I really love the music in that video, hope it's indicative of the game's soundtrack.

eh, i hope not. i little too far down the inception rabbit hole... the wavering digital noise et al.

the setting gives no reason to have those musical traits.

LCD's have come a long way. And if you are into 3D movies and gaming, Plasmas just are not bright enough for daytime viewing.

If you're into 3D movies and gaming, LCD technology should be the last thing you consider in a TV. Unless curtains happen to be a rare commodity in your neck of the woods.

Mark this analogy right now:

Bethesda : Elder Scrolls/Fallout :: Square Eidos : Deus Ex/Thief

If it's that I'll take it. They can fuck it up so many ways that I'd rather have at least that and not an Assassin's Creed+Every other AAA game shoved-in wannabe.

Bit disappointed current gen never got a Thief game. Was expecting Thief 4 to be it when it was first announced.

Really wonder what their approach to the gameplay will be like? Most stealth games from current gen have tried to change them to be more fact-paced with less plodding about and sitting in the dark. Even Dishonored had it's supernatural powers like 'Blink' etc.

The art direction doesn't impress, which is weird considering Deus Ex looked cool right away.

Anyway, all these screenshots with the main character's hands/body interacting directly with the geometry makes me wonder if they could do proper platforming in a stealth game. Dishonored's system consisted of painting a surface with the cursor and blinking to a spot. Controlling one of the Assassin's Creed characters is like putting a car into drive and steering him in a general direction. If they could do proper platforming, that would set them apart right away.

I'm still seeing a lot of hand wringing in a corner and reloading if the player goes for it at the wrong time. Same with endlessly trailing guards along their patrol paths. I know it's the bread and butter, but those mechanics... I don't know. I need the main character to be dynamic. Maybe real(I sort of have to specify that considering what passes for platforming in Uncharted and AC these days) platforming is a way to do that.

I'm just hoping this lives up to the series' name. Thief. God damn you, you're so good.
Man, what a Dishonored knock-off. Do devs have no shame anymore? Why have we regressed from a crossbow to a bow? Golden Cat looks better than that.

lol

Time to correct my mistake and play the Thief games before this :D

Should I avoid Thief 3 or play it just for the famous Cradle level?

PLAY. Some people are too hard on it. Different approach, but still a Thief game. And the Cradle, dear god.

Good that this is in Eidos hands i think they could make a great new Thief game after Deus Ex: HR. And in the interview they said they will stay true to the original games.

Dishonored was as much a stealth game as Deus Ex: HR... translation not really at all (I liked dx:hr a lot though). While I enjoy the stealth option, I'm a bit sick of it being treated as an option. If I can go guns blazing, why not just do that instead? Probably easier.

I'm throwing all my chips at this Thief remake. If it is a pure stealth game, all these Dishonored comparisons can eat crap. Thief will be the better game by a mile if this is the case. So sick of the hybrid game trend.

For people complaining it doesn't look next-gen... so what? Minecraft looks like piss (albeit intentionally) and nobody cared. If they are using the extra horsepower to improve the IQ, add AA, up-res, etc. then it's a win. Where's that gameplay > graphics argument now?

Edit: It clearly started as a current gen title as well. There's your explanation.

I feel the timing is kind of relevant here though.

Splinter Cell and Black Ops 2 were announced before the Wii U was formally re-unveiled, and Splinter Cell is still being cagey, which makes me think they were debating whether or not to port it.

Need For Speed was a notably late port.

Watch_Dogs is the main one that sticks out to me, though that game was pretty cagey with platforms in general until recently.

However, what incentive is there for them to not announced Thief for the Wii U if it was coming, given that it's now March 2013 and the system is released?

We definitely have Wii U games being announced in tandem these days with things like Assassin's Creed IV.
maybe game informers just did a typo? Or maybe its steambox?

Guess this will be one of the first next-gen-only multiplats, then. I still expect a lot of cross-gen multiplats even by Q4 2014.

And of course it's not coming to Wii U, lol.

Honestly I'm guessing it's just a generic term that most marketing teams haven't dropped since the PS4 reveal wasn't that long ago.

Game Informer cover stories are often done a few weeks in advance. They could have told them "PC and other next-gen platforms." and then later added PS4 when that was announced, but the old term is still there.

Hopefully it'll be 1080p@60FPS on the PS4.

