The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ |OT| 200 More Hours of Bad Keeper Runs

I bought Afterbirth for the PS4 and on the very first daily challenge, the game crashed. Kinda defeats the point of having the mode if it is going to bum out like that. Never had a single crash on the hundreds of hours put into Rebirth. Is this a known bug?

The PS4 version just crashes a lot, with the Afterbirth update/DLC.
And yeah, it's annoying as fuck for daily challenges, since you can't resume those after a crash.
And if that's not fixed eventually, I expect it will make those daily challenge-related Afterbirth + achievements nightmarish.

Getting sick and tired of my bad RNG on Switch. I cannot get a run going with any character aside from Eden.

I'm getting bad items all the way through, with Eden I start with bad items but get lucky with pick ups and then breeze through.

I just want a few good runs on other characters so I can get some unlocks. I don't want to play through on normal but hard mode is being a dick to me.

I used to play the PS4 version and the game would frequently crash when entering a shop.

It's very odd and certainly only happens for me with the DLC installed. It's not a deal breaker in regular runs, as you can continue, but it does piss one off during a daily run.

Doesn't look like it will be fixed now either, which is a bit of a swizz.

I still don't get this game. Is this a rogue like game? Do you start from the beginning if you die?
It looks cool and I want to buy it but I hate rogue like games.

It's very much a roguelike. Permanent content unlocks the more you play allowing you to go further, but if you die, you're dead.

Thanks that's a shame. I have no idea how you make any progress in roguelikes.

It's a short game. Your first successful run will probably take no more than 30-45 minutes (not including any failed runs that come before hand). When you beat the game, it actually gets longer on subsequent runs. There's a ton of stuff to unlock (different characters, as well as a ton of items and bosses) which will appear on future runs. Basically the game keeps growing and changing as you play it.

It's not the kind of roguelike that you play for awhile and decide it's impossible to finish. What defines it as a roguelike is that when you die, you start your next game at the beginning. Everything is also completely random (floor layouts, powers you find, resources you find). If you're the kind of person who is turned off by roguelikes because you dislike a lack of progression, there is a lot of stuff in Isaac you can work on that gives you a sense of progression.

To build on this comment, each run will give you a random choice of items which will give you different odds of survival - more health, stronger attacks, bigger bombs, faster speed etc, as you make more attempts you'll be able to discover how those items work and how they combine to give yourself a better chance at beating the game. You'll also learn how to defeat the enemies without being hit as often, and so on.

The progression in the early stages of the game is all down to learning about the game and how to get further through it, then when you "beat" the game for the first time you'll unlock more items and eventually the game will get longer/harder and open up a lot more.

To build on THIS, there's also several mechanics and items in the game that give you rewards in exchange for health, so as you start getting better at avoiding damage, you get more confident that you can utilize these things and skate by with lower health.

Thanks that's a shame. I have no idea how you make any progress in roguelikes.

So the way it works when you start is that there are 6 floors per run. You wander around looking for items to help power you up, then go and beat the boss on the 6th floor. The more runs you do, the more you beat the boss, the more floors, bosses, items, challenges, and characters you unlock.

The actual gameplay feels a lot like Diablo to me, in that you want to get a good build with a lot of item synergy. It's very different from Diablo in that you don't carry over items from one run to the next, but during a run you may wind up getting items which, together, make you unstoppable. And that's where the fun is- when you wind up getting a combination which makes you particularly insane. Like Tech-X, Spoon bender, and Odd Mushroom, which gives you quick shooting laser rings that bend towards enemies.

It's probably not for everyone but I'm hopelessly addicted to this. Closing on 150 hours on Switch.

Each run you get more and more unlocks and further and further. The progress in this game is structured around bosses beaten and items unlocked. On the PC version there are over 300 achievements.

Even if your run resets due to dying or beating it, as you progress you do get stronger, because the best items in the game are mostly all hidden behind unlocks, so in order to become crazy over powered on a run, you need to have unlocked the items needed to do so.

so them booster packs

Any day now. Maybe. We've been told it was coming "next week" for 2 weeks now, so maybe this one is for reals.

Y'all better hope switch gets no content updates. Crooked Penny did nothing wrong to deserve the nerf it received on PC.

Finally got Rerun and Zip last night, and now 2/5 towards 5 Nights at Mom's.

#progress

After that there's not much left to do outside of stuff with The Lost and Keeper...urgh.

I believe it's 500 coins in the greed donation machine?

Sure is - I just got itt.

I've been banging my head against the wall like a good lil chap but after one run where the greed machine broke on me in 3 coins and the next in 1 I decided to read up on how it works.

Yeah... that's some fuckery.

I had no idea percentages were tied to specific characters over time after greed machine use. I am now doing the d20/ battery thing on fresh chars because fuck me this is a monstrous grind otherwise.

I just want the glitches to get patched so we can unlock Loki's Horns and so Trites don't get foolishly lodged in the upper-left corner.

So I've been grinding Ultra Hard for a few days. I've learned two things:

- If I get a Book of Revelations / Satanic Bible, I will not get any damage items.
- If I happen to get some damage going, there will be no health items and I suffer a death by thousand cuts.

