Well yeah. Japan never had blackface. Why would they know what it was? Ignorant and offensive? Definitely. Racist or hateful intent? I doubt it.

uuuh, maybe its just me but those look like they are supposed to be parodying New Guinean or Australian Aboriginal people, not African Americans.

There's been quite a few Japanese comedians who have donned blackface on TV shows in the past. And you're right, in Japan this leans more towards ignorance than racism. But if this was done in America, everyone would say it was racist. Japan's fairly homogeneous population affords them little contact with other cultures and people and thus, shit like this happens.

What about the uk? I've seen the show Little Britain and they wear makeup to look black or like Japanese schoolgirls.

As someone that never gets offended over racial issues as a black person, even for me that would have been over the line. Then people expecting me to join in? Oh boy. Yeah, stiff drink from the bar, no tip, knocked over wedding cake then out of there.

Yes, because otherwise it would just be Japanese guys wearing cones on their dicks.
Race isn't a costume though. Wearing indigenous wear for traditional purposes is okay, but painting your skin a color to assume the race of the peoples wearing the garb?

Someone can clearly see that the Japanese guy is wearing something traditional without having to paint his skin black.

I've never seen that show (I'm American) I guess it all depends on the context or situation. Some people wouldn't be offended, but there will be some who will. Mickey Rooney portrayed a Japanese character in the Breakfast at Tiffany's film and a lot of Asian Anericans complained. This kind of thing can happen anywhere, I guess.

True story: I was in a clothing store out in Chiba (a Shimamura store, kinda like a Marshalls or Ross) and saw sweaters that said "BLACK GANG" on them. I had a good laugh.

And a lot didn't care or found it funny. I think it's the crudeness of these non-professional dress ups that get people riled. It looks awful and likely their impersonation has offensive stereotypes all over.

I dunno, there is usually some kind of alteration to make the race clear. These are two white British actors portraying Japanese:

In Japan, friends of the groom (or maybe bride, too) will perform skits or sing/dance/do other fun, silly stuff at the wedding reception for entertainment. Apparently what OP saw was one such skit. Why these guys went full blackface, I have no damn clue. The sad thing is that no Japanese person in the room probably didn't even perceive this as racist.

Sad but true. Bet your ass one of those guys at a wedding where some guys painted them selves yellow doing slanty eyes and throwing rice around would have them paying attention.
