Polyphony Digital (Gran Turismo) hires Mike Caviezel (Forza audio lead)

Haven't played any racing game on my PS4 yet, waiting on Project CARS, but from last gen my favorite racing game was Forza 4, by far. Gran Turismo 6 was good, but it didn't blow me away. Now I'm really hyped up!

People are making good points about Evolution Studios. Would have been nice to see PD pick up some of those folks.

Thats the least they can do if we're not going to get a new Motorstorm :(

People are talking about those that were laid off, but the audio people from Evo still seem to be employed there.

Oh i had GT5, didn't notice anything wrong with the car sounds... then again i game on a home theater so maybe that has something to do with me not noticing it.

I found they sounded worse the more speakers and oomph you threw at it, well that's from my own Home Theatre set up...

I don't think Forza is perfect, but I am so very happy PD have hired someone that at least knows the difference between a vacuum cleaner and a V10

Good news. But honestly they should also collaborate with Evo and use their tech for sound capture. They have done an amazing job with DC. Also they need some real good UI designers to bring GT to next gen. Its been stuck in the past.

Got that covered as well

The Lead UI Artist of Driveclub (Kevin Middelbos) already joined the studio in October:

It's mentioned earlier in this thread that the UI/UX designer for Driveclub has moved to PD as well

My only issue with the series. Hoping for an amazing GT.

The GT vs Forza thread was some of the best times on GAF btw.

Their recent moves to AES were already promising, but I guess this really cements it.
Hopefully they'll manage to really get all cars on a good note.

The only thing left now that bothers me about GT is the old car-models. Have they said they're finally going to be removing those?

Fantastic news.

Hopefully this time around they'll stop using the same tire squeals that were in the first Gran Turismo (or if they aren't, they sure sound like it).

At last check they were going to keep them. But who knows. They seem to be hiring people to directly address fan issues (audio and UI), so things may have changed. They may dump them or just bite the bullet and outsource them to be built into premium quality.

With that said, standard cars can look really good

Interesting. I was hoping Polyphony would absorb some of the Evolution talent since Driveclub turned out God-tier.

Me too. But this might be a step in the right direction.

Cars sound amazing in the GT intros though. GT5 Spec 2.0 for example.

Yeah they look good, issues were really the cock-pit view though. It's not a huge deal, i'd still buy the game, but it can ruin the immersion a bit.

Thanks for the link!

Probably not, thankfully.
Some of the oldest models may be scrapped, but they definetely have enough data to restore more recent models as shown by some of the Nissans and RUFs to keep them going on PS4.

Lol fitting....

I yearn for the days where a sim racer can get me hooked like GT3 A-Spec. Perhaps I've just moved on with my tastes.

PS3 left a lot to be desired on the audio front from what I've heard. Mostly a lack of memory resources.

One thing I find really interesting about GTA5 is that all the car sounds are synthesized in real time using physical modeling. No recorded samples. I wonder if that's something that will catch on in the industry.

Polyphony have already done this with a handful of cars in GT6, each car has a 3kb file that their new audio system processes, bits of it found in the GT6 eboot:

You know with all those new hires I wonder if that seemingly baseless rumour about it being pushed to 2017 turns out to be true.

Wait, what? GTA5? Not a typo of GT5? I've never heard anything of this. Got a link?

Now they just need to hire some gameplay designers to design a better A spec mode.
Some better environmental artists to add life to PD drab and lifeless race tracks
And someone with enough balls to stand up and say "maybe we should take the PS2 models out of the game"

Do this and I think PD will have something cool with GT7.

Its good to see them trying though. Baby steps.

Gran Turismo is one of those games that has a bunch of super obvious fixes. But they have mostly been there since the PS2 and they havent done much yet to fix them. Here is hoping GT7 is a dramatic shift for the franchise.

Why? They take bloody years to get something out because they are supposed perfectionists - yet what they release isn't perfect.

I'd prefer twice as many releases so they can have product on the market to get feedback from and iterate.

Having never owned a PS, and only played GT2 at a friend's years ago, I still agree.
Releases seem so far apart, and the fact that they released JUST before this generation started, it'll be well into year 3 or maybe even 4 of this generation before we get our first GT game. Will get two games at most this entire generation!

The improved sound sure sounds promising though, those GT videos really take the immersion out with those horrible engines.

Yep, some of the new cars already sound decent thanks to the new method that they've been using:

Yeah, but to every standard that looks like that there's 20 that still look like the autounion or those poor Pescarolo cars.

Even if they only upgraded the unique standards (something they're not doing, judging by the ones they upgraded in GT6) it still would take a lot of time.

Twist: he's only allowed to work on the game's electric cars.

Kidding aside, good on them. Driveclub is really up there in terms of sound design and options for players so far, so I hope they also cooperate with Polyphony.

I haven't played GT6 (the only GT I haven't played) so I can't comment on that, but the archaic and cumbersome UI design of GT5 was a nightmare to navigate.

So this is also great news.

Doubt it, it'll probably be a late 2016 game though. And Prologue :p.

No, they already killed endurances. Leave as it is since they won't make it more complex anyway.

Drab and lifeless, race tracks. Track asphalt, grass, trees, barriers, sandpits.
Mmmm, you mean add spectators doing stuff like in Nurb 24h?

No, leave the models they can salvage, more cars is good.

Wait, what? GTA5? Not a typo of GT5? I've never heard anything of this. Got a link?

GTA and GT6 for some cars.

The new Vision GTI SS is pretty good too.
