Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain PC performance thread

Well, I had to lower my OC so my 980 Ti didn't lock up trying to render Afghanistan.

Still, in 4K with every setting turned up as high as it can go, I'm managing easily 40+ fps and usually in the 45-50 range. This game is optimized really well and looks and runs great.

1440p all settings maxed except shadows at high and motion blur at medium running almost entirely locked 60fps. Had 2 or 3 drops to the low 50s in like 3.5 hours of play.

Super happy with it so far. Amazing game and amazing performance. Bravo kojima and team on an a job well done.

Does this game have actual volume settings unlike GZ? Cos that was the stupidest fucking thing

Nope. It's just custom soundtrack volume and that's it.

Also, this game gives me a mix of keyboard and controller prompts, I don't know how to do half the stuff the game tells me since the options menu isn't much help either. Game runs amazing, but these options are laughable

Hello everyone, this is the Dev Team in Tokyo. Thank you everyone for your reports. After investigating on our side, we've determined that the game does not launch properly when using a Phenom II CPU.

We've isolated the problem and are working on a solution which should be ready in roughly 5 hours.

Thank you very much for your patience and understanding as we resolve this issue.

Hmmmm... Low still looks better imo. High looks "too sharp". Unnatural.

A low resolution filtered shadow is not soft, it is actually very jaggy.

I hope they patch in the SSR... the official konami comparison had it...

Fck yes, exactly what i wanted to see! Props to KJ and his team. Il play my PS4 copy once ive topped the PC version lol

Well that's stupid.

With GZ I had to make a virtual desktop using windows 10, then swap desktops with the game open, then change its windows volume from there and swap back.

So obtuse and so so dumb, just add some volume options for christs sake

Just played through the intro.

Native 4K
All in game settings maxed.

Riding around now, framerate seems rock solid but I wouldn't venture to say what it is without a framerate counter. If I had to guess I would say 40's but I could be way off.

SLI 970 FTWs

Will update with FPS count later.

Game is way better looking than I anticipated.

The game minimum requirements says:

i5-4460 CPU ( btw released Q2'14)
Instruction set extensions- SSE4.1/4.2, AVX 2.0

So, in my opinion, if a user's cpu does not meet these criteria, there should not be any questions why something is not working. (quite demanding requirements! :) )

I've just read that on the Geforce page.....

What a strange oversight.

NICE!

is it important to overclock the CPU? I've got mine at stock.

This is a really fucking good port. Downsampling from 2880x1620 on a single 980 ti with everything maxed and HBAO+ enabled at a seemingly locked 60 fps. Also, this game looks fantastic.

Anyone with SLI, how's the usage between the cards like?

Also did anyone try to decrypt the assets using GzsTool? It would be spectacular since the GZ DS4 button mod then possibly can be applied to TPP.

(I'd test it myself but I'm still downloading it atm)

Is this a sign that my Phenom II is getting old?

As someone wrote in a steamcommunity thread it's simply checking an unchecked box and recompiling the game files, so we all hope it'll roll out soon.

However, seems kind of lazy to me that Konami does not test their biggest release ever on different systems...

Well it is below the minimum specs which is an indication that they didn't test on it.

the KB/M controls in Ground Zeroes were terrible...they are a bit better in Phantom Pain but still not ideal...they streamlined a lot of settings so not as many options...that being said the NumPad and side Mouse buttons are still not mappable

For those with crashing to desktop on launch do you have MSI afterburner running? I just discovered that if i enable RTSS i also get the crash on launch, the error says RTSS hook something failed. When i turn off RTSSand close MSI AB it boots and runs fine. So im guessing there is an issue there maybe..?

I remember i could not get the OSD to show with Batman Arkham Knight and resorted to a hack where I had to copy a file into the profiles folder for RTSS for it to shows the fps, i wonder if something here is also needed.

