The head of one of Cleveland’s largest police unions is calling on Ohio Gov. John Kasich to temporarily restrict the state’s open carry gun laws during this week’s Republican National Convention following Sunday’s shooting in Louisiana that killed three officers and wounded at least three others.

“We are sending a letter to Gov. Kasich requesting assistance from him. He could very easily do some kind of executive order or something — I don’t care if it’s constitutional or not at this point,” Stephen Loomis, president of Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association, told CNN. “They can fight about it after the RNC or they can lift it after the RNC, but I want him to absolutely outlaw open-carry in Cuyahoga County until this RNC is over.”

CNN has reached out to Kasich to confirm he’s received the letter and requested comment. In the meantime, he released a video statement regarding Baton Rouge.

“I just spoke to the Ohio Highway Patrol and told them about how much we appreciate their service here at the convention in Cleveland only to be informed of the terrible loss of life, the police officers in Baton Rouge,” he said. “Our hearts and prayers go out to their families and let’s be clear, these kind of vicious attacks on police officers will only serve to drive a wedge and destroy the very fabric of our society. But to the families, god bless and thank you.”

State law in Ohio allows for licensed firearm owners to wear their weapons in public. With the exception of a small “secure zone” inside and around the Quicken Loans Arena, residents, delegates and protesters are legally permitted to walk around the city — including within its 1.7 square mile regulated “event zone” — any firearm not explicitly banned by the state.

Loomis also said officers here would begin ramping up inspections and oversight over anyone who is holstering a weapon entering the downtown area, where the Republican convention is scheduled to begin on Monday.

“We are going to be looking very, very hard at anyone who has an open carry,” he said. “An AR-15, a shotgun, multiple handguns. It’s irresponsible of those folks — especially right now — to be coming downtown with open carry AR’s or anything else. I couldn’t care less if it’s legal or not. We are constitutional law enforcement, we love the Constitution, support it and defend it, but you can’t go into a crowded theater and scream fire. And that’s exactly what they’re doing by bringing those guns down there.”

The Cleveland Police Department did not immediately respond to request for comment.

The union has also reached out to Police Chief Calvin Williams, asking that officers — some of whom have been positioned alone and without vehicles — be grouped together on their patrols, especially outside of the downtown security zones.

“We’re going to be doing things differently (after today’s attack),” Loomis said. “Right now, the chief of police thinks it’s a good idea to have one officer without a car standing at a post in various intersections all around the city? Thirty blocks from downtown? I had a guy last night standing out there by himself without the benefit of protection of a police car. Or partner. That is absolute insanity to me. There is no reason for that. We are going to demand that the police chief — at a minimum — make sure that we have three officers working together, watching each other’s backs.”

This is pretty much the most hilarious quote I have ever seen...

It’s irresponsible of those folks — especially right now — to be coming downtown with open carry AR’s or anything else. I couldn’t care less if it’s legal or not.

There's no good result coming out of RNC in Cleveland. Even a body-count free event -- and it won't be zero -- will be touted as a lucky result.

And everyone can see it coming.

This thing is becoming more and more of a train wreck. This is gonna be a fun week

If it's just Republican stupidity on display, it will be fun.

I'm worried something bad is going to happen, and garner the Republicans a whole lot of sympathy.

Yeah, Cleveland is going to be crazy around this time. There are even signs on the highways around here with a number that you call to give tips to the FBI. I'm glad my commute doesn't go near there.

That sounds like a guy signing his own resignation, he literally swore and oath to uphold the constitution.
Seems like police are going to become some of the biggest advocates of gun control.
Big surprise they want a monopoly on firearms and the carry of firearms.
I mean it would really suck if unruly rabble would be able to fight back in any capacity against oppression and wrongdoings.

Edit: Just to make clear, I'm in no way condoning the murder of random police officers. That's wrong on every level. I'm speaking about defending against specific cases of unlawful abuse of power and or danger to yourself or loved ones.

I hope Kaisch can and does follow through on the request but highly highly doubt it

"I respect and appreciate you for you do, Ohio Police but uh going to have to pass on that whole temporary ban on open carry thing as the NRA would not like that. Just stay safe, I mean you have guns right?"

Seems like police are going to become some of the biggest advocates of gun control.

I imagine that's one of the large reasons Chicago has some of the tightest gun laws

Surely they should be more worried about people who are concealed carrying guns.

Cuz you know they are hiding a lethal weapon.

Open carry in Ohio is pretty much worthless anyway. Almost every store and building has signs saying weapons are not permitted inside.

bish gets all the credit :)
I have never seen anyone open carry here, but I'm sure there will be plenty of "patriots" walking around everywhere. I'm staying the fuck away from downtown.

everything about this is amazing.
cognitive dissonance meets pure physics.

with the temperature of things lately I don't see how there isn't a shooting at the RNC. it's practically preordained.

Pretty sure there's a picture already floating around with a dude strapped..it's gonna happen weather they want it to or not.

Unfortunately, you're pretty spot on. Hope not, but let's be real..

What, you are seriously allowed to openly carry fricking SHOTGUNS and ASSAULT RIFLES around with you everywhere, seriously?

Things are worse in same parts in the US than I even thought possible. As a European just the thought of it is absolutely mind blowing.

So I guess there will be even more people bringing guns to make a statement then.

That's not how law works.

Actually it is in this country.

Some parts? Open carry is legal in like 80% of the country. Probably higher even.

What about water pistols?

None of those..or tennis balls!

guns are dangerous and a threat to public safety????

There is literally no reason there should be a suspension of open carry. Republicans are the ones that pass all these bat shit insane laws. Then when they have a convention suddenly they are like "but our lives must be protected!!!" Yeah fuck off.

Where were the police unions when all these absurdly permissive gun laws were getting passed at the NRA's behest in the first place?

It really is comical to see certain groups finally realize that the proliferation of guns in America helps nobody but gun manufacturers.

Well, yeah. You never know when George III and his redcoats will show up and annex Ohio.

Anyone with enough sense should keep their ass out of Cleveland this week if they don't need to be there, I know I am.

Because this

is entirely accurate.

Sure, I can at least rationalize open carry for handguns, but civilians being allowed to run around with shotguns and fricking (100 shot mag) assault rifles is extremely disturbing. I didn't think things would be this bad in parts of the US. I mean selling blind people guns is already completely irresponsible, but this just takes the cake.

If you did that in Europe everyone would assume you are a terrorist or robbing some place and a swat team would be there in minutes. Also helps explain why cops in the US are so quick to pull out their gun.

Well, yeah. You never know when George III and his redcoats will show up and annex Ohio.
Heh, gave me a good chuckle, thanks for that.

If police chiefs around the country came out in direct support of Hillary Clinton, asking for reforms, there would be an outcry, but then if there was massive pressure by the Republicans on those police chief to resign you'd also have masses of police officers who would quit too, and the Republicans would quickly turn around and try to save face and you'd have reforms pass quicker than you can imagine.
