Bound (PS4) |OT| Dance the night away

Based on what I have read on here I have just bought the game and am just about to stick my head in my PSVR and give it a go!

This game showed me the best example of the difference between VR and regular tv.
When you put on the headset and launch the game you're in Cinematic mode, which means you see the game like it's on a big tv right in front of you.

In the main menu you see the dancer sitting on a rectangle, and it's like watching it on a big tv.
Then you enable the PS VR mode in the menu and suddenly you don't see the dancer sitting on the rectangle anymore but you're physicly standing next to the dancer!

The difference is enormous!

Would there be a problem with having exactly the same camera as on the normal version of the game, and providing a motion sickness warning?

I'm afraid we wouldn't be able to pass through TRC with that camera. Sony is strict about motion sickness. And our 2D camera is really bad for VR. Robot rescue has constant velocity camera, we couldn't make similar because of variable speed of Princess. It's instant puke. Have you check on Jim Sterling's review of "Hear They Lie"? This is the other reaction for those who are sensitive :).

In your opinion....

I already have Bound, and PSVR. Should I wait until my Pro comes in to start it? Is the jump going to be worth me waiting to play for the first time?

Unfortunately you have to pass the comfort test which is not only the framerate, but also general user experience, I'm afraid that the camera wouldn't pass the test. It's part of the TRC.

Go ahead! You can play the game on PRO in different order and it will look and sound differently based on the order of the chapters you will select (there are 120 combinations).

On PRO there's also additional volumetric lighting added, it's up to you :). I think it would be a good thing to play now and then compare with PRO version and write about it from player perspective, because we are so much biased already that it doesn't make sense to say anything ;).

Oh sorry I meant "in your opinion" about the question I was asking, definitely not questioning the TRC haha, I should have been more clear

Thanks for the reply, I just remember seeing a lot of very fine background details in some of the gifs and thought it might be a better experience with the higher resolution rendering. Really love the look of the game

Very cool how much work the devs are putting into the game, after release (lots of fixes, PSVR version, even a Pro upgrade). Much appreciated.

I understand the devs reasons for not having a free camera but for someone like me who can stomach anything in VR. It would be cool to try.

What's the difference between the 2 camera modes in VR? Which do you guys prefer?

I bought the game today. Played about half an hour and really enjoying it so far. It's very lovely in VR.

The difference is that the camera will rotate to the direction that the character is facing in Alternate mode. All settings will have explanations in the next update.

Just finished this after playing entirely in VR. Man, this was one excellent game. Experiencing it all in VR was pretty mesmerizing. And geeze, that soundtrack; AMAZING!

Just beat the game. I wish the story wasn't quite as abstract. I didn't have any idea where it was going until the last couple levels. I think I preferred (putting in spoiler tags just to be safe)
Papo & Yo more than Bound which I feel are comparable because of the similar stories they tell. Bound is the better game gameplay and artistic wise, but Papo & Yo was upfront on the story it was telling and left a bigger impact for me. With no facial expressions of the character you play as and only still shots of your memories, it just didn't click with me much.

Just finished, and I feel the same way.

As a huge fan of
Papo & Yo,
(a game everyone who played Bound should experience) I immediately wanted to (spoilers for Bound and previously mentioned game)
project the abuse themes into Bound. At first I assumed it would be another abusive father story, but from my interpretation they seemed to flip the roles around. I didn't see the story as a father abandoning his daughter, but as a wife causing her husband to leave. Bound is nowhere even remotely powerful as Papo & Yo. The end of that game made me weep uncontrollably.

Hi,

It's time to share some of the details about upcoming patch 1.02 for Bound.
I tried a couple of times to describe how our renderer works, but I believe that finally I found the best explanation ...
On PS4 PRO we are rendering edges of geometry in 4K native with multisampling antialiasing and the inner parts of polygons are upscaled from 1080P. Since our game uses mostly geometry and does not rely on texturing too much, I think we got into sweet spot and now we have nicely looking 4K at 60 Hz.
I believe thou that most of you are waiting for the information about PSVR upgrade. We are rendering twice as many pixels than on regular PS4 in VR and adding extra effects on top of that. This makes our game super sharp, literally hitting the display resolution of PSVR headset.
To not make my words empty, here are couple of images without compression, showing new filters in 4K:

Thank you for such good comments on our game!

The new photomode filters and increased resolution look amazing on my UHD DELL P2415Q. I'm just gonna post one of those PNGs because they're huge!

Every beautiful game needs a native 2160p photomode with supersampling so people can create perfect wallpapers like this.

The 'NEXT FRAME' option added with an earlier patch is a great addition, one I don't remember seeing in other games.

If there's plans for another future patch, one more feature I believe would really help efficiently set pictures up is a user-customisable RESET SETTINGS. For example, I'd like to press triangle to clear all settings except FILM GRAIN INTENSITY 10% and FILM GRAIN SCALE 0%.

Another approach would be to make the triangle button cycle between a few profiles but the UI starts getting more and more complex.

Yeah it should probably be very hard to do it without destorying current UI :(. The 1.02 update should be online tomorrow.

Congrats to the 20ish people who got the Platinum for this, it won't be for me. I tried some of the sequence breaks and it's pretty frustrating to just pull off one. Can't see myself getting the speedrun for the levels or the full game. I also feel like the game was suited better to the 'Journey-like' experience, the platforming isn't tight or fun enough to pull off these shortcuts and sequence breaks.

I purchased this thanks to the sale. I wanted it earlier but unfortunately I've been really tight on funds so it had to wait.

