Also, I added some nice texture, but that's really up to Evilore . . . :)
Toss out those ideas, people!

m0dus, what suite are you using for your 3d? I'm liking the direction you're going, but I'm not 100% sold on the lighting at the tail end... it looks a little 'fake', but it all depends on the direction we want to go.

Also, since we're doing an ad for television, you wouldn't need to render anything larger than 1280x720, don't worry about doing 2k or higher, if it's broadcast, it will likely be played on mostly SD screens.

Also, be aware of title/action safe areas.. I've sent you a PM with my contact info, get in touch with me and I can help you out with broadcast rules.

and maybe some lighting, too ;)

I am guessing something that is just over the top in special effects, epic music, and explosions and lasers wouldn't be good enough?

I still say we should make a 2 minute commercial and see if we can get it on the air once with a budget of $5

That logo doesn't look really that hot actually. Besides the fact that the texture looks pretty bad, the whole scene is way too black, when the site's main color is white.
Hopefully if EviLore spends all that money on a commercial, we actually spend some time making it too ;)

The texture aint too great and the backdrop should be more of a subtle gradient instead of pure black, but still looking awesome.

Wat, it's awesome. We only need to worry about how awesome it will be, not if it has any value for the site or whatever.

I fucking love it, the bright white is perfect for coming out of a transition of the meme-stuff. Meme-overload on the screen before it, like mosaic with dramatic violins shrieking then the bright logo steps in and all of a sudden it's calm. Then at the end, it blows up of course, have you made the explosion yet m0dus? Oh wait, first the US flag and the dinosaur, we need some good license-free footage of those.

Hm, maybe just CG render the flag? Are the DinoGAF dinos licensed?

No black is awesome, way more of an impact that way. Nothing wrong with the texture too imo, it's like this gritty stuff, obviously badass looking, the way it should. A huge flag waving arising from the darkness then some dinos roaring with bursting volcanoes followed by an explosion would be perfect here.

ITT: people who think they are art directors.

We need to establish a team to take control of this ad and run with it, there's no way we'll EVER appease everyone and this design-before-boards is a bad idea.

m0dus, it's entirely possible whatever it is you're rendering may not be used... I'd hold off on anything too ambitious just yet.

As for the rest of you, opinions are great, but we'll never get anywhere if everyone has a different idea.

people are coming up with all these insane ideas and while that's good, they're not necessarily GOOD ideas.

Don't forget this actually has to air on TV, and we can't just make whatever we want and expect it to air. There's a screening process, there's going to be things that prevent us from having dinosaurs and all the other incredibly high-budget ideas being thrown about in here.

We've got to be smart about what we do, and we have to think inside the rules of airing an ad on television, let alone fox news.

Here's my idea:
an ad for the DudeBro game, like a movie trailer. EviLore doing voice-over, mixed with Shanadeus' idea of satire for Fox News --

------------------------------------------------------------------
[Black screen, epic movie trailer music, starting softly]
"DO YOU BELIEVE IN YOUR COUNTRY?"
[Flashes in white to the waving american flag/eagle flying and the hum/music gets louder]

"SO DOES HE."
[silhouette of DudeBro against white background, slowly zooming in]

"DO YOU BELIEVE IN THE SECOND AMENDMENT, THE RIGHT TO CARRY FIREMARMS?"
[Flashes in white to the liberty statue and marching american soldiers]

"SO DOES HE."
[same silhouette of DudeBro against white background, continue slow zoom]

"DO YOU BELIEVE IN DOING WHATEVER IT TAKES TO STOP EVIL?"
[show war/terrorist scenes]

"SO DOES HE."
[same silhouette of DudeBro against white background, continue slow zoom]

[The screen flashes to white and the DUDEBRO logo appears. By now music sounds epic]
"DUDEBRO" [Appearing underneath the logo and spoken]
[Fade out to white and the following appears]
"COMING TO SCREENS FALL 2010" [logo and spoken]
"BELIEVE" [Appearing and spoken]
[Show NeoGAF - logo only]
------------------------------------------------------------------

I know the point of the commercial is not to advertise NeoGAF, but we can at least advertise the game that represents NeoGAF as a mysterious character/media coming in the future that supports the Fox News viewers' ideals (hype). And if we omit the word NeoGAF altogether and only put the logo, it will add to the hype and be more awesome.

