The UK votes to leave the European Union |OUT2| Mayday, Mayday, I've lost an ARM

Just saw that the3million aren't very happy with what May has offered here, as it uses the phrase "EU citizens in the UK lawfully". There point was basically around whether "lawfully" includes people getting private medical insurance or using the NHS - as it stands at the moment, the Home Office have been demanding that EU citizens have had private healthcare to qualify for permanent residency, which has been a huge point of contention for them, and looks like it will continue to do so

Given that, this doesn't seem like as good news as it seemed first reading it yesterday

edit:

Now Gisela Stuart is saying the referendum was “abuse of democratic process”

Well, thanks for that Giesla....

Think this is referring to CSI (Comprehensive Sickness Insurance) - link to what it is

Basically, there are certain segments of EU citizens this applies to. Students and self sufficient people (e.g. mothers/fathers (but statistically mostly mothers) staying at home looking after their children).
If you did not take CSI during times of self-sufficiency or whilst studying, then these years do not count towards your residency time.

This means that you could be a stay-at-home dad/mom for 15 years in the UK, and will be kicked out by the time Brexit is real.

Pity the poor Brexiters – they could win yet still lose
That is the tragedy of this referendum. So much is at stake. A European alliance, decades in the making, could be undermined with no obvious economic or political benefits in exchange. And no option on the ballot paper can satisfy all the people for whom the whole destructive campaign has been arranged. The leavers may get what they vote for and still never get what they want.

This is not true iirc, but only being pedantic. These rules came into force in 2011 after T. May took over but if your residency was before that it would still count. You can claim a 5 year period that was in the past if you can provide evidence for it as long as you can also prove you didn't leave for 2 years prior to the application.

Looks like the Queen likes the European flag.

Have we worked out how much the negotiating period will cost us? I imagine it's over a few million. Would be a great story if we dint accept a deal after having spent all that money.

Guess Soft Brexit is off again? :(

Davis on Customs Union:
CU not included in transition [from Mar 2019]?
DD: I wouldn't have thought so
Straight out?
DD: would've thought so
Number 10 on this: "Leaving EU means you leave CU. she also wants to make sure there's no cliff edge..implementation depends on negotiation"
Me: Should business plan on basis that UK out of CU on 30 March 2019?
No 10: leaving EU means we must leave CU.. PM reassures no cliff edge
Mirror: leaving EU doesnt necc mean leaving CU?
No 10: it does, only available to EU
Lobby:Turkey?
No 10: leaving CU & SM, that much we know

All the same as normal but even less say in the process? Bargain!

That being bad doesn't make it better than hard exiting. Fuck, it's not like we have any good options. Even if the UK stays in somehow , it'll be decades before we get back anywhere near that level of influence and/or trust back.

Ridiculous.

Normally a correction is something along the lines of "it's in fact 500.000 tourists instead of 600.000 like we previously reported". Yet here you have them basically saying "none of it was real. we made everyting up".

I mean, we all know how shameless and blatant UK tabloids are, but it's still shocking every time you're confronted with it.

War Peaceman

You're a big guy.
It seems clear to me that news outlets forced to produce corrections should be forced to place the corrections in the corresponding location, with equivalent size. Just seems obvious.

Well according to polls remain would have won two days before the referendum too. 😝

That's not true at all. This myth that Brexit was a polling mistake has got to go. A majority of polls had leave winning. Certainly, by the day of the vote, it was basically 50/50 at best.

It's just that no-one actually thought we'd be this fucking stupid.

Britain looking to end it's fishing agreement.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-40471466

Heard Gove talking about this today. So 6-10 miles but can be extended later to 200 miles but Gove waffles on whether they'll allow other countries in on it, of course they will.

Also he was talking about free trade with America etc. will that mean lower standards for the UK. Straight out said no which sounds like a complete lie. Still want that cake Gove.

He also said farmers would get less subsidies after the EU funding disappears, straight yes.

There's nothing inherent to free trade agreements which require a homogenisation of standards. You can buy and sell pretty much anything from or to the US right now that abides by our standards, only you pay a tariff. Lowering these tariffs doesn't mean we need the same food standards.

Investment in UK car industry Plummets amid Brexit uncertainty.
https://www.ft.com/content/0c3427b2-5ce1-11e7-9bc8-8055f264aa8b?segmentid=acee4131-99c2-09d3-a635-873e61754ec6

Investment in the UK car industry has fallen to just £322m in the first half of 2017, in a sign that companies are delaying or cancelling spending ahead of the UK leaving the EU.

Investment in the UK car industry last year was £1.66bn, which was down from the £2.5bn in investment recorded in 2015, as carmakers and their suppliers delayed non-essential investment following the EU referendum last June.

But investment looks to have fallen even further in the first six months of 2017, according to figures compiled by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders industry body.

If the same levels of investment are seen in the second half of the year, it would bring total annual spend on the UK car industry to just £644m — less than half of the amount invested last year and nearly one-quarter of the amount invested two years ago.

(who could have predicted this?)

But.. isn't that normal? I mean, why should the financial institutions or other EU agencies be located outside of the EU? That would be like a new "central bank" for the EU, being located in Norway.

Seriously, that was to be expected.

Exactly. But many Brexiteers claimed we wouldn't lose jobs over Brexit, while some believed that these could be used as leverage in negotiations with the EU, presuming that they wouldn't be moved or would be too awkward to do so.

They were wrong.

American standards are lower than EU standard let's use beef as an example. UK would have to lower standards to compete with the US market as they are considerably cheaper. Lowering the standards would then disqualify them from Europe.

They could try and go the premium route but that will take years for approval and Ireland have gone the premium route so the UK have to play catch up. Even then it's selling below expectations.

I'm not sure you understood my post. My point was that you don't need to alter your standards in order to lower tariffs.

How quaint, just as the EU and Japan put the finishing touches on a new trade deal that happens to be extremely favourable towards the importation of Japanese parts.

I still wonder what does May intend to do in order to avoid the collapse of the British car industry, which was pretty much revived by Japanese manufacturers.

At this point is it safe to say that the government spun Nissan a load of bullshit with their assurances?

No... they may also have secretly paid them off, in a way that's quite possibly illegal under European State Aid and WTO rules if anyone knew about it.