I just finished it now and wow, it's beautiful. I absolutely love Bound and I sincerely thank the developers for creating such a unique and visually gorgeous experience.

I still need to play this, I bought it at launch to support the project but I haven't had time yet.
Will probably play it straight using the VR mode, hopefully before the end of the year.

It's not very long of a game depending on if you like to take your time. I completed it in around 5 hours.

Picked this game up 2 days before the sale d'oh! But I am enjoying it nonetheless. Beautiful game, playing thru in VR for first go around with the Pro. Only feedback would be that I wish I had more camera control in VR, maybe a bit of z control and a camera follow.

Yes we are working on it and it will be added in upcoming patch 1.03 I think you will like it :).

Only played a little bit so far but I'm enjoying it. Looks fantastic and is off the wall like other Plastic things (loved Linger In Shadows even though it wasn't a game)

I bought this one sale when it was 50% off. I've been wanting to play it ever since I got my hands on it last year at PSX. I have a lot I want to say about the game, but I'm not finished with yet. So, I will say this:

Why the dirty camera filter?!

Ugh, it's such a distraction from an otherwise gorgeous looking game.

Well for me that was a Journey like experience. Short, gorgeous, and sad. Absolutely loved it and is only like the second game I took screenshots of.

The 'dirty filter' gives additional paper look to the visuals :). We removed it in VR version since there it seriously looked like your lenses were dirty :).

BTW - there's another sale for EU region going on right now:

https://store.playstation.com/#!/en-gb/games/bound/cid=EP9000-CUSA04380_00-BOUNDGAMEEU00001

Only 8€, bought! Thanks for the heads up.

This sounds very promising, since I adored Journey.

EDIT:
It's 8 euros to me and we both live in finland me and you.

It was 20€ up until today.

will there be supersampling on 1080p screens on ps4 pro? I may be wrong, but I thought image quality was unchanged in version 1.02 on ps4 pro on my 1080p OLED (slightly jaggied)... :/

On PRO 1080P we have 8xMSAA enabled which is better than standard 4x on regular PS4. If you plan to buy 4K TV in the future, check Bound when you have it :)

I bought it over the weekend during the Black Friday sale. Planning to play it after the next patch with the new PSVR camera options.

HOWEVER, I wanted to check out the crazy good PSVR IQ everyone is talking about because I have a Pro now. I was pretty much floored as well. It does indeed look amazing. My wife was asking me to "skip the cutscene and get to the gameplay" but I told her it wasn't a cutscene - I just wanted to stand around in the first area and look around. I said just being there was worth the $10 alone!

My reply when someone compared Bound to Robot Rescue

No.
Robot Rescue is whimsical and fun and you actually do something. Platforming plus collection coins, rescuing robots.
Bound has you walking and flicking a stick to get the camera just perfect before you have to flick it again 3 seconds later. You don't do anything but walk and roll around if you see some harmful pixels up ahead. I guess picking up the cubes is comparable to picking up coins but you don't have to go out of your way to get them. They are literally on path you have to walk.

I appreciate Bound's art style and it being a 3rd person game in VR but the game is pretty terrible. It's message or subtext is constantly beating you over the head with those Child's room interludes (which look incredible in VR by the way). If the game had more to do it would be a lot better but I don't think that's what was intended here..I think it was meant to be a walking modern art project.

. As of this weekend I am up to the tree level in Bound...doubt I am going to complete it. All looks no fun. Top 3 VR graphics though.

Saw the game being on sale and pulled the trigger. Game looks interesting and worth being supported. And devs being awesome on gaming forums is always a plus :)

Won't be able to play till weeked but excited about it! Loved Journey and Abzu and I see people comparing Bound with them.

Played some Bound (VR/Pro) over the weekend. Some impressions:

- This game is beautiful. Looks fantastic artistically and is as crisp as a PSVR image can get.
- This game is boring. Admittedly I was already tired during a couple of my sessions, but I fell asleep (while in the headset) a few times playing this game.
- The camera is a chore. I know they are working on this, and I'm really looking forward to that update. But man, constantly keeping the camera caught up with the character and all of the blinking gets exhausting. It also recenters every time you move the camera, making it somewhat difficult to naturally follow a character with your head and move the camera (I have to consciously recenter my head before moving the camera).

I can see how people can love this game and I really appreciate what the devs are doing here technically as well as their community involvement, but ultimately this game is not my cup of tea. That said, I am very interested in their future output.

Just checking .. you know that you can rotate the camera around the character with analog's left/right? Also the alternate camera setting will force the camera to rotate in the direction the character is facing. But probably it will be best for you to wait for the patch :).

That are some honest words! Thank you :)

I ended up onesitting it yesterday lol

Overall I really enjoyed the game. I think, on the contrary with games like Journey and Abzu, the game works better when you're try to play it as a speedrun, instead of taking it slowly. Platforming is really simple but it's fun enough when you try to do it while moving fast (never stopping, never using the shield but the evade button..). I wonder if that was the dev's intention considering there's a speedrun mode after finishing the game. I still think the first 2 levels are just too simple though. The latter levels are big improvement

Other than that, the game looks amazing, the music and story is good (although I would have liked to know more of the reasons about
the family divorce, but maybe I didn't get it
. Loved the little details like what are the things that damage the dancer, or the raindrops being the PS icons!

Just finished Bound. I was enthralled the entire time. The themes of each area, the way the story was told, and the music... Absolutely spellbound. Beautiful game.
