd guess, although there's certainly a general hubris about third parties treating Nintendo like shit thrown in there.

Sales would still easily eclipse the number of people complaining by a factor of 10, minimum.

Pretty much the same response I received ;)

Considering we know they had to spend $350+ on a Wii U within the last few months I'd have to guess a lot of them are atleast willing to spend money on new games.

I would not have even thought of picking this game up had it not come in February. I enjoyed the demo. My birthday is next month. Once I finish the games I have, I'd be picking this up.

Now? It will probably get lost on my radar and passed up for other games.

They have some leverage in the fact they are Ubisofts premiere team as far as talent goes. Yves and bros could come in and clean house but in the end it would hurt Ubisoft a lot more than it would hurt Ancel etc.

It's not like his tone would change. Alberto totally mopped the floor with him in a different Rayman thread and that didn't help anything.

At this point I've begrudgingly accept the delay, but I'm fascinated to see if/how Nintendo and Ubisoft respond to this continued uprising. I'm guessing that if Ubisoft was going to comment on the Ancel photo they would have already, but I'd love to see the games media get a comment from Nintendo on how the feel about their users using their Miiverse platform to badmouth an important third-party partner. I'm pretty impressed with how loosely moderated it's been so far.

Nintendo should woo Ancel by funding BG&E2

i don't think it's that simple. bge2 probably would have come out last gen had they figured out where they wanted to go with it. and ancel prefers a small team. throwing money at the project won't make it come out any faster.

O_O what?

microsoft and sony have a right to refusal on ports. microsoft can refuse a port that is late and sony can refuse a port that is late without new content. that's why razor's edge on ps3 and 360 is getting more stuff over the wii u version. it's also easier on ubisoft (and the dev team) to just delay the wii u game than to make an updated version for those consoles as well.

That doesn't mean that the Rayman devs couldn't maybe make an extra level or two and release the game on time.

new thread title makes no sense.
pictures are taken in front of ubisoft montpellier building.

talk to the mods about it. They changed the title to what you see now, minus the "(?)". Then they added the "(?)" after it was clear we have no idea what the fuck is really going on.

Oh shit there goes the baconsammy theory that everyone at ubi is happy with the decision

Wait, people actually listen to Baconsammy? I'm walking away from this thread surprised.

More on point, why do I get the feeling that this gen is going to be full of this terrible shit from all sides? We're just STARTING and already devs are getting fucked around by publishers to the point where they refuse to stand in silence.

There were actual protests over this?

Oh ffs people its a fucking video game.

The protesting is coming from the developers who busted their balls to get this ready on time, now they've been kicked in their busted balls by ubisoft with the massive delay which meant that all that extra work amounts to nothing. It's not just a video game we're talking about here, it's people's hard work and sacrifices as well.

Yeah, welcome to being employed. It means eating shit from time to time. There are a lot of people who work longer hours than these guys and get paid a lot less to put up with things worse than a product not going out when it's finished.

Are some of these not fans, op and title implies that they are.

Employees are allowed to voice their opinion, I don't know why you're against that. Your argument makes it seem like employers can and should do whatever they want to employees. I can't follow that reasoning, I'm sorry.

Also, there are some theories as to who these people really are. We know that Michel Ancel, the head of the Rayman dev team, is there. We also assume the rest are a part of the development team. Some believe that the developers staged this and posted pictures to show their support for releasing this game as originally planned. Other believe that fans went to Ubisoft Montpillar and asked for photos with the development team.

We're not really sure...

Very strange situation indeed.

I don't own a Wii U and didn't play Origins save for the demo, so I shouldn't be concerned. But even as a simple outsider, it's easy to see why the whole delay thing is fucking wrong. Talked about it with some people working in the industry and didn't knew (they live in Japan like me, and don't/can't take the time to keep up with everything as they're fucking busy) and they were floored and disgusted by the whole situation.
I really can't believe Nintendo didn't lock that game HARD. They promoted it about everywhere, basically like it was the only worthwhile things coming out for Wii U in the next months.

On that protest thing, I seriously doubt the Montpellier team did anything beside coming down to greet the fans, I'm really surprised by all of you guys who immediately jumped the gun and started to talk like they were on a strike or anything. C'mon, they just (silently?) voiced their opinion FFS.

So no one has a right to complain unless there is no one worse off?

I'm not suggesting that the developers are actually protesting, but the "What're you complaining about? Other people put up with worse" line is garbage.

Man, I just listened to the Rayman Origins soundtrack, especially Gourmand Land and Sea of Serendipity. God damn. Please let me play this game, Ubisoft.

This is what I listen to when I can't sleep. I imagine swimming around in the level that it's played. 9/10 I'm asleep by the time the video ends. Ahhhh.

So good. I can't wait until the Rayman Legends OST is released.

I enjoyed Rayman Origins on Wii but I never got very far into it. From what I played of the new Legends demo it's solid but I can't say it excites me or pushes me into a purchase.

So you are the guy that took my name!

While this isn't a serious insurrection or anything, I know a lot of people think this is all a ploy for publicity or to get on Nintendo fans' good side. Truth is that all this PR and hooplah about the delay will be completely forgotten by September though.

September is a long ways off. At worst, on Wii U, you're looking at some sort of first-party title in the August/September timeframe. If not a huge hitter like Mario Kart, you may end up with a 2D platformer like Yarn Yoshi. And a Nintendo-branded platformer could be just as bad for Rayman. And on PS3/360? All attention is going to be GTA 24/7. Not to mention the upcoming Durango/Orbis focus.

Rayman might've bombed if released now on Wii U. Regardless, none of this will be remembered in September, and I can't see the game's prospects being very good that month.
