The Mega-Cave Shooter Post, because they're totally awesome and sweet

Chacranajxy,

How do PCBs work with the XRGB/Flamemeister? Like, if I output the PCB through a supergun via RGB I can connect it to the Upscaler then pipe it through my HDTV? Would not it be rotated on the side? There is no option to format it in the middle of the 16/9 is there? Or do I have to rotate the monitor?

I don't actually have a supergun to try it with (been meaning to put one together for... about 3 years now), but I don't see why it wouldn't work. When I was looking into the matter, it sounded like the XRGB was the solution for that. What I do know is that it won't rotate the game on its own. You have to rotate the monitor. I seem to recall there being encoders for the supergun itself that would flip the image, but I haven't really kept up with that stuff so I'm not sure if the ones that do that are very good.

But Ima have to get that supergun done, because I want to goddamn play Dodonfuckingpachi. And not have to play through some Japanese VN to get to it. And even then, the port on Instant Brain isn't even supposed to be good. And what the fuck kind of name is Instant Brain anyway? Do they not know about English slang? They might as well have called it "Immediate Blowjob", which I guess makes sense because the game probably sucks dick.

Hmm,

So best to output it to a little computer monitor with HDMI...like those posted earlier that rotate? Is it even beneficial?

I'm just wondering what is the best option as I can not rotate my 42" TV since it is my TV to watch movies with.

I got the upscaler, got the supergun just not sure on how to display them since they are vertical games.

Big Cave time for everybody around the world with AKS releasing in multiple territories, Mushi in Japan, and Saidaioujou already in arcades. Hoping folks might take some time to list their top five Cave games (regardless of platform)

1. Mushihimesama Futari 1.5/Black Label
2. Deathsmiles
3. DoDonPachi
4. Mushihimesama
5. Espgaluda

I could play these games all day. Lots of other really great Cave stuff too.

I'm burned about the fact that I was genuinely looking forward to getting a Cave shooter on the Vita.
I'm double burned about the fact that the Android versions of DDP Resurrection and EspII are available in Japan and Korea only.

Then I remember the time I tried to import Ketsui Death Label for DS and having my order cancelled by two retailers because of unavailability.

Why must your (recent) games slip my grasp, Cave? Why?

My Top 5

EspGaluda II
Mushihimesama Futari
Ketsui
Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu Black Label
Dodonpachi Daioujou

Funny enough i love the dodonpachi games despite a massive loathing of chaining
Akai katana will prob make that list soon as well, once i get it.

Cabs are awesome if you have the space for one, otherwise I'd get a TV to rotate rather than computer monitor cause the size, like 30-40" range. Not sure about the newer cabs with LCDs, but CRT ones are generally 27" (keep in mind that's 4:3 vs 16:9, hence the need for a larger screen).

Smaller computer displays are fine, but extra size makes a noticeable difference, particularly when up close like on a cab.

My Top 5:

DoDonPachi
ProGear No Arashi
DoDonPachi Daifukkatsu Black Label Arrange
Mushihimesama
Ketsui

Please stay alive, Cave ! We need you.

Out of curiosity, can one even get a new CRT these days? Because I want one for the retro-fab appeal, but don't want one that some dumbass from Tennessee with a beer gut watched BBW porn on.

Top 5 (in no particular order):

EspGaludaII
Muchi Muchi Pork
Mushihimesama Futari
DDP
EspRaDe

I picked up Akai Kitana this week while traveling, so I won't be able to play it for a while. If Cave goes down, I hope the talent there continues to keep the shmup fire burning elsewhere.

I haven't checked but I doubt it. Even the high end computer monitor space has moved to LCDs I think (although I wouldn't be surprised to see some CRT broadcast monitors or something still in use). One thing I never thought about, do the arcade modes on the 360 games actually output low res or just display pixel doubled?

Guess I'll toss in my top 5, particularly since one of them hasn't been mentioned I think (and no particular order other than Ketsui at #1):
Ketsui
DDP
Dangun Feveron
Espgaluda

...guess I'm not sure what else to put up there. I haven't played much of the newer ones outside the iOS ports or some short stints on 360 so it's hard to make a judgement call on those. Out of the older games I know I probably wouldn't put Guwange or DonPachi up there while DOJ can go to hell, I liked ESP.Ra.De a bunch (enough to get the PCB when I was still buying). I liked Progear's music and art a lot, although I don't remember if I ever fully got a grasp of the scoring system, same goes for the Mushi games (but even more clueless about scoring).

