Driveclub PlayStation Plus Edition (Out Now)

Seems like 3/4 of the online population are a bunch of assholes. Can't overtake someone on a straightaway without them trying to ram you into the wall.

I've never played games like GT or Forza, how does the online work in those games in regards to getting rammed?

I love games like Wipeout and Burnout, but those games encouraging vehicle combat.

I played one race where the road was skinny as a model, but I also played a wider track that felt better. I notice some ramming, but it usually seems more detrimental than not.

So this game eh, i've seen all the gifs and screenshots but they don't live up to the real thing. I've just done the 'Mini adventure' race at the start, pretty sure at one point I entered a tunnel in a videogame, and exited the tunnel in real life.

Because like any skill in life it just requires a little practice to overcome those complaints.

You can't just expect to start a new game, already be a master then go from there. That's like, millennial philosophy. ;)

To be fair, I can see why some of the DLC events might be too hard for newcomers. The tour of the main game does a much better job with its learning curve.

I tried playing the game for several hours. Beautiful to look at, but I felt like the cameraman filming the back end of the race as I languished in 12th. Probably the least fun gaming experience I've had in years trying to control these cars. I take a corner slightly wrong and I am in 12th or my car flips backwards. As someone who only likes arcadey car games, I'm not willing to put time into something that I'm not having fun with until I get better. But, to be fair, I didn't like Gran Turismo when I tried that either. I like stuff like Burnout, Ridge Racer, Sonic Racing Transformed.

It is a game with a somewhat steep learning curve, and sadly it is going to turn a lot of people off. But learning the cars and tracks, then nailing all 3 stars is an incredibly rewarding experience that you're unlikely to find in a more casual pickup'n'play title.

But games are generally meant to be fun, and if you're not having any, then that's fine. I was always having fun, even while sucking at the start.

I played the game for a few hours and through all 10 Tour events in the game, so I think I can give a fair assessment now.

Pretty much concluded that this is the Killzone: Shadowfall of racing games. Ridiculously pretty, but ultimately lifeless. Style over substance.

My biggest complaint is the weather effects; they are WAY overdone and in your face. I get that they want to show off their tech, but design and aesthetic choices should never hinder game play. Even in third person mode, the whole screen is covered in haze and droplets, to the point where I cannot reliably see where I am going. This has led to many mistakes that could have been avoided. Even though I am quite experienced with racing games, it was quite difficult to even get in the top 5 position in the first few races because of this fact. I know many are gonna scream,"it's realism bro!", but it's not. It's fancy effects for the sake of effects. Simple rainfall should not feel like a hurricane. I have raced on tracks in real life in the rain and it is no where near as bad as this.

To prove the point, do you know what happened when I played my first race in dry, sunny conditions? I got first place and my time beat most of the people on my friends list.

Second complaint is the AI. After racing the drivatars in the past few Forza games, this feels like a huge step back. They never split up or make any mistakes. Just perfectly follow a line through every course, which makes them look more like a train than individually piloted cars.

Third complaint is the "dynamic difficulty" aka rubber banding. I know they say it's minimal, but I've noticed it on several occasions, one that totally took me out of the experience. I am lucky enough to have driven many of these sports and super cars in real life, so I know what they are capable of and how they should behave. I was going ~130mph and accelerating on a straightaway in a V12 Aston Zagato, when I was overtaken by a Caterham R500. Sorry, but in no universe is that possible.

There is just something off about the handling as well. There is not much of a middle ground between grip and losing control. In Forza, I can play with the cars at the limit and adjust them mid corner through throttle control and steering. This game does not provide that fine level of control and playfulness. The cars go from grip + understeer to violent snap oversteer in an instant. The lack of rewind feature is also quite disappointing. You can play amazing 90% of the race, but a single fuckup means having to start the whole even over while you get overtaken by the train of robots you fought so hard to get ahead of.

Lack of customization is a bummer too.

Overall, I just didn't have much fun and it's not just because of the difficulty. Bloodborne is my favorite game of the year, but when I fail in that, it is almost certainly because I made a mistake. But seriously, it is realistic. If I have experienced similar prohibitive views just commuting to and from work in heavy rain with my wipers at full speed, that is only going to be made worse driving at break-neck speeds in the faster cars in the game.

If you're in the chase cam, then note it is a camera - so the droplets on the lens is realistic too and is there to balance obscured view of the cockpit views as well.