It's not like it is in not America where you can become successful by using dirty communist socialism. If you screw over your constituents, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is seppuku.
What this means is the American public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to vote for either party, nor will they support any of Congress's acts. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Obama has alienated an entire country with this move.

Fade out to stock footage of last seconds of 1972 US V. Russia gold medal basketball game when US is celebrating.

Cut back to thread with Evilore posting "This is NeoGaf Dude"

Cut to game when OMG the ref gave the Russians three extra seconds and they hit the game winning shot.

Flash NeoGaf logo voice over that says Believe.

I'm no Art Director but I don't think what I said was wrong at all. I don't think I'm a complete amateur either, and have enough visual sense to tell if something looks wrong.

Anyway, yes, we need storyboards first. I guess we will go with 30 sec commercials or even below that, right? I'm not a big fan of having lots of memes around and all that. Ideally, commercials over the top like the ones in MGS4 would be perfect, but all of them are CG-heavy, and after seeing what's happening with Dudebro, I'm not sure we have enough CG artists or even people who will really stick to this for a long time. I'd love to be wrong, though.

I'm not questioning if you think it looks wrong - I agree, the lighting and texturing doesn't scream 'broadcast quality' to me, so in that respect I agree with you.

I'm not even 'officially' on this project, I'd love to be, but I've heard nothing from EviLore at all, so until then I'm no different than anyone else in here.

All I want to do is keep people's expectations in check, and everyone who says "ooh that looks great" just because it's shiny 3d, well, it throws away any real constructive criticism that m0dus or anyone could ever get.

I think certian people are being a bit too eager about things and are producing things on a whim.. it's not the 'correct' way to do things, especially if we want to do it right.

Heh, whoa there people--those screencaps are proof of concept, nothing final. I threw the texture in there as placeholder for now, just as an afterthought. I wanted to give people something to base their ideas upon. Really, this commercial might only be text bumps, followed by swelling music and a rotating logo at the end :). Nothing is final until those who are in charge of the final concept (evilore) say so.

And people need to set their sights on what will be the most cost effective, here--ideas involving actors, sets and whatnot may simply be too much in the way of resources. (For what it's worth, I'll donate my time and these assets for free...)

:) I didnt want to offend your artistic talent, believe me It's one of the main things I hate about working in the public eye, everyone's a critic!

Check your PMs, I'd like to chat with you on a few things; any chance you could throw the 3d file of the logo over so I could play around with some lighting as well, I'd rather use your original than recreate it.

Yep, I don't think we need any set or actor. For a 15 or 30 seconds commercial we can do fine just with CG (and I don't mean just 3D, obviously).

Anyway, without storyboards we aren't getting anywhere.. (not that I'll be am active member of this, as I already have enough to do with Dudebro and other projects, but still..)

The only way this will work is if there's actual proper story boards and a script correctly written that meets a 30 second spot. People need to realize 30 seconds is not a lot of time and story boards are essential. I took an advertising class in college, but that was ten years ago and my ideas suck.

Don't sweat it--really, I'll work within whatever concept is ultimately decided upon. I threw that last shot in there just to give people some ideas. The final product will use photometric lighting and a completely different renderer (mental ray) which will give it more definition (but will also take much, much longer to render. Believe it or not, this is a draft created in scanline.) and no, no safezones applied for that very reason. ;-)

Anyway, for all we know, EviLore wanted this to be just 'Badass', as he doesn't really need any advertising for the website (and as the video linked on the OP demonstrates, we probably wouldn't get that many new visitors, anyway).

So yeah, with that in mind, you all should start working on some sort of 'badass' storyboard/script.

My idea:

a guy screaming to a computer screen... Then his mom enters and he says "I'm busy mom...I'm defending my idea, I believe In it"

then another kid does about the same, and another one and another one.

then a black screen says: "and what do you believe?"