Of what I've played on iOS I like DFK and Espgaluda II a lot. I'm hoping SDOJ gets playable at home in some form cause it looks pretty great, barring the awkwardness I'd feel for picking the B-expert combo...

Pixel doubled for sure.

Pixel doubled for sure.

Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Ketsui, for example, looks absolutely perfect on 360. Even sharper than the Donpachi and Espgaluda ports I was playing fairly recently, which were actually low-res (I ran them through an XRGB, too, for what it's worth.)

Also, some Cave questions for anybody who can answer.

1) Why does Donpachi repeat the same music for stage 1 and 2? Or is that a quirk of the PS1 port?

2) In the second stage of Dodonpachi, why do plants start growing in the blown up building when you laser over it?

1) The arcade version is the same. They didn't have enough music for the whole game lol

2) If you make them grow to the maximum, you get some bonus points. I don't think you need to use laser, just stay over them and they'll grow. AFAIK no other 'Pachi uses this mechanic, and even in DDP it happens only in stage 2.

Not gonna lie... Cave's big support for iOS was a huge reason why I re-bought iPhone again last year.

Thanks! Always wondered about these two things.

Not going to make a top 5 since I've played only four Cave games yet. Espgaluda II seems to be pretty popular in here. Guess I must add it to my collection sooner or later as well. Does anybody know where to get it for a reasonable price?

I'm waiting for my new, sealed copy of Mushihimesama Futari 1.5 LE to come in the mail, hopefully will get it sometime next week. Question time. Is 1.5 considered the ultimate version/black label for the game? Also, is the 1.5 DLC a separate version of the game that gets stored on the hard drive or does it more like a patch?

Also, another major issue is my 360 is red ringed and it will be awhile before I get a slim. I plan on reviving for awhile it using the "towel trick" so I can play the game until I get a new system. Once I get a slim will there be any issues in transferring the 1.5 DLC and other save data over with a HD transfer cable?

I also plan on picking up Rising Star game's rev of DDP Resurrection, is that version complete as well/how does the DLC work? And are there issues with video if I don't have a PAL TV?

If you've played DDP Saidaioujou, would it even slot in?

Here are mine:

1) Mushi Futari (XBOX 360)
2) Espgaluda II (iOS)
3) Espgaluda (PS2)
4) Donpachi (Saturn, PS)
5) Ibara Kuru (PCB)

1)Mushihimesama (PS2) - Shame the re-release is region locked, hopefully someone will pick it up someday.
2)Progear No Arashi (CPS2)
3)DoDonPachi DOJ
4)Batsugun - Obviously not a Cave game but it was Toaplan's last game (whose former staffers gave birth to Cave) plus it was worked on by Joker Jun and the weapon system is very DDP'ish.
5)DDP

I just got myself a iPad 3 and decided to break her in with a litte ESPgaluda II HD an DDP Resurrection HD. I think I prefer DDPR on iOS to the 360 port.

Edit: Batsugun is an awesome game. I played the ROM years back and bought the Saturn port immediately after. Worth every penny.

Does the Japanese one ship overseas? I want some soundtracks before they go out of print (again) but the few that they're offering at the moment aren't even on sale. They had some on Amazon JP, but since they're considered a third party seller they don't ship internationally. Really would've wanted the Ibara OST for only 1800 yen.

I can't recommend redeeming anything on a dead 360 - the transfer cable only transfers the data, but not the licenses (so you'll be required to use only the redeeming gamertag to use your content, and only while connected to Live). There is an online license transfer tool, but you can only use that once a year and it requires redownloading all your content.

I don't think you'll have any issues running PAL DFK, though you will need a European gamertag to purchase the DLC content.

Thanks for the advice, guess it would be better to try finding a used/refurbed Slim then.

edit: The Euro DLC for the game is region free too I assume, just that I would have to log in with my Euro tag every time I want to use it?

