PewDiePie calls someone a "fucking n****r" during PUBG livestream

I don't mean this in a bad way I'm genuinely curious. Since 2011 half your posts have been made in this topic here today. On a gaming forum, has no topic caught your interest at all for five years, but is being able to say the n-word so important to discuss that you've posted more now than ever?

I'm just trying to understand a pattern.

No pattern, I don't come here often and I stumbled on this thread randomly and didn't understand what I perceived to be crazy ott reactions. He sucks for saying that, but idk, he seems remorseful to me.

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.

I don't come here often, but I just happen to need to defend my boy Pewdiepie. Of course.

I already gave you examples what he just did this year.

Remorseful after selling Hitler beard T-Shirts.
Remorseful after doing a "Death to all Jews" shtick.
Remorseful after dressing himself up as a (perceivable) Nazi.
Remorseful after doing rape jokes.
Remorseful after doing "Hitler did nothing wrong" memes....

Apology seems fine to me, but I'm not emotionally invested in him one way or another.

Apology was pretty ass man.

It's a clear "I'm sorry i got caught and that people are making a big enough deal about this that i have to respond" apology

He literally starts the video off deflecting by trying to minimize what he did by lumping himself into the crowd of people who use such language all the time. He then says that he feels disgusted to now be part of that crowd. Disgusted? Really? He didn't look very disgusted with himself after he said the word and for the rest of the livestream.

He then goes on to take one of the many capes his defenders have been throwing at him and he tries to hide behind the 'While what i said is inexcusable, allow me to excuse it away by saying I'm not racist, i'm just dumb blah blah blah heat of the moment' argument.

The funny thing is, the crux of where the apology should have been aimed at is the very thing that he purposefully avoids: dissecting why he said it in the first place. Had he showed even the slightest bit of contrition and said that he's not sure why that was the first thing that came out his mouth and that it's made him examine himself and try to tackle the implicit biases that he's harboring that would make such a derogatory term so readily available in his mind, it would still ring a bit hollow but it'd be a fuckton better than all this hot air he was blowing here

yes, I watched that. He said "nigga" in a comedic context. Not even close to the same thing. I say nigga with my black friends. I guess I just have some chill friends. I'm willing to bet the most outraged people here are white.

Your avatar suits you, child. Maybe curbing your immaturity might do you some good in life.

Can you respond to this?

Depends on the company and context, yeah. When there's no malice involved and there's mutual respect it's not a big deal from my experience. I wouldn't say nigga to a stranger and don't make a habit of it, but once in awhile I will with a friend and I get a laugh. Context and meaning are key.

Is it also okay to say it if you have a streaming audience of 50+ million people with a large portion of them CHILDREN?

Is it still okay to jokingly say it then?

I wonder how long you will keep defending this shit.

I thought that was a decent apology.

I really expected him to explain it away or try to downplay it even further.

I said that in France when we use the word it's a friendly-way not a bad way, but if someone use it in a bad way, ok that's racist, but i said in french that Pewdiepie say it to nobody, so it can't be offended because he say that to a game

You being French and stupid doesn't make the later ok because of the former. Your friends playfully tossing the word around and being fine with it still doesn't make it ok contextually, morally, socially, wherever actually.

A white person using the word fully understanding its racist, deeply negative meaning (substituting it for "asshole" moments later), even if targeted at nobody, doesn't make it ok - he's got an audience he's influential with, and he's casually using racist vocabulary "for fun" which diminishes the gravitas of said racist vocabulary for that audience. It does lead to people thinking it's "ok to use that word" because, you know "it's not in a bad way", when of course it's not ok to use a racist word or use racist stereotypes for fun. Simply because it reinforces those stereotypes, taking the edge off racist fucks in one fell swoop, and because it continuously mocks a population that's been the butt of way too many of "history's harmless little jokes".

You being French, Portuguese, Inuit or whatever has literally zero input in the matter. It's as irrelevant as the brand of your underwear to this subject. "Négro", in French, is as racially abusive and loaded as the English equivalent. That you, or anybody you know, enjoy using it between yourselves without feeling its weight doesn't change the fact that it is, in nature, in proven fact, a pejorative, racist way of addressing you or your friends. Regardless of the culture you might think you're emulating that does the same sort of reappropriation (and where the use of the word is still hotly debated), you are using an insult as a way to address yourselves. And you are free to so, as other are free to criticize and mock you for it.

You do with that what you will, but do not mistake your lack of understanding for a language issue. You're missing the point, not the translation.

Wanna make it clear I'm not defending (or hating PDP).

I think what he did was shitty but it's not a clear "he is a racist". The same thing happened to Maximilian earlier this year and people really shat on him for that.

You can't really hate Boogie but he often adds nothing to the discussion. The way people are addressing Boogie even on here is pretty disgusting.