This is in the brainstorming stage. All ideas are valid. The more different the better. Consensus comes after this stage. I don't think we should do something like the Dudebro process where there is concept art being posted 3 months from release, but sometimes it's the bad ideas that inspires the good ones.

hey m0dus, if you rendered what you have now, how long would the render take per frame? (with mental ray and whatever safezones are)

Should really just be a collage of stupid meme's we've lifted from across the internet, from owls to the tokyo zoo, so on and so forth, to finally just a picture of a plane taking off.

then you get the Crab Battle guy to say "Believe."

If we're gonna advertise DudeBro, this is definitely the way to go.

I've been finding some free images on wikicommons (Will try clips later) for the satirical ad idea and I'll try to piece it together into some sort of cohesive clip under 30 seconds:

-Black screen, patriotic music/national anthem-
"DO YOU BELIEVE IN YOUR COUNTRY?"
-Flashes in white to a panning of: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/88/PBBP_American_Flag.jpg -
"DO YOU BELIEVE IN FREEDOM?"
-Flashes in white to a panning of: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/37/Liberty-statue-from-below.jpg/800px-Liberty-statue-from-below.jpg -
"DO YOU BELIEVE IN LIFE, LIBERTY AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS"
-Flashes in white to a panning of: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/93/Family_on_a_beach.jpg/800px-Family_on_a_beach.jpg -
"DO YOU BELIEVE IN ONE NATION UNDER GOD?"
-Flashes in white to a panning of: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/79/Baldknobcross.jpg -
"DO"
-Make a dun-dunn sound like in transformers and flash the DO in and out of focus+darkness (ex. sound: http://www.freesound.org/samplesViewSingle.php?id=92630 ) -
"YOU"
-Flashes of gaf-related images faster and faster, while increasing the tempo of the beat-
"BELIEVE"
-Make a roar-like sound or something (ex: http://www.freesound.org/samplesViewSingle.php?id=84557) -
-Then explode everything ( http://www.fotosearch.com/CSV000/k1901799/-
-The screen goes white, and you see m0dus logo appear-
"NEOGAF" - Appears underneath the logo
-Fade out to a white screen and the following text appears:-
"BELIEVE" - Appearing in the middle of the screen and whispered

Here is my idea of hyping a product yet never revealing what it is:

[words fly towards the screen]
"The best thing since sliced bread"

[cut to man on the street playing with his phone]
"It's part of my daily life, it helps me get through the day"

[words fly towards the screen]
"More powerful than a MEGATON Bomb"

[cut to lawyer shuffling through papers at her desk]
"I wouldn't have made it through law school without it"

[words fly towards the screen]
"More influential than an Obama Speech spoken by the Pope himself"

[cut to happy couple eating dinner at a fancy restaurant]
"....Otherwise we would have never met, and that is why we are thankful"

[words fly towards the screen]
"A gateway to a better life"

[cut to science professor lecturing a full class]
"It makes life worth living and it wouldn't be the same without it"

[queue the NeoGAF logo that m0dus made complete with "BELIEVE" suggestion that I made]
"BELIEVE" (whispered)

I updated my first Idea with pics just to show how easy it would be to make happen with a few GAF volunteers and a video camera and Evilore doing voice-over for all the words flying at the screen.

Does anyone like where that idea is headed? any suggestions or edits that would make it better?

1. if evilore is voicing it, it doesnt make sense for him to voice different characters. and genders. lol.
2. memes are a dumb draw, if the point of the commercial is to actually gain new members. including and putting emphasis on MEGATON in a way that only a gaffer would understand is a bad idea, cause it would seem weird otherwise.
3. 'otherwise we would have never met, and that is why we are thankful' is far far too mushy-gushy, and people will immediately think its a dating site regardless of the rest of the ad.
4. 'gateway to a better life' as a phrase only works if it is voiced gaudily, outlandishly, with a lot of ridiculous emphasis to stop it from being a again too mushy.
5. "It makes life worth living and it wouldn't be the same without it" is awkward phrasing, but could work.

i like sliced bread, man on street, some type of student (lawyer too professional a position perhaps?) the obama speech by pope ideas though.

Please, please let's not use memes. I cringe whenever I hear people try to use internet memes in real life. I cast a vote for the explosions/dragons/general-badassery direction for the commercial. If somebody watching has never heard of neogaf, they'll think it's a club of total badassitude.
