Fighting Games Weekly | Aug 3-10 | Rising to the Occasion

Probably because they're tired of seeing the same faces over and over and over and over and over.

When a new game comes around, it makes perfect sense for people to want to see stuff they haven't seen a million times already.

And, SF3 characters aren't "obscure" any more. It's not 1997. How many SF3 characters are now in USF4? How many SF3 moves have crept into all sorts of games, now? Daigo parry was in which game, again? People know what SF3 is now.

That moment featured which characters again?

I dunno about new characters for the sake of new characters. Some characters are just iconic and it's hard to create truly iconic characters. There's a reason spiderman/batman/whoever stick around forever. Of course you need fresh blood in fighting games, but as long as they're willing to make substantial changes to how classic characters play, who cares?

I'd rather them shake it up even if that ends poorly but I don't really look at a large amount of returning SFII characters a negative from the jump. Those characters give the franchise identity and it's not like they play like their SFII versions. Plus SFV has a smaller proportion of SFII/WW characters than SFIV did initially too, so I think it's kind of a healthy improvement without compromising those characters they know everybody loves (and Vega, I guess).

Dah, what's ur take on the new Kamiya joint?
It's interesting, visually excellent and has some cool ideas involving controlling the dragon in combat but the actual combat looks spotty. This is not a standard stylish action game, its some blend of action RPG. Also seems really "safe" in some areas like it was focus tested a lot.

Why are you a junior?

Little late and pretty mentally fatigued here. Had a lot of overtime for goin on 9 days straight with no days off yet so this week just keepin it light and fluffy till I can get a technical question for you.

Ghost in the Shell would be neat. Lots of different cyborgs to draw from who are visually distinct and already have abilities which could be adapted into interesting fighting game move sets. Have it play like the capcom Jojo game (anime game with a button that does something unique to the character you're using).

I don't understand why every time a game that has old characters from multiple games in it, it turns into this one reps this and this one reps that. When Marvel dropped I remember people saying Ryu was the SF1 rep, Chun for 2, Akuma for 3 and Viper for 4. Can't they just put characters that fit the game or are iconic in?

They pushed the story heavy in this game and while a lot of people want Karin, I don't even remember what her story was. But I'm pretty sure she doesn't have a story without Sakura so unless it's a 2 for 1 I don't see it.

People thought it was going to be mix of all past SF games instead of the SF2 + couple Alpha characters that it currently is.

They're all alpha characters

New games need a good amount of fresh blood on the roster.

8 returning + 4 new + 4 remixed

Is less interesting than:

6 returning + 4 new + 6 remixed

Which what I think the expectation had become.

There isn't a difference between returning and remixed. I would understand wanting completely new characters, and very few people actually seem to want that.

Probably because they're tired of seeing the same faces over and over and over and over and over.

Your points about them not being obscure anymore and seeing the same faces don't connect with each other.

Yeah I'm fairly sure there are not invisible quotas devs strive for in these cases, but we all try to make sense of ambiguity when we are thirsty for new information.

Also I remember that for MvC3, lol @ Akuma for III.

Anyone know if Necalli is in the GamesCom build of SFV?

Yo what if a ranma game had stage hazards and you could fall in the water

Or if everyone had a special move that threw water so you could force your opponent in to a specific 'stance' if it was a better matchup for you.

It would open up all sorts of layers!

That would be cheating for Ranma and Pantyhose Taro. It would be trolling Ryouga. XD

Naw cause Ryoga would be super hard to hit!

Nobody cares about Ranma besides hentai artists.
Since they are highly skilled what they care could be very important.

This shit would be great.
Ryoga would be a troll for the person who did the dumb shit of throwing him in the water.

Ranma and Urusei Yatsura are what got me into anime 20 years ago.

The moeblob crap is what got me out of anime.

Its easy to talk about taking risks when your money isn't on the line. At the end of the day yall still gonna buy sfv 3rd strike characters or not. It's not like the 20 people that don't buy it for that reason is going to hurt Capcom at all. I guarantee that a sfv with more sf2 characters would sell better than a sfv with more 3rd strike characters. The roster will get bigger have some damn patience.

HNGGGH!

Part of me even wants a Ranma anime reboot.

Part of me doesn't want to risk ruining my memories of the original.
Ranma anime had seasons of filler.

A remake/reboot series more closely related to the manga series with a proper ending.... I would pay for that.
