Tales of Zestiria Tokyo Game Show story trailer (+pre-order Mystic Artes)

Too expensive. They'll keep doing localizations of what exists. Should one do really bad they'll likely become picky with future localizations again. Tales going PS4 anytime soon is far from a given looking at its sales in Japan, the handheld bridges are all burned and Wii U is equally unlikely at this point even though surpassing PS4 plenty, that leaves only PS3 for the time being.

No one's saying drop the PS3 version of Zestiria at this point. But it may not be too expensive to do cross-gen like Atlus. Then they'll move to PS4 exclusively for the next one since that will presumably be after FF comes out.

I say this is hella rushed because despite all the footage we've seen of the game, it's very very minimal stuff. I understand that normally we get a October-December release of the game and it's unorthodox that this is coming out in January but even then we've seen more stuff come out. Granted you can make the argument that it's far out so they're hiding. My guess isn't that they're hiding it. My guess is that there were some problems when designing the game and they are cherry picking what they are showing. This trailer showed way less about the game than any of the previous trailers that preceded it.

I have a gut feeling that this game will feel more gutten than Xillia 1 did. Also, the fact that we haven't seen any good screenshots or videos of their landscapes worries me as well. For some reason, this game screams development trouble.

I now await for Dat and rpg to prove me wrong.

Zestiria won't sell worse than Xillia 2. I promise you.

I think he means the localized version in US/Europe, feeling Namco should realize that a good number of the niche western players, even those who might buy it on PS4, are pretty much done buying last gen games and have their PS4s. Even in the various Zestiria threads just on here there are plenty of "yeah, I'd buy it on PS4, but I'm pretty much done with my PS3" posts.

I'll be buying it either way though. Looking forward to it.

The localized Zesti will still sell better than Xillia 2.

They've shown a lot of gameplay in scans. They've also shown battle and field gameplay during the monthly streams they've started a few months ago. There's a little over 4 months till release and they're going to have more streams to showcase more gameplay.

I don't see the issue with a story trailer for TGS; I think you're looking into it too much.

TGS gameplay demo. It's not youtube so I am not sure if the player works well from those who are not in Korea.

And now you reminded me that Zestiria is playable at TGS. So yeah...story trailer + the game is playable on the showfloor.

Yes, they will wait for an FF first before moving to PS4. But what makes you sure that FF will be already out before the next Tales is due? =D

There was only a year between Xillia and Xillia 2 in Japan for obvious reasons, so it'll probably take around a year and a half to two for the next fully new game after Zestiria, unless they were to make a sequel again, right?

With Zestiria not coming out until early 2015 presumably it'll probably be 2016-2017 for the next game. One would hope the next FF is out before 2017 lol...then again S-E... :D

I actually don't think it's dissimilar to e.g. the Graces reveal. The environments may end up in a similar way as well, some rather well done epic landscapes, with plenty others turning out to be the usual low budget mazes (just in Zestiria's case they may fall back to the Xillia canyons instead). So in the end I expect it to feel like a traditional Tales game, been there done that.

unless they were to make a sequel again, right?
They have done a director's cut/expansion/sequel of every single console Tales game after Abyss, why would they stop now?

My assumption (hope) is that they're just taking things slow because it's coming out later than usual for a Tales game.

I'm quite sure they're putting their best foot forward in all the screenshots and videos though and the final game is going to have a number of areas that look cheaply made or straight-up ugly. They have a habit of doing that with one-off areas like dungeons.

Nowadays they release an all-new game, spend a year or two on lower budget filler projects (Graces f, Xillia 2, Symphonia HD) so the next game can get more time, then release the next game.

So the earliest scenario I would expect is Zestiria for this winter, Zestiria DC/2/PS4 for winter 2015, and the next Tales for Fall/Winter 2016. It might extend into being a Fall/Winter 2017 release though and they'd fill in the gap with another HD port or something.

I gotta admit it's pretty slick how you jump right from cutscenes to battles. I want to say the battles look pretty smooth but somehow Namco usually manages to avoid showing any noticeable technical flaws in combat until the game has actually released and people have already bought it, lol

That's about the timeline I figured for the next new Tales series.

Yes, you guys are right, I totally skipped over the likely inbetween game which could likely be cross-gen when I said next game.

The camera seems more flexible. The end of the cutscene and the battle camera represent the same scene.

Rose is kind of interesting. I like Edna more, though. She's my favourite character. But she does look kind of cute in the anime pictures. Much cuter than in the CG.

Edna is my favourite character. And I think Miclio is my second favourite character.

And that new trailer has me so excited. I can't wait to pre-order the Japanese version.

That combat looks fun! I don't really like combat or violence in video games. But the combat system in Tales is my favourite in all RPGs. And Tales of Zestiria looks like the best one yet.

Being able to have that pretty field in the background sounds like so much fun. There's trees and rocks and grass everywhere.