Ofcourse presuming it was indeed a current gen game before switching to next gen.

Just don't hold your breath. =/

Will watch with more detail later after work but I would have liked some WiiU confirmation just for a wiimote implementation. I'm not crazy about the reboot but it could have been so much worse. Them dropping the Thi4f nonsense is already a good thing.

I like my living room dark most days, but not all guests (not to mention other consumers) feel the same.

Also, according to CNET, 9 out of 10 of the best 3DTV's of 2012 were LCD. And the one plasma on the list ranked at number 5.

LED LCDs of today can provide excellent picture quality, and deep blacks. As deep as plasma? No, but getting there.

Eh, not sure I agree. If you own the IP and plan to revisit the premise of Thief, what difference does it make?
I dunno, does making a game called Tomb Raider without raiding tombs at its focus, with a character who claims to hate tombs make it such a game, or does it make it an entirely different game? But then, I'm not entirely sure that this is the appropriate thread for such a discussion anyway. My apologies.

Press release Square Enix just put out.

UNVEILED FOR PC AND NEXT GENERATION CONSOLES BY EIDOS-MONTRÉAL

Critically-Acclaimed Studio Returns with a New Vision

LONDON (5th March 2013) – Eidos-Montréal®, a part of Square Enix Europe and the award winning studio behind the critically acclaimed Deus Ex: Human Revolution®, today unveiled THIEF™ for PC, PlayStation®4, and other next generation consoles. THIEF is a reinvention of a franchise that helped define an entire genre of games.

Time has moved on. Power has shifted. New greed replaces the old.

But to remain free in The City of chains – that is still the greatest prize.

First I stole to survive… then I survived to steal.

I am one man; I hear your secrets, see your hidden truths.

I am the shadows, the dark and deadly, the velvet night. You will not see me coming.

I am Garrett….What’s yours is mine.

There is a rising tide of fear in The City. Hatred saturates every stone and whilst the rich prosper, the less fortunate face misery and repression. Ravaged with sickness and famine, they wait for something to change.

Into this shadowy world steps Garrett, THE master thief in a first-person adventure featuring intelligent design that allows players to take full control, with freedom to choose their path through the game’s levels and how they approach and overcome each challenge.

"We’re handling a precious gemstone with THIEF. Fans remember the original games very fondly and we want to preserve that essence - which we have excellent experience of doing at Eidos-Montréal - whilst also introducing THIEF to a brand new, next-generation, audience,” said Stephane D’Astous, General Manager, Eidos-Montréal. “Our goal is to deliver the fantasy of being Garrett, THE master thief, and we’re building this game around that core experience.”

Exclusive coverage and developer interviews can be found in Game Informer’s April issue. Additionally, visit GameInformer.com/thief throughout the month for on-going coverage.

THIEF will be available in 2014 for PC and PlayStation®4. It is also planned for other next-generation consoles.

This is usually when Q1 2014 games are announced though.

that doesn't mean it's not too early. When you can't even say which platforms it is going to appear on, maybe you should wait until they are announced. I would have done it after e3 after all the hoopla over other announced next gen games has died down. Then again, I'm not in marketing so I'm talking out my ass.

Well, well. An actual surprise. Though, we knew it was coming. I'm not totally on board yet. The first person shots look ok, while some of the others look kind of blah. Really need to see it in motion.

Still I'm hopeful given it's the same team who did Human Revolution. From the GI video most of the folks seem to have an understanding of what made Thief what it was.

Wow!

Look at that Dishonored art. Seriously what is with this singularity of art design that the industry falls into. Hopefully we see more to tell us otherwise. I've been anticipating these games for a while now.

You would expect people to read through the press release (which says next gen console"s") before releasing it but this is the game industry we are talking about so yeah.

Right, but I mean, look at the title:

"UNVEILED FOR PC AND NEXT GENERATION CONSOLES BY EIDOS-MONTRÉAL"

There's no PS4 there, yet it appears later.

totally looks like Besthesda saw what they were up to and cranked out Dishonered before so they could get they jump.

Incredible similarities here.

I love this so much. So very much. Might as well name it Xbox Waldo.

'Other next-generation consoles' is strangely worded, it should be 'another next-generation console', or platform, but why use the plural when it's not coming to Wii U?

The screenshots looked rough as hell, certainly didn't look 'next-gen' to me.
