Gundam Reconguista in G |OT| Return of the 80s, All Hail the King

It wasn't bad, but there were definitely some issues with it, especially regarding pacing and character motivations. Up until Towasanga I was able to follow along pretty easily, but then multiple pointless factions and plot threads were introduced and abandoned that really made me feel like they became aware that this would only be 26 episodes and there wasn't enough time for delving into Towasanga and Venus Globe. Like how, when they left Venus Globe, they recruited and brought along three nameless soldiers, who really served no purpose aside from causing Bell to go a bit berserk later on.

Character motivations and actions were understandable, but never really had any sort of proper backing or reasoning. Luin, for example, was pretty friendly with Bell in the first few episodes despite him being a grade-skipper, but there never really was a pivotal event (like Lalah with Amuro and Char) that turned their mobile suit rivalry into outright hatred. The show explains why he's mad, but never properly showed how he got to that point. This happens with a lot of other characters too, like Ringo's sudden infatuation with Raraiya.

Honestly, I think if this had more episodes and properly fleshed out character motivations it could have been better. I still enjoyed it regardless.

A documentary with no narrator XD

I think if there is a narrator this show could be 10x better. Why couldn't they just spare the first 2 mins of the show for recap or to simply explain each fraction and their motive? And maybe 1 filler episode for some backgrounds like Kuntala history or SU-Cord religion or something.

Any place I can watch this show with English subs? I watched the first four eps on youtube through Gundaminfo channel but I need to watch the rest! PM's would be ok if not allowed here.

Oh, another thing - the finale makes it really obvious that Tomino never intended this to be part of the UC Gundam franchise. While he occasionally name drops UC stuff there's very effort made to tie the story back into the themes, ideas and timeline of UC.

It basically feels just like a standalone mecha show.

Out of the entire series, this last episode is the only one that actually confused me for real.

Other than that I liked it. Gonna miss hand-drawn mechs every week ;_;
It looked fucking great though. The whole show did! And the music was incredible! And the character designs I really liked too.

I wanted Manny to die.

All those people expecting some kind of Turn A/Turn X connection at the end are probably pretty disappointed.

I was thinking about this as I watched episodes. I'll admit what crossed my mind a few times (and this could be because I'm rewatching it to a degree) was "The Robotech narrator, annoy as he was, would be really helpful right about now.".

On the Turn A front that one move Bellri did at the end had me thinking of moonlight butterfly. All these different attacks started being used and for a few seconds there I was wondering if that attack was going to be accidentally triggered.

I can't believe even in the last 10 seconds I was fully expecting to see a heavily damaged turn x (like an arm) floating in space. Oh well.

On the one hand, I never hated the show. Sometimes I thought it was fun, and most of the time I was just kinda eh I don't mind it.

Other the other hand, this is probably the worst written Gundam production ever. The writing isn't so much bad as it is wrong, as if it was done by someone who has absolutely no idea how to write and doesn't have a clue about what the hell story structure is.

Compare this to other bad Gundams like 0083, AGE or Destiny, which tried something and worked toward a certain kind of storytelling or theme or message but, for their own reasons, ended up failing. I can't say Reconguista tried and failed like they did because I have no idea what the fuck it was trying to do in the first place. Plot progression was complete gibberish, character development was either incoherent or non-existent, no sense of story stakes or resolution or anything really. There's no beginning, middle, and end; it's just a pile of names and fights tossed into a blender and then thrown up on screen as is. Total nonsense.

Oh and the Jaburo nod was fun, until you remember that Jaburo was blown up by a nuke back in Zeta so it really shouldn't still be there, but oh well.

Aaaaah, I can't believe this is over...

This was such a crazy and yet enjoyable ride! The plot was a mess, a lot of things didn't make any sense, but it was more charming that a lot of shows I've watched before!

Ok ill say it....This was the worst modern gundam show thus far.

Beyond the stylized art, the plot and characters are nonsensical.

I still cant tell you the motivations for why everyone does what they do. It just seems like alot happened and then it ended out of nowhere.

Maybe a better translation will help change my opinion but the writing and dialogue seemed to be a mush of words with people not having conversation rather than just blurting out lines.

So I shouldn't watch it?

I've having a really really really really really hard time believing this could possibly worse than 00.

SEED Destiny made more sense than Reconguista. But even so, Reconguista had likeable characters and probably the best battle scenes in any Gundam show. I think the ending sealed the deal of it getting a sequel, but I'd like to see another show set in the reguild century.. maybe hundreds of years later.

As far as if you should watch it or not, it depends on if you need an ending to be good for you to enjoy a show.

Because the ending was garbage, but the journey to get there was a highly enjoyable one. I would personally rank it as the best Gundam of the 21st century (not that it's had a lot of competition in that regard). But man, that ending.

I didn't hate it, but 1) I really wish it had connected to Turn A and 2) I find myself wondering what the whole point of the conflict was in the end. It's the first time a UC connected Gundam's conflict has left me scratching my head. Except maybe Stardust Memory. I mean, Victory's conflict was really, really dumb but I could follow the basic idea I guess.

Here I'm just not sure what happened from the time we left Towasanga onward.

I liked the show a lot, actually. There were messages hidden here and there pertinent to the present and I get some of the things Tomino was trying to say. Of course there was a lot of things just said out of the blue and the show felt very compressed. I still chalk this up to a "things happened off screen between episodes" approach. It's a realistic approach, but probably unneeded in a show like Gundam.

Bellri and Luin's rivalry wasn't really developed well. Luin just started spouting stuff as his alter ego. I still think the mask did funny things to his personality. He really had no reason to truly believe Bellri would fall into some sort of preset (one Luin invented for him) that would lead to another Kuntala event. If he really wanted to stop that sort of thing he should have looked at his own higher ups.

As expected there were no massive amounts of deaths (outside of grunts). Cumpa got a fitting "oops" death. Really, the guy was just weaponizing the Earth for shits and giggles. Manny's dedication to Luin knows no bounds. In the end, Bellri was a free spirit and fun loving guy. Unlike a lot of Gundam shows, he retains that and doesn't end up broken by the events of the series. A Tomino Gundam with a much more positive outcome. I never expected a Turn A connection. I've never been on the side that Turn A is connected to the UC. It was an ending that needed no questions answered because there simply weren't any questions. lol

I leave the show with only one lingering question...

Why the fuck was Flamina so short?! Did I entirely miss that she was a little person?

She is mutant like La Gu, that why she look forward to G-IT's Reconguista

I swear she looked average in height before. She even does in the ED. Oh, I get, she was wearing something on her legs/feet that made her look like she was of an average height.

Ha, I love it.

Tomino back in August before the show started:

“Preexisting fans of Gundam won’t be able to understand it…I’m not making this for you, so please show it to your children and grandchildren, instead.”

And now

But the people I'd most want to see it probably didn't. That's the guys in the Cabinet, the nuclear energy guys. And I don't expect them to.

This is the only show I know of that was made for kids, politicians and nuclear energy guys.

They gotta bring in an actual writer, only way to save this mess, Tomino is terrible at it. If it's just Tomino doing his thing again, I don't see it being any different. Shame really, the series had some nice designs and animation, it's just the story that failed the series.
