July 2017 NPD (U.S. Hardware) Predictions - Closes Tuesday, August 8th

Damn. After increases Japan saw for Switch hw I expected much better supply in US too for July. Switch again screwed my prediction.

July was 4 weeks compared to Junes 5 weeks. So Weekly supply on average was up ~25% compared to June.

215k in 5 weeks -43k/w
222k in 4 weeks -55.5k/w

Underwhelming for Splatoon 2, I expected it to open better than MK8D due to longer period/more switch owners.

In terms of the Switch just shows that Nintendo concentrated the supply to Japan for the Splatoon 2 launch. There was slightly more supply for NA but not the type of jump we've seen in Japan.

Maybe we see decent digital sales for this one. I'm curious on that front.

Numbers has been leaked few hours ago :p

Hardware:
NSW: 222K
PS4: 217K (+34.7%)
3DS: 105K (-44.3%)

Software:
PS4: 2299K (+52.0%)
NSW: 736K
3DS: 384K (-49.2%)

Splatoon 2 #1 332k

Great HW result for both Switch and PS4. Not a very good debut for Splat 2.

Not surprised at the US numbers for Splatoon 2 to be honest. Amazon still has the game circling around the low 20's in the best seller list for 2017. That and combine the fact that Splatoon was always bigger in Japan, I don't really see anyway anyone could have expected it to do better then MK or Zelda.

Still, Switch is number 1 and the software numbers are pretty fabulous.

And people called me crazy when I said Switch is going to have a difficult time later this fall if they can't get these shipments in order.

I'm really curious why leak only part of the numbers? That seems odd. Maybe XB1 actually won and they are waiting for Microsoft's PR?

Because Media Create? I guess Nintendo focused more in Japan stocks than US this time even so looks like US saw a increase in shipment per week.

Yup, Japan needed the consoles for Splatoon 2. USA will need them for Odyssey and Black Friday/holidays.

I don't care it's number 1. That's debut is not good imo.

I think it's a decent debut. Splatoon still isn't a household name outside Japan. It should likely continue to sell well through the rest of the year though. I imagine the four big Switch games this holiday season will be Zelda, Mario Kart, Splatoon, and Odyssey. Maybe FIFA and Skyrim as well.

Well yeah....you can't sell what you can't produce. That's not really saying anything.

Expectations were higher though. I was thinking about at least 500--600k. Legs will be good so yeah , not a big deal.

How much did Splatoon 1 sell in May and June 2015?

136,000 in May 2015.

290,000 in June 2015.

Nintendo said it sold 455,000 copies by the end of June, so I'm not sure if those May numbers are accurate. The June numbers definitely are, as they came from Nintendo. I think the May numbers don't include digital (they're from Creamsugar).

Are those percentages YoY? PS4 seems like a huge increase in a normally quiet period. Likely explanation?

Not a very impressive debut for Splatoon 2 frankly. Following what hasn't been an exactly stellar performance in the UK either.

Not saying its a failure by any means but it seems it isnt exactly taking off in the West

Surprised to see Splatoon's numbers. Anecdotal I know, but I personally knew 3-4 people who bought a Switch for that game alone, and another 3-4 friends who bought the game after already owning the system. None were particularly big on the first one. On the other hand, I only know 3-4 other people with Mario Kart and they already owned the game on Wii U. Curious to see digital numbers.

Interesting numbers .
To bad we not get XB1 numbers .
I guess Sony expect to sell less PS4 this Nov and Dec or this could be PS4 peak year in the USA.

What are the numbers for PS4 per year ?

Splatoon 2 numbers are fine. They just aren't as spectacular as Zelda/Mario Kart 8 DX numbers were.

Exactly, Splatoon isn't Mario Kart. One has HUGE pull across all variety of gamers, the other is a relatively new and quirky shooter title.

Ppl crapping on Splatoon 2 performance forget It could have done around 400k with digital, which is 20-25% attach rate. People who bought switch at launch for a single player title like Zelda aren't guaranteed to like multiplayer titles (MK is an exception to this rule imo), so on a small userbase (well ~1.75m) i think that's fine in NA so far.

I did pretty well with PS4 number but Switch number fucked me again.

Were there any promotions or something?
Yes, but I believe it was very short lived and I don't know of any promo last month. PS4's library this year though...it's not quite PS2 level but it is insane N-sane.

Note that worldwide, Splatoon 2 assuredly broke the million on first week, on a userbase of 5-5.5 millions. That's a great performance.
EDIT : it probably did 1.5M in July actually (so 9 days), since it sold 753.411 units in Japan, 332k in US (total of 1.085M), probably another 200k in Europe (completely pulled out of my ass for that one), toss it a 10% digital ratio and we're not far off.

I'm curious to the other software that sold well on the Switch this month. If you take away the S2 numbers from the total software sold, it still leaves more then 400k sold units of software.

I'd say Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the obvious second game responsible, BotW after that and then... ARMS?

What game is being bundled with Switch in US?

Sounds about right.