In fact, you'd probably find a lot of seasoned players prefer chase over cockpit or dash views because of water build-up on the windscreen.

I'm not sure why you point to winning a dry race as evidence of it being over done, no doubt you'll fair better as a new player to the game in the dry compared to heavy rain against AI who aren't new players who are also going 'I can't seeee!'.

If you stick with it, then you'll quickly become a master in the wet too.

I mean the rest is up to you and what you feel is right for a game, but yeah the rain is realistic, apart from how bright it looks at night with the motion blur. I'd also say the spray from other cars would be improved too, with bigger plumes of spray - something that'd make visibility even harder!

Saying DC lacks indentity is silly, actually one thing that has become very clear to me its DC personality. I got so much used to the cars, i can really feel the difrences between models and ive learned to quicky adapt...and they sound so good! Visually there are moments where the game is just amazing and others not so much. Light can really change how this game looks.

I think people mean the presentation when they refer to personality and identity, rather than the gameplay. I can see where they're coming from in that regard.
 
So I played a lot of DC when it first launched. After the first month my playtime tapered off and I only really dabbled with it as new content was released (I have the season pass). Now that it's been released on +, I recently decided to pick the game up again and start working through a lot of the new tour campaigns that have released.

The game is easily now twice the game it was. All the new cars, tour modes, challenges, are amazing. I remember when the weather patch came out, I was pretty blown away by the graphics.... but holy shit, some of the environments they've set up during new tour races are absolutely breathtaking.

Oh, and the Ferrari F40.... too damn fun to drive.

If anyone is looking to join a casual club, I've got three open positions. Shoot me a PM if interested. I think the club is Lvl 16 or 17 at the moment.

First , the complain about weather effects was there from day one, Evo studio have proven that their effects are not overdone. I'm sorry but having driven myself under heavy rain , you really can't see much. The same effect applies here. The only thing that is different is that you're not used to it at this speed ( and that's why nobody drive this fast IRL ).Also there is rain , light rain and heavy rain in this game.
So yeah , driving without rain is easier than with rain ?? just like in real life , then ? i'm sorry but learn to drive in the rain ... it's definitely possible and many people are doing it. part of the experience.

Second , the Ai actually make mistakes , they won't make "that many" mistakes on legend difficulty but even then , they won't have a perfect line.
But on semi-pro or lower difficulty ? Yeah plenty of mistakes during races.

Third, there is no rubberbanding in the game , again this has been discussed to the death , and we even had confirmation from the develloppers. heck players can produce incredible lap times in races that the Ai can't do or won't be able to replicate.I managed once to finish a race with more than 35 seconds between me the first and the Ai ( 2nd)

Fourth , why would you want rewind , in a game whose main goal is lap times and challenging your friend times ? Those 2 are total opposites.

Fifth , IF the Ai rammed you , that means that you've made a mistake. The Ai in this game hits you only if you break too early or if you don't pay attention to the Other cars driving lines.

In short , it's not forza , how about learning the game a little ?? You can still go back to your prefered racers afterwards

It isn't necessary to master a game to not like the difficulty. But if that's the only way you'll consider alternate opinions, I've 3-starred all events in the vanilla content midway through the legends portion. I firmly believe the skill ceiling is too high on many events (again, ones I've already 3-starred).

The AI only crashes into you when you make a bad mistake urself.
Completely false, especially in Pro/Legends events.

This shit again. I wish people could actually ever be eloquent enough to define what they're looking for with "soul" and "personality." IMO, DC has some of the most alive races and environments I've ever experienced. It feels like the devs knew exactly what they wanted.

This has just simply not been my experience, that the AI follows a line. The races, again, feel very alive for me with lots of car to car interaction and swerving.

See here, bemoaning lack of customization and rewind? I think this game really is not for you - those features are intentionally absent, and I'm not sure why someone would walk into a game having no idea what its intent and goals are. It's like being disappointed because Witcher 3 is not a turn based JRPG.

You can get good at this game - I'm actually not terribly good, but there's lots of people in the community that have. The handling in particular is some of my favorite ever in a racing game. This is not to say something silly like "get gud" but you can substantially improve over time. It's not just that it's bad. But regardless, it does not seem to be your cup of tea.

