Crytek employee accurately answers interview question; gets shat on for no reason

Is this man serious or what? This is why PC gamers are very dangerous to gaming.

PS4 already has more DDR5 than even $1000 graphics for PC and it only costs $400 in United States. Why is he asking Sony to do more, how can he not be grateful? Sony have given us everything we could ask for for a cheap price (top end PC hardware and above PC graphics on Sony exclusives) and PC gamers like him want to destroy that so that only the rich will be able to afford this activity. If we continue this way, gaming as a hobby will be equivalent to yachting.

It's funny people are giving Crytek shit for that old thread when it's likely they had a lot to do with the current consoles having 8GB of RAM.

I thought we were laughing at the reaction to their claim in that thread, but apparently not.

Wasn't at least one of the new consoles pushed by game developers to 8GB RAM quite close to the reveal?

Game devs want more memory?! WELL I NEVER!

If you give a game dev 128GB they would still be able to use all of it. However you have to ask how efficiently they are using it then.

In not trying to play the PC master race card here, but it's relevant to point out that most people in the PC building thread still suggest people only build PCs with 8gb.

I'm out.

It's not like Crysis 4 or whatever they're working on will be any less bland with more ram and 8K resolution. Ram or any other component with fixed amount is one day gonna become a limiting factor, I dunno why this suddenly is news. 512MB was holding down last gen in it's last years, this was very apparent.

I'm talking about the people saying Crytek's still complaining despite getting what they wanted, or something to that effect. Crytek did say "minimum," and it's likely that the current consoles wouldn't have 8GB of RAM without developers like them that "say the dumbest things."

Well you do have more ram free on PC at 8 gigs than you do both consoles. Unless you have a lot of stuff running in the background hogging it up. So anything that can run on either console should be good on a PC with the same amount of ram.

For this gen, going with 8 was the right move for both companies. Especially with 3 locked away for OS and other tasks.

They've said they wanted 64 gb of ram in the past. They are nuts.

If games are even that big...

But if they are, it wouldn't be that hard to quickly fill up 16GB or 32GB worth of assets. Your system just keeps using free blocks until it's full.

Then paging kicks. If you have 32GB of RAM most of it's memory blocks are probably relatively idle. The more memory you have the slower RAM performs unless the implementing technology is improved with speed to offset.

Really with caching and paging I don't see 64GB being that much of an improvement from 16GB. Depending on the PS4 hardware 16GB might not have even offered much in terms of improvement over 8GB. They unified memory in the PS4 will really offer some amazing memory management solutions late-gen. But I just don't see it ever being as optimized as what will be possible on PC's or the Xbone. Once the foundations are laid for faster and faster caching, that 8GB DDR3 is going to feel a bit bigger on the One, compared to the unified GDDR5.

Current tech will always be a limiting factor if you want to make a large scale project. Better start learning to work with what you have in hand, Crytek.

I can't breathe.

Anyways, they asked for 8GB minimum RAM and they still don't have that. I don't really play Crytek games but nothing really seems contradictory here.

Thank god sony went with 8gb even if it is proving that it´s not enough.
However, I think we will get some crazy looking games this gen, looking back at how impressive The last of us was, I have faith!

It can easily be filled up when you haven't released a well-optimized game in a decade.

Crysis 2 and 3 were very well optimized on PC, what are you talking about?

So. To the people who claim Crytek is horrible at optimization, do you own a gaming-viable PC, or are you all just talking out of your ass?

Sounds like Crytek will make shit console ports for PS4/XB1 in the future regardless of specs available to them and are just lowering the expectations so they dont get much flak when they release their shit "limited by hardware" games.

No Crytek, the limiting factor is you in this care. Im sure ND/SSM will beat any technical feats you can do easily without spewing such BS.

How so? People in that thread are talking about GDDR5 RAM. Since 8GB DDR3 RAM would be dumb gaming wise as demonstrated by the xbox one. It is good non-gaming purposes, which is what MS was going for.

Sony made a bet a by going 8GB GDDR5 it was unclear that 8GB GDDR5 at the time whether it would be doable on a consumer level. It was even unclear for MS, otherwise they would have opted for it as well. Since MS is now stuck with a harder to code for, more expensive and slower solution (for most purposes of the consoles).

You can talk all cool in hindsight, but a lot of the predictions where based on logic.

Crytek's problem is that instead of focusing on "what I can do with what I have.", they focus on "What I could do if I had more."

Right, because that's 8 GB of system RAM and another 2-4 GB of VRAM on the video card. Besides which, the memory footprint of Win7/8 is just a fraction of the size of the OS Reserved block in the next-gen consoles.

Very true, Nintendo has like the complete opposite philosophy, and they keep amazing me with their incredible art style.

Developing for multiple platforms is a bit more challenging than developing for one.

We've seen what Crytek can do when developing for just one(Crysis, Ryse) and the results are impressive.

I *seriously* don't understand why people are criticizing them here for anything.

We're expecting a more modest resolution bump this time, we still got 16x the memory again and no split pools. I'm not worried.

Well yeah, you'd hit a limit with a thousand terabytes of RAM eventually too. Doesn't stop 8GB from being an enormous leap over what we had last-gen.
