Xperia Z/ZL |OT| Experience the best of Sony in a smartphone

Sony is on the right track but they really need to release their phones in the US if they want to continue their recovery. Ignoring the US because it's too hard only hurts them. Samsung has figured out how to dominate the US market while placating the carriers and manufacturing devices which work with the schizophrenic and mutually incompatible US networks, and Sony must do the same if they want to be a real competitor.

Great phone. I love how its practically stock android with a few exceptions, certainly nothing like touchwiz or sense. And the build quality is really top notch.

I went pretty early on a work day and my plan workers,no line! Proud owner of an Xperia Z :)

My Htc HD2 can finally rest, after more than 3 years :')

They just keep getting bigger, are there any high end <4" Android phones out there?

Sub 4" I'd say iPhone 4s. Slightly bigger than 4", I'd say Xperia V (4.3"). But are mid end compared to Xperia Z/HTC One, but high end in their respect. For instance, the Xperia V is the Xperia T's little, waterproof brother. They were 2012's flagships, competing with GS3 and HTC One X. In terms of performance : GS3>Xperia V>>HTC One X.

My Lumia just suffered from me rolling like a wild dog on the beach...seriously considering getting a dust/sand proof phone. Any idea if the Z delivers on this or it's just marketing bullshit?

If the S4 doesn't wow me, then I might get this.

How much bigger than the S3 is this? All they did was shorten the bezel for screen size right?

Cause I it isn't that much bigger than the S3, same with the S4. The S3 is like the perfect size for me.

The million dollar question that everyone wants to know, will this phone get updates to the android Os when klp (5.0) releases

Yes. 4.2.2 begins rolling out soon, depending on when the GS4 releases, Xperia Z/ZL will likely be the first OEM devices to get 4.2.2, quite a turnaround from Xperia S.

I'm tempted to grab this - is it available in Australia already?

I am wondering if it is worthy replacement to my S3 though, which I recently realised just HOW happy I was with it.

Maybe I'll wait for the S4 announcement and then work my way from there

I would say skip the Xperia Z ánd the Galaxy S4. The Galaxy S3 will remain a very solid phone for years to come. You can easiliy get 2 more years out of it.

I'll be honest, the idea of having a phone that is resilient, looks good (and admitedly better than the S3) and the water protection really has me interested.

Yeah most of my reasons are superficial, but >_> I don't know how I will rationalize that. :p

Already planning on replacing my Xperia arc with this. I was initially thinking of getting the Xperia V but when I heard about this when it was first announced, I got a boner. Same as the V, it's the water and dust resistance that really sold me.

I get that. You can sell your S3 for a good price and invest in an XZ.

That didn't really answer the question, I would expect it to get 4.2.2 (frankly, any new device releasing now should have at LEAST 4.2.1, but what about 5.0?

Edit: Just noticed the messaging app icon, my god that is terrible.

Which one is an XZ though? One of these?

Also, just wondering, besides the water protection - what is the difference between Z and ZL

XZ = Xperia Z
As for the differences, the designs are different and the ZL can function as a IR remote. The ZL is smaller, but slightly thicker and the front camera is on the bottom right. the ZL also has a great notification bar imo:

He did answer you. Yes it will get 5.0 down the line. 4.2.2 will come first though of course.

What's the root/rom situation like on Sony phones? Is it a piece of cake like Samsung or are they a pain in the ass like HTC?

The camera's....not that good. It tends to smear the shit out of everything pictured

Wow... That camera's...not as great as I thought it could be.

My w580i took great pics when I was using it (RIP, sorry for dropping you into a glass of milk) but I'm surprised that the XZ's camera quality tbh.

I work for a cell phone company in Canada and just had our in store training session for the ZL. Not sure if I'm more or less hyped for it. To be honest the feeling of the back was actually a con; I like the smooth feel of normal plastic/metal hardware. The screen was impressive. Very bright and lacking in saturation. The UI felt almost too skimped down in my opinion.

But in even more amazing news. Rumour has Sony may be making a nexus phone soon. End of year/ to Q2 next year. You heard it here first.

This phone is great, really love it! The screen is amazing and I'm really not troubled by the viewing angles. The screen can display pretty deep blacks too, but the software button bar and the notification bar are grey'ish. Probably a design desision. The phone is blazing fast. I probably notice it more than you guys would because I'm coming from a single core 2009 gingerbread build. I think I'll buy a BT headset for this phone. That would rake care of opening the flaps every time. For file transfer, I'll do it over WiFi. I hope that Sonys future water proof devices will have wireless charging, file transfer and headset. No opening flaps.

That said, I'm very satisfied.

The black ZL is the only one with the textured back I think. You guys didn't get the white ones?

Xperia RX. Well I don't know what the name is going to be, but Sony's legendary imaging prowess is going to be integrated into Xperia.

They could have just written better imaging algorithms. It's embarrassing to get beaten by their own last gen imaging chip just because they can't write good software.

Textured > Smooth.

So much better to hold.
I agreeeeeee. It's weird that Sony doesn't have better camera processing software. I assume they still haven't integrated the company to a point where those 2 divisions are actually working together. I mean, at least it's not Motorola bad but Sony should be better at that.

Indeed. Just as we got Mobile Bravia, we are going to get Mobile BIONZ, I think it is a software port of their BIONZ processing engine for NEX and Alpha cameras rather than an actual processing chip.

It's happening, now that SMC has moved to Japan it's a lot faster and they are working together much better than before. The integration still isn't fully complete, there is a lot to work out still, for example the intracompany pricing for SMC for image sensors is said to be higher than what Apple pay for them. That will all change, but as with anything Sony, it takes time.

Their second half of the year flag ship?

Too many flag ships...

Not a flagship, more a specialist device as I understand it. Not a stupid Galaxy camera style hybrid, but a premium device aimed at photographers who don't want to compromise. Basically what the RX series is all about for photography. Interestingly the device could be released under their Cybershot brand to get around Nokia's long term deal with Zeiss.

Good news if they can sort the camera thing out because then if they make a Nexus phone...it will truly be the peak. With that said:

watchu talkin bout

I had always assumed Sony would be the first company to release an Android phone that lets you boot into stock android if you wanted to after you buy it considering how much work they put into it.

Not allowed for Nexus. Hence why Sony will never make a Nexus unless Google relax the branding/customisation rules. It's also why Samsung bailed out.

Sounds interesting. This year?

No idea, could be but possibly 2014. The camera division is undergoing a massive change at the moment, transforming from a cheap compact focus to a premium compact and ILC focus. Projects like the one I mentioned could fall down the pecking order as a result.

booooooooooooooooooooo

Blame Google. It's their stupid pricing and customisation rules that causes worse and worse companies to release Nexus devices.

That new camera the RX1 looks like it takes AMAZING shots for a compact camera. And then I saw the price. Off topic I know but but "premium compact" makes sense to me, but it would be great to get that kind of shit in something that isn't nearly that expensive. Someone has to figure out how!

it's kind of ironic
