Forza Motorsport 5 at gamescom - Spa confirmed

It's probably the shadow LOD changing.

I think the same thing happens in F4.

I read somewhere that all track shadows are baked so, how baked shadows have LODs? LOD make sense in real time shadow map applying less resolution in every distant corona from the camera and improve performance, but baked shadows layer are static, highly filtered and pasted over terrain and other static elements, right?

Well there's no point in rendering something like an AI car's shadow in detail from a distance, the same way you'd not have a LOD 0 car model at a distance, it's just a waste of resources.

I'm making this shit up by the way, pure guess work.

PM Helios and see what he says.

Oh I thought you were on about the car.

Pause the video and highlight the shadow you meant, I'm curious and can't see shit on my phone.

edit:
Ok, I see what you mean now.

Doesn't appear to happen on Blim's footage, probably a glitch or the poor quality of the video.

I just noticed, the hud moves now.

Well holy shit.

Impressive.

EDIT: Ahh! I see how they're doing it! It's brilliant. You can see the arrows even reflect. It's a basic screen space reflection using part of the buffer for the reflection, but it looks super clear. It works amazingly well.

"very few people can follow me into the rabbit hole when I talk physics", and he talks about the loss of surface friction(!) on laguna's tarmac. (ie, exactly what I pointed out/nitpicked as wrong/too forgiving on car collisions)
wtf was that video with the crash so deceiving?

What's this from, the closed door presentation?
yes, its the presentation Dan should have made to the fans, but did it inside closed doors. mostly known stuff, or stuff that was reported by those who attended

Holy moly.

It's like them saying "fuck off and play something else" at this point.

Whoops should have listened to it before replying.

No career endurance is a big deal but as long as there's the custom race setup with tyre wear/fuel I'll say no more.

Seeing the other cars in reflections in hoodview is awesome.

But the accuracy of reflections seem way off, shouldnt we see more of the sky. Especially how the specular highlight on the road extends itself onto the hood. Thats all kinds of wrong.

It's wrong. They use a screen space solution. So nothing outside of the screen (including most of the sky which we should be seeing) will be rendered.

I think it's good enough. I like how clean they are.

really impressive reflection... I really hope we not only get reflection as a norm this gen but hope to see some refraction in liquid substances as well

Inaccurate and an old technology holdover from Forza 3 I think.

At first glance it looks kinda cool but like others have mentioned its just a cheap trick.

well.. everything is a cheap trick. all ones and zeros. what you should care is how effective it is.

Oh no, I understand that for sure, but its not really representative of what would really be reflected on the hood in real life.

And once you see that it's essentially your screen flipped upside down, it's just too obvious.

Goal is realism.

I have questions on that interior windscreen reflection as well. Have a feeling it's gonna be sort of the same thing where it looks neat at first, but when you realize that it shows itself exactly the same and only when the sun is in a certain position.

Whereas it should be visible in some capacity at all times...such as that new drive club footage.

EDIT: The other car's reflection looks like it's just a cube map. But it's super high quality. These reflections are making me happy.

God I hate these cut backs. I mean Gran Turismo has the same quality reflections for all cars and that's on PS3. In FM5 it seems that some completely random crap is reflected. Not cool, T10.

Interiors of AI cars remains darkened. :-\

It seems to me that all graphical tricks to improve performance from FM4 are still present:
-30 fps mirrors
-30 fps reflections
-darkened out AIs
-simple reflections on AIs
-AI's shadows are of lower resolution than player's car
-the gamescom build has no reflections on the car in 3rd person view, the bridges and stuff aren't reflected

Yep, the 1st thing I noticed was the lack of reflections on the car in 3rd person view.

EDIT: I'm quoting myself (shamefully), to not write all over again... I posted this after E3 announcement.

Please don't hate me: I love FM and have bought all of them.
After watching the two Gamersyde 60fps offscreen videos I noticed this:

+ Amazing models and shaders!
+ Great Light
+ Nice shadows
+ Minor pop-in at the track
+ Nice dashboard window reflections
- Dashboard window reflections updated at 30fps
- Rearview mirrors updated at 30fps
- Faked reflections in car's body (in interior view) -> probably used just one cubemap? ( + but updated at 60fps I think)
- Car's body reflections (in outside view) updated at 30fps ( + but accurate reflections I think)
- Objects in rearview mirror disapearing abruptly

reflections look 60fps to me

>_>... erm... as much as I'd take GT over Forza any day, the reflections on GT5 are bad in comparison. They are low resolution and don't even reflect other cars. Only the environment around them.

I was hyped for it but bored within weeks.

The novelty of a quality driving model was cool and all but the circuits forgettable and roads not exactly suited for supercars.

I still like to have a little drive now and again and the rally pack makes a nice change but the game doesn't pull me back like an FM or GT.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I have enjoyed every Forza but just couldn't get into Horizon at all.

French ladies or endurance races.

Tyre wear and fuel use to be ridiculously simplified yet again. Yay, 10 laps of the ring and still have half a tank and barely used a 5th of the tyres...

Wouldn't have taken too much effort to allow accelerated fuel and tyre wear or force pit stops.

Do we know they haven't made any changes here?

Well, he said "Go online" for endurance races cause there you can set it up yourself.

My God. Is this really the official fuck-you-stupid-consumers answer?

Know what you can't do in online races? Pause the game.

Know what you often need to do in endurance races to answer the phone, take a piss, stretch your back or answer the doorbell? PAUSE THE FUCKING GAME.

Jesus, once again, I wonder how much game developers actually play the games they are developing.

How fucking hard would it have been to include a toggle to select whether you want/do not want endurance races in the career mode?

Endurance races are awesome, but racing against AI isn't really that fun and that's why I didn't finish the last two 24H racers in GT5. The only problem with endurance races online is possibility of loosing connection during the race. If it's at the beginning then fuck it, not a big deal, but it's not a nice thing after few hours in.

The best way to do it, would be to allow people set custom offline races against AI. Where players could choose number of laps or make a race time limited etc. If they put Endurance races into carer mode then lots of people won't finish it, I can tell you that much.

I think endurance racing in games like this is pretty damn pointless, but I agree, it should have been easy enough to include the option to do it so people don't complain.

Helios, do you know if Forza 5 will be available for download from Marketplace on Day 1? I have it pre-ordered but there might be a chance it won't get here on release day and two days of waiting will be a nightmare for me lol.

As a plasma owner I really appreciate that floating HUD. Always used to switch a lot of it off in previous Forza's. I'll still switch it off on occasion for immersion purposes, but I will be having most of it on when I'm playing online. Nice touch that I wish more devs would implement.