FYI I suck at driveclub so viewers discretion advised. After I was done with this race, I went ahead and upgrades the demo to full game :D

Glad you're enjoying it, it's a cracking game, so glad I picked it up at launch, the lack of a decent racer meant it was good enough even without Online functions working at the time. The season pass is certainly something you might want to consider too.

Just wish more people had taken the gamble and purchased it on release rather than stamping foot and refusing to buy it until the PS+ version emerged.

Try to focus on racing better and getting to first place before bothering with additional challenges. Its not super hard...

This might not really help you, but this is a demo that throws you directly into the water and expects you to learn to swim that way. Imho the main tour of the full version starts out a looot easier with slower cars (hot hatch class and no weather) and slowly builds up.

Finally unbanned so I can finally engage with all the former Luddites of the #Driveclub world.

1) I find the comments on the learning curve strange but ok.
2) This game (if you let it) puts you on edge in most races (this is normal).
3) Don't start out using the Hyper cars, you will hate your life and finally
4) The only way to get good at the game is to learn the tracks. Stick to one region first and run the tracks over and over and over in single race mode. Then, try the challenges. I would also advise to knock the opponent cars down to 5 so you have 6 cars racing total. Watch them, learn the lines, etc. Also, stick to a singluar car for a while to get the feel of it.

Still loving the game and I haven't even maxed out on the level cap nor joined a club yet... I'm sure there are new ones starting each day now.

But there are so many other things to do except Dam Busters? Tried it for the first time yesterday and after two races, I moved to something else, to tackle it later.
I found love in chalanges - like in new SSX I will race one or two times, be in the leaderboard and will be receiving some fame the next day or at the end of the challenge.
I also begun to look into our CheeseGAF club "objectives" and am trying to push them.
Bought season pass yesterday after having the game from lauch.

I love it. Butt clenching situations, pure excitement.

If u want a sim thatll put u to sleep sure. Driving in first place for 3 laps with a souped up car that outclasses the competition isnt a lot of fun and exciting to me.

I was going ~130mph and accelerating on a straightaway in a V12 Aston Zagato, when I was overtaken by a Caterham R500. Sorry, but in no universe is that possible.


This isn't the way they handle "rubber banding" in Driveclub. No car will ever go beyond its speed limit. AI drivers slow down / speed up dependent on your skill. The Caterham can hit 130 on a straight in Driveclub so maybe you were going sower. But you could have at least pressed the share button if you considered it impossible, that's what it's there for.

It's one of the worst reviewed PS4 games! If I'm trolling, it is a completely objective troll.

I just don't think it's a very good game. They seem to be continuing to patch it, which is why I continue to look at Driveclub threads from time to time, but it's truly a game without a market.

Wasn't the initial marketing pitch for this game supposed to be that of a fun, social racer? Why make it hard as balls then? People shouldn't have to spend 30 hours to get "good" at a game that is supposed to be a fun social racer from the makers of Motorstorm.

It's just piss poor game design. There may be a decent game buried somewhere, but I haven't seen it yet. Maybe they're working on a 1.5 patch that overhauls the thing.

Really? This is the first racing game I've ever played where my brain tricks itself into thinking I'm actually driving the car. And that's not just because of the aesthetics.

If u want a sim thatll put u to sleep sure. Driving in first place for 3 laps with a souped up car that outclasses the competition isnt a lot of fun and exciting to me.

After spending 2 hours on Dam Busters and still not getting a top 3 finish, I think I can safely hang the game up. Props to Evolution for sticking to their hardcore racing game for the hardcore racing fan thesis, just wish I was harcore enough to be able to appreciate it properly

Just copying my reply from above:
This might not really help you, but this is a demo that throws you directly into the water and expects you to learn to swim that way. Imho the main tour of the full version starts out a looot easier with slower cars (hot hatch class and no weather) and slowly builds up.

Dam Busters is simply one of the harder events, probably the hardest in the Startline tour. I used to hate it but its actually pretty awesome, but simply hard and I get why a newcomer would be turned off by it. However this is a very vertical slice of the game missing the whole introduction part that you usally have.

I've played forza 5, forza horizon 2, and driveclub. Enjoyed them all, but they each feel like different games to me. I don't think it makes much sense to argue which is better. Reminds me of mario vs. Sonic. It looks like the season pass adds quite a bit - is it mostly new challenges and cars?
