How in the world can this be permitted.
That's going to be quite a home field advantage...
How does this even happen? Why is this even happening? I googled photos of their waters, its atrocious.
They'll probably need to use the bathroom there too since the Olympic Village plumping will be overflowing. At least they can eat a snack if they get hungry halfway through.

This will literally be a shitshow and I'm ashamed I will probably watch out of pure morbid curiosity.
Awww yeah, we're at the Age of Discovery.A public health expert told the AP that Rio's sewage system is "comparable with London or Paris in the 14th or 15th century."
Why just the mouths
Put tape over your nostrils, ears, buttholes, crotch holes, and any type of hole where fecal matter might go into
I would not swim in that water for a million dollars. Maybe I would. I dunno.
That's going to be quite a home field advantage...
Is there anything that can be done about the IOC being blatantly corrupt? That's the only way this can be explained. I hope the media doesn't try to sugar coat the conditions if they're truly this bad. If dead fish are visible during a race, I want the commentators to voice their disgust and bewilderment that this is happening, not clever camera angles. I want to hear shit like, "Bob, as long as the triathlete can stay out of that patch of dead fish and floating feces, it's anyone's race."
So what you're saying is shit just got real?
At least they can eat a snack if they get hungry halfway through.

The ioc tried, but the athletes wanted to compete at those places, since they already trained there for a while. Is there any level of disease and bacteria that would actually cause the IOC to cancel these events or have them take place somewhere else?
Are lawsuits possible?

money cures all ills.

From 2015 but still...
I feel bad for the athletes. With the Olympics only being once every four years a lot of these athletes don't have the option to just sit this one out and compete in the next one which may or may not be another absolute shit show. They have trained their asses off for what could be a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Water is usually a problem. Sidney also had a lot of the same comments about it's water back then:like other Olympics in the past...
You doubting Japan's ability to hold games?
I'm still super stoked for the log races
Hey, it just means that the people of Rio are contributing, helping, and participating in the games . . . albeit in new and uh . . . unique ways

When Rio said they would clean the Guanabara Bay most of the researchers said it was a pipe dream. A shame. :(
During a surfing competition held in Rio last year, organizers say that a quarter of the participants suffered from nausea, diarrhea or vomiting after entering the water.
The OIC should be ashamed of themselves for allowing this actual shit show to take place. I'm a firm believer that the OIC should designate 3 or 4 locations around the world to host the Olympics permenatny on a rotation. I don't even understand why a city would even want to host the Olympics in the first place. They almost always lose money.
If there were 4 different sites for the Olympics it would also be so much more environmentally friendly. The current systems just promotes our 'throw away' society. The host city wastes a lot of energy and resources to build mini cities that are only used a handful of times. I'm sure some of the buildings and housing can be re-purposed but not enough to justify the cost both financially and environmentally.
Imagine training your whole life to be the best and then being told the competition will be held in poo water.
Can you really call yourself the best unless you compete in poo water?
Think about that for a second.
When the athletes have been training years if not their entire lives for this moment, it's difficult to blame them for wanting to contiune. In their minds, this is just another obstacle to overcome. The ioc tried, but the athletes wanted to compete at those places, since they already trained there for a while.
