Trump talks tough on NAFTA for eleven hours and then backs down.

Even though Trudeau used to be a schoolteacher, teaching Donald about anything couldn't have been easy.

Threatening to withdraw from NAFTA isn't a necessary requirement for renegotiation. It's just hostile and dumb.

yeah i agree with this, i think it was stupid

Trump voters you tired yet from all this winning? In 100 days, all he has done is roll back environmental regulations, net neutrality, cut corporate taxes and appoint his wall street and goldman sachs executive friends into high places.

It was on the table before his threats in the past 24 hours though...

well i admit that i haven't been following the events leading up to this very closely, just going off what im reading in this thread, and some of the previous one.

i don't think he was right to threaten to drop the deal, because I think that would be to the detriment of all parties involved (and because he has no idea what he is talking about)

Must have spoken with someone for ten minutes an hour before his last statement.

Today has been a hell of a day. Honestly anyone who followed political twittersphere would think the administration and congress was running around with their fucking hair on fire.

Mind you we avoided a shutdown too for a week.

So... it's basically this in political form:

What seriously happened was that Trump had already set up the appts to talk with these two leaders today to talk about whatever. Everything else is for show.

Do you have a source for this? It isn't on the White House schedule that was released in the morning.

Though most will portray this as a L for Trump, neither Trudeau nor Nieto really wanted to reopen the NAFTA. Trump's hardball threats actually worked in this specific case.

That's how Trump does it. 12 hours of badmouthing and big talk. Then he walks up and tries to bully, and immediately backs down when you try to touch his hands. As if to shake them in greeting or agreement.

Then the moment you turn your back, he's on you like a bitch. He doesn't even wait for it. Moving, grabbing motions, cat endangerment. Its his M.O.

the man is a menace.

How? What did he gain besides looking like a little bitch and getting U.S coal banned from British Columbia?

True, but the threat wasn't needed, both Mexico and Canada were ready to renegotiate in the first place, the threat just added unnecessary chaos.

It appears to be a pattern that repeatedly plays out.

Step 1; take the most radical, populist (to his base) position you can. Build a wall and have Mexico pay for it. Repeal Obamacare. Ban Muslims from entering the USA. Label China a currency manipulator. Tear up NAFTA.

Step 2; reality sets in. Mexico isn't paying for the wall. There isn't a replacement bill for Obamacare that will pass. China won't float the yuan. Banning Muslims is unconstitutional. Leaving NAFTA hurts the US economy.

Step 3; make some sort of half hearted face saving gesture. Mexico will pay at some point somehow maybe we'll give more money to border patrols. Maybe we'll take another swing at this AHCA later, once we figure out some other stuff. China isn't a currency manipulator anymore because I'm so tough with them. We'll take the Muslim ban to the Supreme Court one day. We'll just renegotiate NAFTA I guess.

The unfortunate side effect of all this (or fortunate depending on your perspective) is that once you go nuclear out of the gate and you have to moderate you really don't do your negotiating stance any favours.

Leverage. He's actually willing to screw his own country over by shutting it down anytime, meaning he can use that in negotiation if things don't go his way because both Canada and Mexico want to avoid an outright repudiation at all costs

Source saying there was going to be a phone meeting today? Nope. Mind you that Mexico has been prepared to begin talks on renegotiating NAFTA, it's not new.

....

He's just signaled such an action is a negotiating bluff though.

Guys you don't understand. If you want Mexico to pay for the wall you have to give in on other deals. It's all part of the master plan.

At least he apparently listens to people who know what they're talking about

Only after repeatedly embarrassing the country on the global stage with emotional, frequently xenophobic outbursts and exposing himself as a know-nothing child. He's that quarterback who blows kisses to the crowd after his first touchdown in a 49-7 blowout.

Yeah. And just willynilly making wild innuendo on issues that would impact hundreds of millions of lives isn't an acceptable strategy in a liberal democracy. People gotta make decisions about their damn lives and they need reliable information from the government in order to make those decisions.

This one is "ok" because it only went a day. But if Trump was hanging threats to upturn decades of law out in the air for days or weeks, lots of people would actually have to panic and work on trying to figure out how to restructure their businesses and shit. Anyone planning to retire soon gotta thinking seriously about liquidating everything to dodge a market crash.

Trump has so much casual disdain for Americans it's really astounding anybody voted for him. Whoever you are, Trump obviously hates you or at best doesn't give a shit about you.

What an idiot. Like, he does realize both Mexico and Canada would have been fine sitting down and renegotiating NAFTA, right? All this dick waving will do is put off any countries that wan't to sign trade agreements in the future. What's the point if the president can threaten to shut it down to get what they want?

Not to mention, if you're going to threaten to pull out of a big trade deal, but have no intention to actually do it, maybe you should do that in a meeting behind closed doors. All bringing it up to the public will do is freak people out. But that wouldn't look good to his supporters, so you can't do that. NOOOOOOOOOOO, why act like a god damn president if you can brag about all the good deals you do.

A bluff this time. Maybe.

Or maybe he really did have a ten minute conversation and learn it's not so easy? You willing to bet any stakes on that?

Ten minute conversation is going to hit critical mass as a meme in the near future isn't it?
