I was actually pretty late to the beastie boys. I'm 32 and my first intro was hello nasty. I liked it but it wasnt until to the 5 boroughs that I really got into them. Its not the type of music I would normally listen to but it just clicked for me, it wasn't about gang bangers and shit like that. It was some normal guys would could rap.

Hot sauce committee I loved, would I enjoy their older stuff or is a product of the time?

Yes. Listen now.

Check out Paul's Boutique - it's timeless in my opinion. Really influential but really good still today. Hey Ladies is the best use of cowbell in a song ever! Lots of sample, a lot of funk based stuff.

Check Your Head and Ill Communication are very diverse and are worth checking out but may take some time to get into. I'd rate those three albums as their best.

(edit - beaten by RNH)

License to Ill has some famous earlier stuff but might be a bit too dated for those who didn't grow up on it - I don't know, I loved the shit out of it back in the day so I'm not sure how someone who is new to it would take it.

I wrote this piece about Adams passing for an Australian music website http://messandnoise.com/articles/4465827

Kinda relates to my experience growing up in Penrith. Beasties and Run DMC were the shit.

This sucks so much - always loved the Beastie Boys. I was listening to Licensed to Ill on the bus home that day, then Hello Nasty as I was walking to Kings Cross St Pancras to meet someone. When I saw the news on Twitter, I was standing outside the glass entrance where everyone smokes, listening to Body Movin'.

I'll remember that forever :(

To elaborate on what I was saying before, it's like they were THE group that did what you wanted to do, matured and experimented at the level of pretty much everyone (at least, guy) in that generation, without letting it go to their head or getting caught up in it. Learnt their lessons about being chauvinistic (though I still love L2I very, very much... the giggling with the doo-wop during Girls always makes me smile) but continued to do what they wanted, all while being adults about it.
Basically, created the music and lived the life in the same way we would have. And remained best friends while doing it.

Can't buy from there though :(

...and that, kids, was the first time I sucked a dick for crack
To me, Hello Nasty was just pure insanity on every level. The beats were layered, thick, the punch lines were incredible, and the flow on every lyrically filled track was just unbelievable. That album has not aged a day, at all.

the only very slight and minuscule positive that has come from this terrible news is that i've listened to paul's boutique as much as when i discovered the record for the first time 10+ years ago. so nostalgic and overwhelming. RIP.

I spent much of the week rewatching the Beasties Criterion, which ended on Alive.

Couldn't have been more appropriate a send-off. Keep on, MCA.

(Always wondered why Fight For Your Right wasn't on there...)

If you haven't checked out their website recently (TBH I hadn't seen it in over a week) there's been an update:

If that's the only media attention either of the remaining two (fuck, that hurts to say :( ) have released, then much respect to them.
