Rumor: The Last of Us 2 in production, launching in 2015

I think The Last of Us was fine as a stand alone game. I hope the rumor is fake.

After the success of TLoU you really think they'd leave it as just a standalone game?

And the ending of the first lends itself perfectly to leading into another game.

I wouldn't mind another game, but imo, one more is probably the stretch.

A sequel with
older Ellie
would be interesting, if handled properly.

Calling BS. Didn't Naughty Dog state that Uncharted 4 won't be till 2015? Yea, it will be a 2016 title in the fall.

No, that was only referring to Easter Eggs. The comment did not pertain to TLoU : GOTY edition and UC4 for 2014.

Just as a reminder I found the link to the news I was referring to about Sony registering Last of us 2 and 3 domains.

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/406553/the-last-of-us-2-and-3-domains-registered-by-sony/

Sure you could say it was just future proofing... but I have no doubt they will eventually come out. A second Uncharted Equivalent IP is not about to end after 1 game.

Of course you could claim Lastofus4.com right now if you want... but Sony could just take it from you with no effort since they own the rights to lastofus.

Set it like 100 years in the future. Cities are gone, crumbled nearly to dust. Any humans that remain exist only in tiny isolated communities. For lack of human hosts, Cordecepts have jumped to more vertibrate species creating vile monsters from the resurgent wildlife and exotic species freed from zoos during the original outbreak. Guns are useless. All the ammunition is used up and there's no industry to make more. Our hero is armed only with crude melee weapons, fire and a bow. It is a dark, forbidding world of ruin and danger: The Last of Our Souls.

boo.

this game does not need a sequal.

Because it had a well executed story?

The game barely ran at an acceptable image quality and framerate on the ps3 and there was almost no enemy variance whatsoever. I struggle to realize why people think that mechanically the series has come even close to hitting its peak.

GAF would freak the fuck out.

Day Zero.

Damn its easy to spread rumors nowadays. Has Omelete leaked anything in the past? Im from brazil and have no idea if they actually know anything. Probably not. 99.99999% not. Now they just post a 100 word topic about "last of Us 2" and an "inside source" and we have a topic filled with replies and even IGN reporting on that. Seriously...

As much as I'm sure this new game would be awesome, I'd rather see Straley and Druckmann do something different with this medium.

Even if it were a new country, new characters ... it'd be much too hard to live up to the original if you are in anyway trying to be like the original, seeing as it's the same franchise. It just sort of deflates the experience.

Refined mechanics, and a cool story and familiar are great, but brand new mechanics and a cool story that is new in every way from environment to enemies is even better.

With that ending, how exactly is this great as a "one off"? I'm pretty sure the good ol' fellas at Naughty Dog could come up with something great for a sequel and it's not like the series is already stagnant (I'm looking at you Ass Creed) to the point were nothing else could be improved about it, plus on new hardware you can count on it being amazing.

Count me in for The Best of Us.

Interesting. I wouldn't be shocked if Naughty Dog told more stories from that universe, but I do hope they leave Joel & Ellie out of it. Their story is closed, and I don't want them opening it again.

I don't think they'd go with "The Last of Us 2" as the title, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a sequel in some shape or form for TLOU.

The world they created in the first game opened up a lot of possibilities to expand upon, and I personally would love to see what they could come up with for a sequel.

As to whether we see a continuation of
Ellie's journey, such as her finding proof that Joel lied to her,
or a completely new story set in the same universe, I think they'd create a great game either way.

As for this rumor in specific though... I don't know, 2015 somehow seems a bit soon when the possibility of future (additional) DLC still exists. I'm sort of leaning towards this rumor being false, because if there IS a TLOU sequel, I don't think it'd be far enough into development to have an estimated release schedule yet.

Very unlikely considering the DLC coming out now and Uncharted 4 for late 2014 probably. Even if they have a third team, let's look at this realistically. For all intends and purposes TLoU could have bombed spectacularly. Why should Sony take such a huge risk and greenlight a sequel to an IP they don't even know the worth of yet? So there is no way production started before July 2013. With all the work they have to do on the PS4 engine it is pretty much impossible to get a sequel done in less than 2.5 years without rushing it. And ND said they want to make sure they get the quality right. So this 2015 rumour reads like total fanfiction.

Maybe we get something else by then, but I doubt it will be TLoU 2...

If there's going to be a sequel, it would most likely have new characters.

Though I wonder if Joel & Ellie would be part of the sequel as guest characters to help out the new characters through DLC scenes for a little while, similar to how it usually is in Super Sentai Crossover movies (such as Goseiger Vs. Shinkenger or Go-Busters Vs. Gokaiger).

If we ever get a sequel, I hope it is about Joel and Ellie. The ending was good, but not good enough that it overshadows my desire for a sequel where the first thing you have to do is murder a certain character.

If it hasn't been said yet. One of the biggest bullet points Sony has been pushing with PS4 is time to polygon. I think we may need to readjust our expectations when it comes to development time.

I think The Last of Us was fine as a stand alone game. I hope the rumor is fake.

Exactly how I feel. I think it stands tall as one of the best games available on PlayStation 3 and by nature, shouldn't get a sequel. Even if its completely new characters in the same universe...I don't want it.

Why? I would love another game from the same world, same mechanics with some innovations. It seems like some people don't want a sequel, because they think a sequel will some how diminish the importance of the original.

Wouldn't mind a prequal. Taking place right after the shit hit the fan, Joel and Tommy (Please no co-op), game spans the 20 years between the prologue and the start of TLOU. Would be interesting playing through the government falling, then the rise of Marshal Law, founding of the fireflies.

Call it "The First of Them".

If Bruce and Neil have more to say about the characters, let them. It's not like when something solid gets a sequel, it all of a sudden can't be amazing by itself anymore. Whatever ND makes, I can be assured it's something they wanted to make, and not some forced corporate push.

If this thread is any indication, the announcement thread is going to be a carnival, where people act surprised that a successful new IP, loved by 98% of the people who play it is getting a sequel.

Why are people saying this? You realise that just because it's a sequel, doesn't mean they have to be the same characters, right? They can create new characters and an entirely new story.

The Last of Us 2 is very, very obviously going to happen. The people that think it won't are probably the same people that thought there wouldn't be an Uncharted 4.

All that said, bullshit on the 2015 part.

I, too, have made up insiders that confirm this website's made up insiders are full of shit.

In any case, predicting that Naughty Dog is working on a sequel to The Last of Us is like predicting there will be a new fucking Call of Duty this year.
