Pachter Predicts: Xbox One outsold PS4 in September (dance, you puppets)

I believe two things:

- People on the sales prediction threads are, in general, way under-predicting the Xbox One's performance in September.
- Pachter is way off base, regardless.
I predicted 328k for the One! At least I still have PS4 on top.

Sony mention 1 week sales for Destiny.
What a week! Since Destiny launched one week ago, it has officially become the biggest PS4 game launch in North America ever. The game broke records for being the fastest purchased and most played PS4 game during its first week on sale. In fact, last week was our single biggest PS4 hardware sales week since Christmas 2013! That’s a lot of PS4s. Thanks, Guardians!

My guess would be that Xbox One sales were weighted towards brick and mortar retailers, where Pachter's contacts are.

Why would Xbox One sales skew more towards B&M retailers?
I'm not saying they don't, I would just like to hear the reasoning. I can't think of a reason, one way or another.

i herd from a friend of a co-workers husband who works at gamestop had a few people coming to buy PS4s but then when he told them the xb1 has had like five os updates in the time that the ps4 has had zero firmware updates they got real mad stormed out then walked right back in and bought xbones. phil spencer effect

Xbox, show me why I chose you.

What is is reasoning for that? Destiny was a huge push for PS4 sales and there was nothing major to push for XBO that month.

There was Forza Horizon 2 and Destiny was a multi-plat title. Also, Madden 15 was released in the US just before the end of August. I think his reasoning is just that people could get a Destiny/Madden + XB1 bundle for $50 cheaper than an equivalent PS4 bundle, and as we all know, price sells. I think Destiny was a huge push for both consoles, and MS tried hard to capitalize on Destiny's hype in spite of being unable to co-market it. I don't know if he's right or not, but the logic isn't entirely unsound.

Looks like the general public has finally caught wind of the Xbone's excellent UI and stable online infrastructure. Good for them.

Now they can play with the pretty UI and the worse version of all multiplats.

Good for them.

The relevant distinction isn't how large Amazon is relative to the market, but how representative its sample is of the overall population.
But when has it ever been a very good barometer for sales? Just because it also has something at a top place selling doesn't mean the rest of the market falls in-line or vice-versa...especially when there are direct marketing efforts that the brick 'n mortar retailer group makes in the Autumn and holiday season that Amazon doesn't.

At my local target, PS4 has been MIA for a while now while the glass case is filled with Xbones. They could be on multiple replenishments of the Xbone though while the PS4 hasn't been restocked since selling out.

Um, yeah. XB1 may have hit an inflection point in September, but to actually have surpassed the PS4 would be shocking. Maybe NPD threads will be worth reading again.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

Or the PS4 is getting restocked and sold. The possibilities are endless.

It's comments like these that make me just roll my eyes when people quote his predictions.

Even with the Xbox one promotion Destiny week the PS4 bundle outsold the X1 3 to 1 in my store (my store generally has more xbox customers overall) I would be absolutely shocked if X1 somehow pulled ahead, its very unlikely.

If I know anything it's that people love software updates.

Can someone with the latest breakdowns say what place Amazon ranks in NA for retail/physical video game sales? I don't remember it even being in the top five when there was a retailer ranking.

iirc they are like 5% can't remember completely but Aqua gave a great breakdown before. Just so you know it doesn't matter much because Amazon hasn't been wrong once in terms of hardware positions even the month XB1 won (December 2013) it was reflected in the charts.

No way with the Destiny bundle.

I'm also pretty sure that Sony said they sold the most PS4s in Destiny's launch week, then they ever have since Xmas of last year.
as I was corrected in the other thread. that isn't corrsct

try deciphering the quote

"In fact, last week was our single biggest PS4 hardware sales week since Christmas 2013! That’s a lot of PS4s. Thanks, Guardians!"

it was the best week of this new year basically.

I believe we had reports from our resident Best Buy guy in the NPD predictions thread that White PS4 bundle elevated the PS4 to a point where it's selling extremely well and while Xbone is also selling well it's not selling -as- well as PS4.

Pachter seems way off here (again) to me.

Yeah but Best Buy is not exactly the market leader in much of anything anymore.

I am reminded of Pachter's spot-on prediction for FUSE selling 5 million copies.

Kinda disingenuous of you to use that to mock him and not include his entire prediction. He based the sales numbers on whether or not the metacritic average hit a certain number, which it obviously didn't come close to doing.

I don't see any reason why this would be the case. Destiny had Sony exclusive marketing and no major exclusive released was released on XB1 except for Forza Horizon 2 which came out at the very end of the month so the impact it had for this month is probably minimal.

The deals are nice and all, but I don't see them being enough to push XB1 ahead for the month.

Exactly, so the argument should run through how the Amazon sample is not representative, not how large it is relative to other retailers -- the sample size is large enough to be more than enough statistically -- IF (and it's a big if) it's representative.

I don't think it is, so we always need to be careful with Amazon data, and use it relative to how the real numbers turned out compared to previous months, to try and account for the bias in the sampling.

Also worth keeping in mind that by and large the Xbox One deals were better outside of Amazon for a while in September.

Don't believe it at all.

I mean, I know the Xbox One sale did very well (seen evidence first hand and talked to reps; the store was packed with many people getting an Xbox One Madden bundle & Destiny) but I can't see the system doing better than the PS4.

Maybe I am underestimating the Xbox One sales for September but still -- I can't see how the system could have done better than the PS4 last month.

Inb4: We don't use Amazon to indicate sales.
Wait? What? When did that happen?

I can understand not wanting to tie actual numbers based on Amazon data, but that is pretty lopsided in PS4's favor for it to go entirely the other way. In other words, why would a Pacher prediction be worthy of a new thread, but contradicting info from a major seller not even warrant a post?

As much as I suspect he's completely off-base, I sort of hope Pachter is right on the money on this one because Sony needs a kick in their complacent ass right about now.

I personally witnessed a friend telling me that no less then six people returned their white ps4 destiny bundles and picked up an Xbox when they heard that the Xbox DLNA update was coming in October.

I'm not saying they don't, I would just like to hear the reasoning. I can't think of a reason, one way or another.

Most of the big deals on the console were in-store. Just a hypothesis based on conjecture.

Right, but looking at Best Buy and Amazon does help paint a picture of the overall trend. I'd be shocked if Xbone actually managed to outsell PS4 with that White Destiny bundle doing notably well.

This isn't the first I've heard of this, I had heard elsewhere that Microsoft sold more in September. Cant be 100%, but possibly from Metro.

Either way, I'd be very surprised if true.

Well since we're all throwing around anecdotal evidence, I spend a lot of time at my local Gamestop, and during my time there I saw two Xbox Ones and two Wii Us sold, and no PS4s

WHAT DOES THAT TELL YOU?

beeteedubs this is a true story

Yeah, it's a good point -- I added it to my post above myself after recalling some of the deals we saw this month :)

Irrelevant -- the question is whether or not Best Buy shoppers are a representative sample of the market.

Yeah that's what's really baffling. Supposedly he does his own retail checks, so what stores was he checking before making this prediction?? Xbone vastly outsold the PS4 10 to 1 at Walmart or something?

provides useful feedback
vgc says:
ps4 = 346k
xone = 206k

maybe pachter mixed-up something?