Does redeeming the Futari 1.5 code require a Japanese tag?

As said, as long as you're on the console the DLC was first purchased/downloaded on, any gamertag can use the content, even offline. Things only start getting restrictive when you are not on the original console.

Don't remember if the Futari 1.01 code requires a JP gamertag.

Yeah, I thought about asking for a british/european seller in my post, but didn't specify it after all, so no problem. Looked a bit myself and found it at Solaris Japan for only 30 €.
Is only the Platinum version of Espgaluda II region-free or can I carelessly grab any version of it?

yup, the only version not region-free is the LE disc.

Ok, thanks. Any differences between the normal and platinum releases? Think I'll go with platinum, if not. At least it's like only half the price.

no differences with the game disc. the first print of regular ver had OST included but the Plat does not.

All right, thank you. I don't think I'll need the OST, so I'm going to order the platinum version together with Akai Katana as soon as I get paid. Don't know why I've ignored Espgaluda II always up to this point, but now it feels like I can't do without it. MMS/PS is the only one of the region-free or western releases missing in my collection. Maybe some day I'll get it too, although it might get pretty rare...

For CRTs,

I picked up one of these a couple years back (Tri-snyc):

http://www.niemandisplays.com/

Pretty awesome but it does not have a case and is bare. I even emailed the dude to see if he could make a shell but he said no. Otherwise a nice CRT display for <$500.
how do you even buy one? Just call/e-mail and say that you're interested?

------
as for my rankings
1. Mushihime-sama Futari ver. 1.5/Black Label
2. Ketsui Kizuna Jigoku Tachi
3. Espgaluda II
4. DoDonPachi Dai-Ou-Jou
5. Akai Katana Shin

Yep, that is what I did. The guy is super nice. He knows all about candy cabs and stuff. I think he had a dealer on the east coast send it to me (since I'm in CA and the company is in Canada). I forgot how it was delivered, but the box was really heavy.

Also add, I'm not sure if he still sells them, the CRTS. But I think so going by the site. He puts them in things like Casinos and Golden Tee cabs.

Oh nice, didn't know anyone was selling imports on Amazon, I've been holding onto a $50 gift card for a while now.
I couldn't rank Cave's top 5 for the life of me.

safe bet that Ketsui is somewhere around the top, though.
Yeah outside of Ketsui I just kind of picked games by elimination, it's the only one for me that's like automatically up there. Well that and Dangun, just cause I have a lot of memories of playing crazy with Uo-Poko in that, as well as being my first PCB so I played a lot by default.

I think what I like most about both is that they play fast and encourage playing suicidally cause their scoring systems. And they're pretty simple/straightforward, relative to a lot of the other systems at least.

Small correction, you can do it once every 4 months.

That's what I'm planning to do soon since I have ordered a Japanese 4GB system and have run out of space on my PAL 250GB one.
I already have a 320GB HDD, but not the transfer cable.
I'll transfer everything to the 320 and use the 250 in my Japanese one to install the games I've ordered as well as the ones I plan to get in the near future. :)

It's a bit soon to list my top 5 since I'm awaiting several Japanese only 360 conversions as we speak.
But as of right now, Dodonpachi, Mushihimesama and ESPGaluda 2 would probably be on there. Although I have a feeling Ketsui will soon follow them, as will Akai Katana.
Now if only we could get a great conversion of ESP Ra De and Progear.... I only played them a couple of times on MAME, but since I don't like using emulators like that myself, I never played them again afterwards...

Looks like they changed it, then. License transferring from console to console was definitely once a year when I did this (in 2008).

I don't know if it has been mentioned in here, but Asada hinted in a recent interview that there might still be some packaged releases coming after Mushihime-sama. It sure is hard to say what's going on at Cave, but let's hope for the best.

Looking to finally get around to modding an arcade stick with some better parts. I remember hearing about Lizard Lick Amusements in this thread, but it looks like they've shut down.

Where is the best/cheapest place to order a new stick/buttons from? Also, I know Seimetsu sticks are generally preferred for shooters. Just to hear from you guys, why the preference? I want to swap out because I feel like my sticks are pretty unresponsive, especially after playing some Cave stuff on cabinets when I was at Magfest. Thanks for the input.