Oh, and I asked Hideo Baba if, inspired by Persona 5’s recent jump from PS3 to PS4, he was considering a similar move. He noted that while the western market for Tales is important, Japan is still its most important territory, and Japanese fans have no issues playing it on PS3. With that said, he admitted that he was surprised how quickly western audiences have taken to next-gen hardware, and that they may have to reconsider their approach in the future. Does that mean that there will one day be a PS4 iteration of Tales of Zestiria? Not necessarily, but it does mean that it’s on the series’ producer’s mind.

PS4 version still possible!

I think a ps4 version has always been likely, but a day one version of it never was. What will likely happen is a year after release they will announce the ps4 port with new content (see vesperia from 360 to ps3 or graces from wii to ps3)

the ps4 doesn't have a lot of traction in japan yet, though ff type 0, persona 4 and ff15 likely won't hurt with that next year.

Ok apparently Mikleo's mystic arte was used in a video? Someone on gamefaqs has the name and I don't remember it being shown in any scans.

Please, please go back to cell shading. Somehow everything from Xillia onwards have started looking worse and worse with each new iteration. How is this even possible?

...on the other hand those battles look fun. Too bad the trailer also reminded me of the weird people fusion thing.

I love that 1-2 sec loading time and "open field" battle area.
The loading time into the arena battle area were the downfall of Tales gameplay.
I hate grinding in Tales because of that pause/wait, but ToZ looks like it will not be the case.

And after ToX2, I am so glad we are going back to traditional mainsword hero.
Those movesets are always the best.

The daum.net video also shows Alisha's mystic arte being used.

Added to OP post about some of the latest updates. Thanks guys. Keep them coming.

The person playing scrolled through each character's move list. Alisha's is a throwback to a mystic arte from Rebirth, but I don't know if any of these have English names.

Sorey - Raijinsouhyouga (or something like that, going off what I can see in the video and not anything official)
Alisha - Shouha Rekkousen
Mikleo - Clearest Rod
Edna - Venerate Mine
Lilah - Enburengekiha
Dezel - Brutality Whip

Loading times in Tales hasn't been an issue for a while now; they're some of the fastest JRPGs on the market. Zestiria seems the fastest yet though, which is cool.

The battles look great. On Sorey's moveset, they seem a bit similar to Asbel's than strictly traditional. But I'm definitely liking the moveset; the attacks flow smoothly.

The framerate in battles is also good, and the field map is rather large and looks nice. We're gone from Xillia's canyons now.

Shouha Rekkousen is Light Blast. It was Light Spear Cannon's FOF change in Wind.

I hope people go out of their way to record the mystic artes...

Someone on GameFAQs pointed out that after Alisha uses her Mystic Arte, her own Blast Gauge drops. It seems like we're going back to individual MA's, none of that shared gauge bullshit.

Yup, Asbel is best-tier swordplay, then again, Grace f has the best battlesystem from my experience of playing the Tales series.
All of Asbel attacks connected and flow smoothly in Grace.
And we can see Sorey using some of the teleport and ground-AOE type of attack.

Was right on the money! Gameplay looks great :). Any confirmations if Rose is playable or not?
There is an image in the latest famitsu where she is wearing a costume. That probably means that she is playable. But no official conformation yet.

I will watch the gameply videos later. Currently at work.

With all the gameplay videos popping up now, anybody seen a player change the camera setting in battle? I saw some occasional use of the menu (which also points out the shortcuts for focus and zoom), but so far everybody stuck to the default close up camera. =/

Phew, my LaLaBit Market Limited Edition has been confirmed preordered :p

At first the, well, limited nature of this edition freaked me out a little bit but I'm all set now <3 Just have to wait for the release date now.

Only problem...it will arrive a few days after the 22nd, and a few days after it's in my hands...Bloodborne is going to be released...
Man it's going to be tough :(

Here's some more gameplay footage.

Gameplay Demo

Story Demo

I watched that combat video, and yeah it seems like Mystic Artes (they ain't called Blast Calibers anymore?) are tied to individual gauges.

Also the player brought up the Artes screen, starting at 4:44. It seems there's 5 spots for Artes now (back, forward, left, right, neutral) as opposed to 4 spots (going off Graces f's scheme, forward/back, left, right, neutral). However the neutral spot has some Japanese text in blue bound in brackets whereas the others are in white text, so if someone could translate that that would be great (unless you guys have already talked about this). Also I think the other four tabs correspond to the four elemental kamui modes, so each different fusion has their own Artes configuration.

Alisha doesn't seem to have a kamui mode, at least her Artes screen doesn't show any extra configurable Artes tabs, but that just might be because of story reasons. If Alisha doesn't get them, Roze probably won't either.

Finally watched the gameplay videos. I really like the seamless transitions between battles and cut scenes with almost no loading times. Looks very smooth.

The combat is similar to Graces battle system which is a good thing; it's my favourite battle system in the series. I have no doubts that I will love this too. The new monster designs are cool, especially that spider woman was kind of creepy.

And it seems the Discovery Points from Graces are back. That was a nice idea in Graces and I'm glad it's back. The fields are a huge improvement to Xillias canyon fields. There are still pop ups but I think they aren't as bad as in Xillia?

On a side note, the IGN article mentions some official english terms. The divine are called Seraphs and the kamui mode is Armitization.
