Emo Music |OT| Non-Conforming as Can Be

Didn't know this thread existed, awesome.

Anybody check out the new Marietta album? It was pay what you want on bandcamp a few weeks ago, pretty sure it still is.

Favourite tracks off it are probably Pony Up, Are You Afraid of God? No, But I'm Afraid of You, and No God in New Jersey if anybody wants to take a peek.

I listened to it, I thought it was pretty good. Probably a 7/10. I only listened to it once though, I'll give it another listen. Horse tattoo was my favorite track

Got in a fun discussion about brand new. What do you guys think is their best album? I personally think It's Devil and God, I love it. It's so passionate.

Deja will always be mine but I have a ton of nostalgia for it. I love all their stuff though.

And the lack of Foxing in this OT makes me sad..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvKK_lVi5pM The Magdalene. Their new song that dropped about a month ago

Also Harmlessness leaked :) it good

What? Of course they do.

How so? I know this seems crazy to some of you, but Jawbreaker were not an emo band while they existed. That term has been around since at least the mid 80's. Just because some bands that are considered a part of that genre nowadays list them as a major influence, doesn't mean that's what they were.

In summary.... In my opinion

Jawbreaker. Nope. But I understand why some people consider them an emo band, even though they weren't.

Fugazi: absolutely not. This notion is ridiculous

Unwound: no. I've known these guys since they were in high school and used to watch them play in their basement before they even came up with their band name. Not emo as people or musicians.

.

so what? even if it wasn't necessarily considered emo at its time, it was clearly important and emotional enough to be seen as a part of the genre or at least a big influence from today's point of view...so why not discuss it in a emo thread nowadays?
I know that music-wise it appears to be more punk..but that's really how it all started..punk music with more emotional lyrics etc. .definitely the case with jawbreaker.

Because Jawbreaker weren't an emo band and they think that is an important thing to acknowledge in the grand scheme of things.

Did you ever see Jawbreaker?

stuff has shifted looking back. sure they're not the same as Mineral and stuff, I think everyone knows that, but emo always was a pretty wide term, comprising different styles, yet always with an emotional attitude/tone. maybe a bit vague as you will, even more so today. Because of the variety it's not like you can really narrow it down everytime. Some bands didn't call themselves emo but were regarded as such and the other way around too. It doesn't really matter, there's not "genre police" coming to arrest us. So I think it's totally justified to discuss them here. anything else would be nitpicking imo.

I only saw Blake. He seemed moody, slightly crazy + pissed off but played wonderful music on his guitar nevertheless. total emo in my book.

Listening to The World Is A Beautiful Place and.... new album Harmlesness. It's fucking rad.

It's so good. Have been listening to it recently too.

Also, the new Front Bottoms is great to, totally different from TWIABP of course but also good stuff.

Here's a band I discovered over a decade ago when they did a split (and a tour) with Cursive. My favorite band in Japan, Eastern Youth! They have cited Fugazi as one of their biggest influences, and I would definitely call them emo. They used to be a oi punk band in the early 90's, but by 1997, they came back with a very one-of-a-kind sound. Distinctly Japanese like I haven't heard outside of Enka, both in melody and in classic poetic themes.

Eastern Youth: Sabaku no Kanata E
Eastern Youth: Doa wo Akeru Ore
Eastern Youth: Natsu no Hi no Gogo (this is considered to be their most famous song)
Eastern Youth: Ashioto (This song is the first I ever heard by them. It is still my favorite!)
Eastern Youth: Muyou no Suke
Eastern Youth: Yoake no Uta (this song had the whole crowd at their show BAWLING tears. Their last song of the night, the lead guitar in the pre-verse part sounds so bitter-sweet and nostalgic. If you only listen to one, I suggest this one, although it's slower.)

The latest TWIABP is a very well put together record. I think it marks a very large jump for them in terms of quality and tightness. Cool to see them come this far.

Latest in release is the new Front Bottoms and Better Off, both excellent. Before that was certainly Citizen. As one of the hallmarks of the emo 'revival' in my opinion that record is excellent.

yo thanks for posting these. i'm now a fan.

Choke Up is a band everyone should definitely check out. Their latest album "Black Coffee, Bad Habits" has been a hands down favorite of mine this year. Been turning all my friends on to them as they're miserably unpopular.

