Doug Lombardi did not leave Valve. Stop hyperventilating and go read a book.

uhhhhhhh. WTF is going on with Valve. They haven't released a monumental game since Half-Life 2... my fear is they are now totally focused on Steam, and don't give two shits about the Half-Life community.

Portal/Portal 2? Left 4 Dead/2? DOTA 2 isn't up my alley but that'll be huge too. TF2?

Are people actually freaking out over Lombardi? If his job has no influence over game development, and his departure just signals a shift in relationships between himself and others at Valve, shouldn't we just leave it at that?

What's with the over reaction??

You seem awefully well informed.
The reason people are reacting this way is because a bunch of people have left the company abruptly and they've been stonewalling the press about it. Of course gamers are going to try to fill in the blanks.

benevolent sexism
Gabe has been talking a lot lately about leveraging systems and economies (as opposed to individuals) to produce desirable outcomes. It's possible that Valve no longer needs a human being to do most of their marketing.

gave away the keys to the kingdom.

By "monumental" I assume he means a concerted, many-year project... which Portal 2 fits nicely, actually.

bitch I'm taking calls.
It's true that his departure is more like the White House press secretary leaving, which no one would care about, but it's following a bunch of other departures.
I'd disagree with the first part of that. I think it's less about his actual job title and more about him as a personality and driving force at Valve. Lombardi has always been synonymous with Valve in a lot of their efforts right next to Gabe. I believe him leaving is significant enough to say something big is going on behind the scenes.

Can't help but feel company morale is insanely low. They don't have the same drive for developing games anymore. Just about everything they work on is in development hell / limbo. Maybe they have set a standard that is too high for themselves internally. Valve/Steam needs less worship as a digital platform and more tough love criticism as a games developer.
People can't line up quick enough to suck off Dota 2, and Portal 2 wasn't even two years ago at this point. Valve's games are fine.

I don't want to be alarmist and I don't want to overreact but when you have so much invested in a companies service, it's hard not to get a little worried when you hear about major shake ups like we've heard about recently at Valve without an obvious cause to point to.

It's true, but on the other hand there's no evidence Valve isn't still raking in money hand over fist.

What's troubling is that it looks a bit like Valve may be bailing on in-house game development. But there's no chance that Valve itself or Steam is having any existential concerns.

Considering many in this thread didn't know who he was, but certainly know of valve and gabe, I would say you're selling him a little strong.

Damn Valve is falling apart. Doug is pretty much a founding stone of that company and huge part of Steams success.

Could you imagine if Valve buyout was announced at MS' conference? The Internet would collapse.
I would love to see the meltdowns lol

Uh, he's still listed on their employee page (and they were pretty quick to purge that a few weeks ago). Why doesn't someone email him?

Looks like it's not true. What a weird way to put your work history. I don't know anyone who puts the date they started up to the current month. Everyone just says "Present".

We need to create a list of who or what positions are no longer at Valve.

Doug Lombardi - Marketing
Tom Leonard - Source 2 developer
Jeri Ellsworth - Hardware Engineer
25 employees in Hardware and Android development
A bunch of people in character design

What change can we piece together from these layoffs?

Don't ever use Linked-in as confirmation. It's a horrible website that people frequently use incorrectly. Many times, instead of "Date - Present" being displayed, if the user enters the data in the wrong field, it will show "Date - <current month/year>," which looks like an end date but actually isn't. For example, if Doug doesn't touch his Linkedin account, on March 1st that entry will say: "January 2000 - March 2013."

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
Alright, what the hell, Valve? Gabe, you got some 'splainin' to do.

Edit:

Oh, yay!

Yeeaaaah suuuuure.

Typed by Gabe Newell as Lombardi bleeds out under the desk.