Note what you did here:

What PDP did is just "shitty", but not racist. What other people did in the thread in discussing someone's dismissive reaction to the use of a racist slur is "pretty disgusting".

At best, you've equated people discussing someone's absurd reaction to racism to the racist act itself. You wanna talk about "pretty disgusting"? This is it.

Having some black friends that Let you say it doesn't give you carte blanche to use the word in any context. They don't speak for all people of color. Also, I bet you they're not cool with it. They're probably uncomfortable with speaking up.

Also, as a person of color; if I heard you say it I'd slap the shit outta you.

Well I know for a fact they don't take offense. It was never uncomfortable laughter and it was just a passing moment in conversation full of all kinds of joking around. If my friends didn't like it they'd say something. They are not shy. I would never say that to you or anybody that was uncomfortable with it. I can only speak to my personal experience.

Heat of the moment / it slipped out

Decent apology?

Where is his stance on condemning those who perpetuate his jokes on twitter/youtube etc?

He's the biggest youtuber out there so he should be more firm in his convictions to condemn it.

His apology only means something if he learns from it. He's apologized before for dumb shit and went right on doing it.

Let me know when he sincerely evolves. Otherwise, I don't want to hear any apologies. Change your ways or go extinct.

He apologized, and I forgive him, but certainly will not forget.

I do not have room in my heart to cast him off to subhuman status, but I also don't think apology should make it ok to go back to watching his videos.

This has made it pretty clear to me that on a subconscious level he is maybe unintentional but certainly complicit with racism.

The Nazi stuff was pretty foolish, but there was a pretty clear argument to be made about context and there was sensationalism and smear campaign to drag him down without a doubt.

This was a very poor choice because it is nearly impossible to justify what he did.

Again, I forgive him, but he probably should not be a public media figure with this patterned behavior.

I had a friend who was a giant fuck up. Always acting like an idiot but then would pitch an apology about how he needed to get better and would try harder. Everyone always forgave him becauae despite being a shit he was likeable.

After one of his most recent fuck ups he did the same song and dance about getting better. Fed up I asked him, "How are you going to get better? What the fuck are you actually gonna do to improve yourself?" His response was, I dunno, I havent really thought about it.

Me and this dude are not friends anymore. Because he's a lost cause.

This is the exact same way I feel about PewDiePie. Time for talk is over. Give an action plan about how you are gonna stop being trash. Dont say nice things. Give concrete plans and do them.

As a black man who is not a fan of pewdepie and slammed him and his followers earlier in this thread you damn sure aren't going to tell me how I should feel about his apology.

Im not telling you how you should feel and I'd appreciate if you don't do this policing to me either.

In no way does this excuse his behavior. I just said I thought the apology was decent. Chills

In his apology video he should have called out the fans and people defending his use of the word. That would have made it more sincere and shown his disgust.

lol, I never liked Pewdiepie. His catch phrase is a poor rip off of Mr. Hanky from South Park and I never found him remotely funny or entertaining. I always wondered how he got so damn huge. It doesn't make sense really, but in a world ruled by Kardashians anything is possible I guess.

Dude I'm NOT telling you how to feel.

I'm telling you he did "explain it away".

If you feel he was sincere and he will try to better himself, fine.

I look at his past behaviour combined with this leads me to believe he is a shitheel.

Hello !
I'm French and i don't understand why people are so angry about this word, because in French we have a n-word for black people, a b-word for white people and a b-word for arabic people and sometimes people use it but there's no problem with this ?

What are you talking about?
I'm French as well and there's a big difference between "Noir" for "Black" and "Nègre" = "Nigger", or "Beur" for "Arabic" and "Bougnoul" = "sand-nigger / dirty arab?", etc.
You can't call someone a "nègre" or a "bougnoul." in France and not expect at least the same amount of outrage from people.

Answer what? I don't know what you mean. Please repeat the question.

Dunky defended PewdeePie to?

I mean, he's used the word himself in at least one video, so, probably??

I challenge anyone to write an apology that would please everyone on GAF.

"No one wants to think of themselves as a racist, but clearly my actions as of late have suggested otherwise. I need to take some time to find out where this is coming from, and try to work on becoming a better person. I'm deeply sorry for all of the hurt I've caused, and the damage I've done."

It's really not that fucking hard.

It's pretty obvious that he's not sincere whatsoever. It was just something to appease advertisers and not alienate his racist fanbase.

Your explaining to me why I shouldn't be able to say the apology was decent. I hate this stuff. I am on your side and I agree with you. This doesn't excuse his behavior and I NEVER SAID IT DID.

As a bruva, you accept wack ass apologies.

It's our lot of being the butt of this kind of joke.
If we were in a sitcom, this would be the time that people start to complain that the black dude is bad for not accepting the shitty apology.
By the end of the episode we'll see the brother offer his own apology to the shithead because everyone is dogging him for that.
Shithead will fuck up just before end credits.
