Xperia Z/ZL |OT| Experience the best of Sony in a smartphone

That new camera the RX1 looks like it takes AMAZING shots for a compact camera. And then I saw the price. Off topic I know but but "premium compact" makes sense to me, but it would be great to get that kind of shit in something that isn't nearly that expensive. Someone has to figure out how!

it's kind of ironic

The RX1 is a very special camera but it is for (rich) professionals only, much like Leica. Consumer grade versions will come soon, I'm sure, but they will still be over $1k. The RX100 is plenty awesome though for $649, best pictures out of compact camera ever.

That's what this new phone concept is based on, best in class quality with no compromises. It will be expensive though.

These pictures look stunning on XZ's screen with MBE2 on.

Oooh, I hope that means a pop-up Xenon flash like the RX100 where you can tilt it. I suppose it may be too much to hope they could stuff the RX100 sensor into a phone… oh well.

Not sure if the Xperia RX should be a specialist Cybershot smartphone, which to me sounds like it would be a thick bar of a phone. To me they should really try to micro-engineer (is that even a real term?) the RX100 into the successor of the Z releasing next spring, put the JDI 1080p panel with WhiteMagic, keep the IP57 feature, bring it all together in a body the size of the ZL and keep the slogan "the best of Sony in a smartphone". I would keep that as my phone...forever.

I believe the question is whether it is physically possible to fit the required lens into something that thin, and I don't think it is unfortunately. That is of course why the Pureview808 is so thick. Of course I would love to be pleasantly surprised if they could somehow pull it off

Over on the esato forums there's been talk about the RX phones. They say the 2H flagship will use a 1/2" sensor and be 20 megapixels. Does this tie in with what you've heard zomg?

Well if they are serious about putting larger and better sensors in their phones, I would assume they'll put better lenses as well. It would be interesting if they could one day produce a G lens for their phones :)

Extremely boring looking phone, but those features are pretty impressive.

Compared to the Lumias of this world, it does look boring. But when you hold the thing in your hand and look at it, you'll appreciate its elegance. Really a beautiful phone.

By the way guys, if you want to avoid openings the flaps too much:

The first image has a slight bokeh dof going on in the background (branches top left). I wonder how a picture like that would look in a well let area at night, like Times Square.

Was excited until I saw the GS3 size comparison... Are there no ~4 inch mid/high end phones in the pipeline anymore? I've got an upgrade I'm itching to use but nothing fits the bill so far.

Not that Verizon would carry this anyway. Now where's that RAZR M successor?

There are new phones coming, but they haven't been announced yet. I'm unsure if any are in the 4" range though, more than likely 4.3-4.6 from what I've heard so far. If I'm not mistaken, Sony has finally moved on to the new method of having a very minimal window between announcement and launch of a new phone, which is why we didn't hear anything at MWC about these phones. Anyways, from what I gather the newer low/mid phones should be announced very soon.

If I'm not mistaken, the Xperia V is the only 4.3" Android phone that sports a snapdragon S4. It has a 720p screen, S4 dual core SoC, 1GB RAM, has a replacable battery and is waterproof.

I saw a number of regular people in Kyoto today with the new Z. Still outnumbered by iPhones. I wonder what the sales figures are like for Japan.

Also wasn't there some +6" version that was leaked a few months back? I remember seeing it but I'm on my phone so I can't find it now.

It will not look good, I shouldn't have expected Lumia 920 quality. :/

Sold 160k in 2 weeks in Japan.

This was the rumor about the 6" right:
Xperia 4 - 720p ~360PPI, 12MP, MSM8960T, 1.5GB, microSD, 16GB, 1800mAh
Xperia 5 - 1080p 440PPI, 13MP, APQ8064, LTE, 2GB, microSD, 32GB, 2400mAh
Xperia 5R - 1080p 440PPI, 13MP, APQ8064, LTE, 2GB, microSD, 32GB, 2800mAh, water resistant IP57
Xperia 6 - 1080p ~370PPI, 13MP, APQ8064, LTE, 3GB, microSD, 32GB, 3500mAh

An Xperia phablet makes sense, Galaxy Notes are a success and Sony hasn't served the phablet-7" tablet segment yet.

I never realized that having a completely dust and waterproof phone would be fucking amazing. I pretty much baby my smartphone and dread the day I ever have it come close to a wet or dusty environment.

I really hope more brands pick up this feature.

Several reviews complain about how annoying it is to have to open a flap to charge the phone.

Was really tempted to get this, but decided not to due to its arguably last gen processor.

Buy the charging dock, problem solved.

S4 Pro last gen? Its like 5-6 months old, will you really notice any difference with Snapdragon 600 in everyday use? XZ is very smooth, I haven't experienced any lag.

The latest rumours have the phablet at 6.44", the screen is 2560 x 1600, an 8MP camera and it's apparently only 6mm thick. The rest of the stuff in your post like 3500mAH battery are still rumored to be true

If the galaxy S4 doesn't completely blow my mind, I'll be picking this thing up. How much does it cost to import? Will it work on T-Mobile?

T-mobile is the rumored carrier in the US for the Z. Unless you need a phone asap, I would wait a bit.

i remember. feel so conflicted. i'd like a new phoine before i go away, and the z/zl is sexy, but a superior model with features of both + bigger battery is p attractive.

obviously i appreciate better technology is always co,ming out.

The Snapdragon 600 is basically a S4 Pro (Z/ZL) with slightly higher clockspeed and better ipc in the cpu.

Until now everytime I got an Android phone one of the first thing has been root it, this time I am still thinking about it. What about you? Did you unlock the BL and rooted the phone?
If yes, which Rom are you using?

I imagine putting cyanogenmod on this phone would improve the battery by quite a bit wouldn't it? I mean the battery isn't GREAT or anything but it should definitely be capable than more than it seems to be getting.

/random thought

edit: by the way, what's going on with the whole project to put stock android on sony phones. Is that still a dream or is there actual headway or is it forgotten.

If the Z was a Nexus I'd be so on this. Really want a good smartphone camera. =/

The tough part to swallow is when Apple and Samsung come out with the same sensor and shoot better pictures. But those Z shots aren't bad at all, they're actually pretty good. Just not as good as they could be.

The processing sucks. It's getting beaten by an iPhone 5, which has the last gen Exmor R sensor. It's embarrasing considering Sony has an imaging division.
