September 2009 NPD Article (Gamasutra)

jvm

Gamasutra.
Sorry this is late. Sometime this morning while I was away Gamasutra put up my column on the September 2009 videogame retail data released by the NPD Group. Here you go:
Direct link to Gamasutra story about September 2009 NPD data.
A few things of interest perhaps:
  • An overview of the RB and GH sales picture, both for Sep 2009 and YTD 2009
  • HW ASP for PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii in Sep 2009. (See note below.)
  • YTD and LTD SW figures for PS3, Wii, and Xbox 360
  • How much might DLC add to a game's effective ASP?
The NPD Group was extremely helpful in making this month's column come together. Also, you'll see that Jesse chips in with the last section.

A picture for fun:

NOTE:
Because some have asked about the Wii HW ASP, let me comment as best I can. The ASP prior to Sep 2009 was not always $250, even though there was only one configuration. Without getting too specific, the ASP did not drop as much as you might think from Aug 2009 to Sep 2009.

In short, I think it would be unwise to extrapolate too much from the Wii ASP for the past month, given what I know about Aug 2009 Wii ASP. That's why I didn't try. There are effects I can't take into account when doing the "how many systems sold at what price" dance, and this is one time when I felt it better not to try.

As always, I'm up for corrections, comments, etc. Please don't take a lack of immediate response personally -- I may simply not be here. My overlordseditors will probably be watching the thread, so changes may happen without a direct response from me.

Thanks, as always, guys.

I wonder what caused Wii software to stagnate despite there being a lot more hardware out there now.
2008 had Wii Fit, Mario Kart, Brawl, Wii Music, and Animal Crossing.
2009 is just a shadow of the previous year so far.

2009 wipes the floor with 2008 imo. Obviously nothing as big as MK or Brawl has come out, but the overall selection is much, much better this year.

Any chance of getting that nice rainbow looking chart of 2007/8/9 industry sales broken down in to colored months? :)

Which is likely why its managed to stagnate rather than retreat heavily with such a lack of huge titles to be honest.

That's the one, thanks! I've been watching it over the year, and didn't notice it this month. Color palette is perfect, very Diablo 3-ish.

Wii Fit Plus is a near shoe-in for #1 in October, and Wii Sports Resort might qualify as a big release by Nintendo this year.
You may be right. I don't always get everything into the articles, and I overlook things.

I had wanted to write about the PSPgo but I hit 3000 words and six pages and it seemed I best stop. Oh, and it was 3AM.

I'm surprised 2009 was able to keep up with 2008 considering the lack of megahuge releases for the system. Wii Sports Resort is about as close as it gets. Wii Fit Plus may not fucking bomb and NSMB Wii could be a huge seller, but last year was pretty huge.

The quality of the Wii's lineup has improved dramatically- I agree with you on that. 2008 was its worst year and 2009 is undoubtedly its best.