Win 8.1 Pro
MSI GTX 970
8GB
SSD

So it seems from the nvidia article that ideal settings for a 970 would be:

-effects on high (extra high destroying performance as it's some future hardware setting)
-post effects on low (as high enables that shitty blurry FXAA and is otherwise only used for the ingame AO which you don't wana use anyways)
-AO turned off
-HBAO+ forced in control panel
-DOF off
-everything else maxed (very little performance impact)
-1440p with DSR

I wish there was a seperate setting for bloom (so I could turn it off) and that they 'd patch SSR back in.

EDIT: I get the crash to desktop too with MSI afterburner, you have to disable it to get the game to start.

edit 2: wow the use of DOF in the intro bit is amazing, first time I've seen it used in a game where it actually adds something meaningful that couldn't be done without it.

970 and 1440p sounds weird to me but I have to assume they know what they're doing
Why?
I play everything at 1440p on a 970, sometimes I have to lower a few things but it's totally worth for image quality.

I don't think excluding as in rendering impossible even starting the is the right way to implement minimum requirements.

Backwards compatibility is one of the biggest pluses of PC gaming. Implementing artificial barriers is just nonsense.

but nvm, they're working on it.

So I had about 55-60 fps on a 780ti @1440p with everything maxed. Once I turned effects to high it pretty much went back to 60 so I guess it's like Sneaky said.

So, I have everything on max and just played through the prologue.

There were three moments where the game kicked my ass: The very first scene you see on boot up(I think it's just literally a shot of a mirror),
Ishmael moving your body as you see the first soldier gun down the hospital worker
and the close up of a reflection on a soldier's helmet.

Otherwise it's been rock solid 60 for gameplay with the (very) rare dips during cutscenes. The last three stuck out to me though because they were particularly extreme dips, anywhere from 30s to, I think I straight up saw the number 9 at one point. The reflections I can understand, although I don't really know what the hell was going on to cause a drop during the Ishmael moment. If it keeps popping up in cutscenes, I guess I'll try to lower post processing or something.

Otherwise, GZ levels of performance with even crazier visuals. Great port, at least as far as performance is concerned.

Do I have to turn AO off to enable HBAO+? I thought it just gets overwritten no matter what setting you use.

Same here, pretty good performance through the prologue with some extreme drops. I saw it go as low as 13 fps but it was only during those moments you mentioned. There must be some combination of effects that absolutely cripples performance in those spots.

My specs for reference:

i5-4690K
GTX 970
16GB RAM
Windows 10

The nvidia article said that once shit hits the fan (explosions, smoke grenades -with the smoke casting shadows etc which is probably really expensive , rain , storms etc) that the extra high effects will tank performance.

Let me know if you get any drops once you hit the open world and shit hits the fan, I'ma stay on high for now just because drops ruin the experience for me but I wouldn't mind the higher setting if it's fine.

@ andyBNV I really appreciate those performance overviews and especially the graphs showing the framerate impact of each setting that you do for new releases, it's really helpful to find a good starting point to tweak from (which can be pretty difficult these days with so many settings having an unpredictable impact on performance during different parts of a game, it used to be so simple with just shadow/texture res and LOD)

Yeah, I'm going to stop playing now and wait for confirmation on whether they'll be patching it in.

Really? I mean. I'm a bigger graphics whore than most, but not enough to stop playing a 100+ hour game until a single graphical effect is patched back in. And SSR are one of my favorite effects of this generation.

But the game does have SSR, I saw it in the intro the first time. It looked just like in that screenshot with the staircase.

Interestingly, also PS4 has it in the indoor scenes.

As a general rule should you use nvidia control panel to override most in game settings?

Should I be using hbao+ in GTAV for example?

Also how well dies the optimise button work in nvidia experience?

It is dramatically better if you look at the NV graphics comparison.

here you go http://www.geforce.com/whats-new/gu...e-phantom-pain-graphics-and-performance-guide it's alone woth it for removing the halos around the characters imo

pretty big difference with HBAO+ enabled...looks a lot crisper compared to SSAO...with no GameWorks features in Phantom Pain the addition of HBAO+ via the CP is Nvidia's way of adding some exclusive features to the game
