Cliffy B says things about microtransactions

BF3 was beta when it hit retail. Pretty staggering rendering bugs. Just thought I'd back this guy up with one example.

Thanks.

But I could say the same thing about a number of other publishers, it's not just EA either. Look at ACIII, they shipped a buggy mess and then sold a season pass, then they tried and failed to fix the game's problems for a couple of months and moved on the DLC.

CliffyB drives a frigging Lambo. He is about as in touch with the gamer as Hillary Clinton.
But Hillary understands me man.

I'm sad that such a prominent game designer doesn't even acknowledge the fact that sticking microtransactions in $60 games will have an effect on their fundemental design. It's always going to be to the game's detriment too, unless it's purely cosmetic DLC (see Valve).
That's exactly my sentiment.

CliffyB is obviously right as far as the business side of things is concerned but since he's a game designer, I'd love to hear his thoughts about how game design is influenced by F2P models, microtransactions etc. Things don't look so bright on that side in my opinion. I don't want game mechanics and systems tailored around a monetization scheme but that's what's happening more and more now. And there's a reason for why all his examples are arcade games: there've been two decades of full price games on home consoles and PC where monetization models didn't play a role in game design.

"People like to act like we should go back to “the good ol’ days” before microtransactions but they forget that arcades were the original change munchers.
Back before we had genres and Atari literally had the mandate that you couldn't make a game that is the same as another game that is already out?

Yes please!

The fact that he is rich and or drives a lambo has nothing to do with whether or not he is or is not a gamer. I really don't know enough about him to comment on his "gamer cred" or whatever but assuming that successful people 100% lose touch with what they loved doing before they became that way is pretty unfair.

Thanks.

There are definitely other examples (like AC3), that was just the first that came to mind because it pissed me off to no end. Brevity will do for now... I think we all know which games are at fault and listing them will probably only derail the thread.

The traditional industry already had a recent crash starting in November 2008 from which is never fully recovered, and from which it never will.

Because costs have gone up dramatically for developers, publishers and even consumers.

The SD/$50 era was a much healthier environment than todays HD/$60+DLC market. Games look better but EVERYONE is paying for it.

Are we heading for a crash? Maybe. I don't think it will be consumers losing interest, it will be publishers going bankrupt.

Cliffy, I love you, but we all know that not only does EA not ship great games, they also ship unfinished games and then nickel and dime the costumer to pay for the rest.

EAs latest offering costs $80 in my country...this is from Origin. No shipping or logistics involved. $80 for a thoroughly average game plus X amount for DLC and microtransactions?

Or how about companies that sell a season pass for DLC, but then release DLC that's not included in said pass. Gotta love that!

What, those art history and philosophy degrees everyone has aren't helping them land jobs? :)

It's pretty funny how you go off about devs not being able to feed their families and are insanely unappreciative to the audience that allows you to be unemployed while owning a fucking Lambo.

Keep it up.

you know that's in the new Gears, right?

You get double XP and the other half the game.
What, seriously?

No. That's not the way to come back after his initial post. Take it like a man, dude. You're done in this thread.

edit: jealousy and bitterness levels on the rise in this thread, damn!

Hey guys how about we just turn this thread into a gears of war 1 love thread?

Remember how awesome it was when your other three teammates are dead and your trying to take out the whole team, and as you kill each one you know that the rest of your team is talking massive shit to everyone that's dead on the other team. And then you get down to one guy and you just have adrenaline pumping through you knowing that the rest of your team is watching you, and you finnally find the guy and down him and then take your sweet time to curb stomp him.

Fuck those were the days.

He's right, vote with your wallet. I truly hope as more people get fed up with publishers testing the limits of distasteful business practices they start doing that more this coming generation. Not that there won't be a dozen other excuses as to why Game X or Piece of Content Y sold poorly, but it's pretty much all we can do as consumers.

Those companies that put these products out? They’re for profit businesses. They exist to produce, market, and ship great games ultimately for one purpose. First, for money,

No shit. I actually thought you had something interesting to say, but is the same usual: developers gotta eat, living is so expensive in SF, used games are stealing from us that are suffering so much we can only afford to buy Lambos, etc etc.

Oh yes, vote with your dollars! (hopefully it's lots of them, whales *wink wink*) You almost wonder how Activision makes billions of dollars in profit each year when everything is so stacked against them, poor them.

Comparing EA to Valve and TF2? I think if EA released constant free updates for years, allowing community contributions (that even get compensated), and had every item obtainable in some way outside of outright paying for it you wouldn't see the same reaction.

And you don't foster any goodwill by building every game from shooter to RPG around the idea of squeezing microtransactions out of people, making them shittier in the process.