I've never been stuck like this in Isaac. I've had a few deep runs and some mildly promising ones, which I quit because slogging through the later floors with the basic damage is the opposite of fun. The whole "challenge" is, really. The only good thing about this is that the rest of the stuff (Delirium runs with Judas/Isaac/someone, something else) is going to feel like a cakewalk.

Ultra Hard sucks. My biggest problem is you can't ever see the map and when combined with being teleported to other rooms thanks to curse of the maze it's just a massive exercise in frustration as you have literally no idea of your bearings at times.

I found Ultra Hard to be a walk in the park compared to SPEED! and BRAINS!.
I did it in my first try.

I was dreading April's fool. I hate the Bloat so much for the no tell brimstone shots with the fucked up horizontal hitbox and doing the fight with low items/ hp gave me anxiety.

Pyro was my first item. 6-8 bombs later and the first one was dead.

Midas was my second treasure room item. Along the way I got counterfeit penny.

Well.. by the end of the game I was a perpetual font of money which meant I had a never ending supply of soul/black hearts and 10-12 gold hearts at any given moment and max coins/bombs/keys. Without even gunning for it I ended up with 19 luck. I probably could have capped it out.

Once you beat the first floor, April's Fool is an extremely easy challenge. With all the gold hearts you'll be getting, you're essentially immortal.

By the middle of the run I was killing enemies by face rushing them and letting the Black Hearts kill them because I'd get them right back.

I was just browsing the thread and this post made me curious about April's Fool, since I hadn't tried it yet. Wound up with Dr. Fetus, Ipecac and Mutant Spider by the third floor with 10 black/gold hearts and just demolished the rest of the run.

That was fun.

I think the only way April's Fool is ever difficult is if you haven't unlocked gold hearts yet.

You can get one of those first floors with no consumables which happen on occasion. If so, April Fools is hard.

I agree with the earlier comment that once you get past the first floor it's easy. If you can beat the Bloat once, you are probably off and running.

My first crash on the Switch. Of course it was when I was coming off a 10 loss streak

Ludovico + Incubus + Death's Touch + Cricket's body proved to be too much tear spam for Satan :(

Edit: 20/20 and Bookworm too

I did it in my first try.

I've used Speed-run strats for Speed, and it's never taken me more than a couple of real runs. Basically, restart until you find an item speed runners start with:
Mom's Knife
Tech .5
Tech X
Dr Fetus
Epic Fetus
Double Shot
Magic Mushroom
Cricket's Head
Ipecac
Proptosis

Judas Shadow - Polyphemus - Monstro's Lung - Quad Shot - Cricket's Body - Jacob's Ladder if you start getting desperate. Probably a couple more I can't think of. Obviously skipping things like the Knife or Ipecac if you aren't super familiar with them, especially given the speed up.

Comparitively, since you can't see what you are picking up Ultra Hard is always a crapshoot, because even if you get one of those items the next item room may have Isaac's Heart or Strange Attractor.

I'm a noob to TBOI though I consider myself decent enough for a player with just a couple of weeks experience, but I just can't get my head around Greed mode. I keep accidentally hitting the switch when I don't want to and it is annoying the fuck out of me.

I found it easier, man. I hate being under pressure :(.
Anyway, I got all the chevos last week. So now I can enjoy the game to its fullest without worrying about achievements!

I was 30 cents away from capping the greed machine at 999.

This was my first run as Sampson.

Why the fuck, with the chances sill at 0%, did my greed machine break after 10ish coins? Did we really need decimal chances? Edmund come on.

You guys have inspired me to try April Fools again. I just got How to Jump in a library on the first floor, which is giving me a random effect everytime I use it. This could be fun.

I think they're adding more achievements with this booster pack

I wonder if they're gonna support Isaac until theyve done 12 booster packs or until its Janurary, cause its stinging that theyve promised monthly updates and only done almost 2 in 4 months :\

Someone asked Edmund that and he said he didn't really know at this point.

Nicalis is basically "Binding of Isaac and some other games" at this point, seems like they'd want to keep that cash cow going for as long as possible.

Man, how are they gonna call the last achievement now?
"Infinite% please, stop playing this game. You've wasted a lot of time that could have been used in better ways"

Unless they retro-actively add them to the AB+ completion achievement, I don't think these will count towards any completion percent achievement

Or they'll add one with the "final" booster and have that be the ultimate final completion mark

Today's best Ultra Hard attempt gave me the Satanic Bible, Holy Mantle and some minor damage upgrades.

And then Soy Milk.

I got to Mega Stan but I'm badly out of practice with him and couldn't do it. Still progress, I guess.

Had an all-time first happen after hundreds of hours of Isaac in an Eve Greed run today... my Catacombs Devil Deal offered up an Insta-Cat smorgasbord of Guppy's Head, Guppy's Hairball and Guppy's Tail. Went from zero Guppy pieces to cat instantly. Those pesky red hearts were keeping my Whore from kicking in so I didn't want them anyhow.