Here's a few of their best songs:
Choke Up - Rust
Choke Up - Marcher
Choke Up - KC

I've replayed all the songs on this album to hell & back. Not much music can live up to the kind of savagery I've put this album through, but it remains in the rotation.

This is great. I love the drums in this song.

If you guys are interested in Eastern Youth, I have about 30 more goo songs to recommend. Don't hesitate to ask!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bs1YSiXINU4

Could you say what are your 3 favorite albums from them?

Trying to decide which I like more out of Joy, Departed and Harmlessness

This is difficult

Joy, Departed has more songs that stick out as being rly fucking good that I could just listen to loads in isolation (basically every song, except maybe Fuschia vs You Can't Live There Forever, January 10th, 2014, The Word Lisa and I Can Be Afraid Of Anything probably), but Harmlessness flows better as an album I think

Hm

I've never considered Brand New to be emo. I've seen them labeled as such so many times, but just never understood why.

When I think of "emo" bands, I think of Senses Fail and Simple Plan, both of which I could never really get into.

I would lable Brand New as alt rock/indie rock these days. Deja Entendu had a bit of an emo vibe, but I'd still categorize it under alt rock. Their debut lp obviously is pop punk. Still love it btw.

Genres are just artificial constructs, and we sometimes get distracted in this thread debating whether you consider a band 'emo' or not. I think most would say Simple Plan is firmly in the pop-punk, where Senses Fail is probably closer to being what I would consider emo, but still would consider pop-punk. But, it has nothing to do with how 'dark' or 'heavy' something is. Saves the Day is like quintessentially emo and I think many would consider them firmly pop punk. It's the highs and lows, man. Moody music; minor scale verses into major scale choruses and moody tonal shifts.

Take this song, for example: Rocks Tonic Juice Magic

This song seems like just exploitive try-hard violent, but if you pay attention, the desperate violence action slowly cranks down and he slowly becomes more sincere and vulnerable. In a song about mutilation and cannibalism, the 3rd verse about buying Lemonade comes off as ESPECIALLY cruel, because it's not just pornographic B-Horror Movie violence... it's actually seemingly real and vulnerable. He starts out being desperately angry, to feeling betrayed, to feeling bitter-sweet about how things were at the end. To me, this is Emo. So, it's all up to how you feel about it. Brand New may not be so emo anymore, but they did release one of the best mass-appeal emo records ever IMO.

I'd say this is where I lean as well. Brand New is my favorite band, and has been for a very long time. I suppose the negative stigma, at least in my social circles, on "emo" music has developed my aversion to the term, especially applying it to Brand New.

Been listening to a lot of Cloakroom and The Sidekicks lately. Definitely check them out if you have a chance.

Cloakroom has a very interesting sound with sludgy guitars and drony, Morrissey-esque vocals. Lossed Over is a phenomenal monster of a song. Saw them open for Brand New earlier this year and the crowd just didn't get it. Total bummer.

The Sidekicks are fantastic! Their last LP, Awkward Breeds, is earnest, real, and sophisticated in a way that you don't see with most bands in this scene nowadays. They just put out a new record this year and it's really moody. Pet has so much atmosphere.

By the way, I love how this thread is chugging along lately. Seems like a true Emo revival is taking place! Some of these newer bands really do the genre justice like I haven't seen much over the last decade.

Was into both songs. Especially the Pet track. Vocals, and to some extent the sonics, gave me a Pinback vibe. Which is an absolutely great thing and I'm definitely gonna check that album out.

Will check em out later. :)

In Austin in the mid-90s, Jawbreaker were referred to as emo. I can confirm via various friends (and my wife) that they were also referred to as emo in the midwest (Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan specifically) and DC. This isn't a revisionism thing. Judging by your post, I'm guessing you're a bit older than me. I'm 41; no spring chicken.

Fugazi, nope. Unwound, nope. Never heard of either being referred to as emo.

Yes, I know that. It doesn't mean it's accurate. Again, just my opinion. I saw jawbreaker 3 times between 91 and 96 and I interviewed Blake. I think I have an accurate grasp on what they were.

Didn't even know this thread existed, glad to see people with similar taste in music. The World is a Beautiful Place's Harmlessness is such a great album. One of my favorites from last year though has got to be Prawn's album Kingfisher, haven't been able to read through the thread, but they've probably been mentioned. This song just gives me straight up chills.
