last game you gave up on

what's the last game any of you guys or gals gave up on? i don't mean a game you tried once and stopped playing, i mean a game you put considerable time into only to shelve for one reason or another

for me its hollow knight - the difficulty along with the basic combat system, currency system, charm system and backtracking made the game a slog to play after several hours, which is a shame because i really enjoyed the world that was presented to me

Tried to Global, was stuck at LEM, didn't play for some weeks due to Job change and moving to another city. I tried playing the game again, all my skill was gone, my team didn't want to play with me anymore. So after 2000 hours of my lifetime I realized I don't want the play it no more.

Yakuza. Yes i started with Kiwami and i know that's kind of blasphemous to fans and that i should've started with Zero...

But the reason i quit is because brawlers just bore me. It's just mindlessly beating up a bunch of meaningless goons until you beat up a meathead boss and then you learn a new combo and repeat.

Especially as it felt like every 2 mins i would get ambushed by a bunch of dickheads and had to have a mandatory fight before moving on another 20ft before another encounter, Ugh.

Think it's got to be The Division 2 for me. I played a good three to four hours and I could not bring myself to continue forward. I wasnt having any fun one bit. A shame too as I quite enjoyed the first and have always been fond of the Tom Clancy brand.

Dragon quest builders 1. I spent so much time before the first boss fight building up my base and making protections to have it all mean nothing after the fight. You get moved to another location and have to start from scratch again. That bugged me so much I just didn’t want to do it again. Especially four more or so times.

Tears of Nintendo
Sekiro, made it to the two apes and gave up.
Same here back when the game came out and that's in Hirata Estate and before I even met Lady Butterfly, so basically at the very beginning of the game.

And now it's one of my favorite games this year, one of the best games of this year too and I love this game far more than any Dark Souls game I've payed.

If this is not a perfect example of how can one game can really put you off and win you over a thousand times back when you give it another chance, I don't know what else is.

So I'd say you should give Sekiro another chance ;)

I really want to like it but something about it makes it a chore to play. I've dropped it once before, came back to it but dropped it again. Maybe someday i'll actually finish it since i only need 1 more divine beast but man, i have to force myself to play it so i dunno

Bravely Second on 3DS, sequel for Bravely Default. Kinda a spritiual successor for classic 2D FF with god tier turn based gameplay.

Basically I got burnt on binging long ass JRPG, I just stopped one day. I’ll come back later though.

A game that I'd like to call LIFE.

I entered the thread to say Hollow Knight too. Everything you said + the game isn't difficulty at all. With the exception of bosses it's near impossible to die because enemies always drop mana that can used to restore health.

Played 70-80% of it I think.

I don't remember but it was either Life is Strange or Limbo. Both very flawed games (for obviously different reasons) and both extremely overrated.

gave up on Arkham Knight pretty early into it, bringing in the batmobile was a big mistake

Just about to post the same thing. Plus I'm totally sick of the Joker.

Sekiro, which is a true shame. I do love difficult games, in spite of my crappy reaction times and slow ways of learning attack patterns, etc, but I just couldn't seem to be good enough - even after a few hours doing the same thing.

I think the one hard game I managed to be truly successful at was Hollow Knight, as metroidvania titles seem to mesh better with me. Really looking forward to Silksong.

Like the OP, Hollow Knight.

Loved the art and ambience but came to one too many ‘I’ve gotta go back there? Again?’ moments, and just couldn’t be arsed anymore.
I did the same, for the same reason. Also gave up on Arkham Knight. And I binned Red Dead 2 after 8 hours or so. I think that is the most recent one. Christ, the controls in that game are garbage.

La-Mulana 2. Got very far but eventually ran out of leads and patience and had to admit defeat. Still love the game and got everything I wanted out of it though.

Very few. I force myself through even games I don't love, because it will drive me crazy if I don't.

Fucking LIFE! Why is it always on hard mode???

But seriously, Diablo 3. I just kinda got bored of it after about 10 hours.

Smash Ultimate too. I don't even like Smash but I keep buying the games for some reason.

Cuphead. So boring. The graphics were its only redeeming factor. As a shooter it was terrible. It's like the run n gun version of Rise of the Robots.

feel like i am in a give up/come back to it in a week cycle with Nioh. cool game, just way too long and prone to get absurdly frustrating at points.

I gave up on Nioh its an amazing game but I got to a point where i just realized brutal games have to take a back seat for a while, life is too insane for me atm just to finally get home and beat my head against a wall due to a tough boss fight.

I didnt even buy seirko because I dont want to spend money on a game that ends up taking a lot of time to learn and master when I only have a few hours a week to play.

Yakuza Kiwami and 0
I was beginning to think I was done with the series. I've played 3-5 (including Dead Souls) and had a great time, but neither 0 nor Kiwami really grabbed me. I think I was getting tired of Kamurocho. Ended up skipping 6 too.

That said, the new battle system in the new Yakuza might be enough for me to jump back in.

Smash Ultimate too. I don't even like Smash but I keep buying the games for some reason.
It's easy to get caught up in the 'hype' because of all the Nintendo fans doing free marketing up to release. I did once and then made the note to never trust hype from Nintendo fans again.

W40K Mechanicus. Such an overrated boring game. It pisses me off that a nice lore like the Adeptus Mechanicus is being wasted on the most repetitive TBS I've ever played. I don't understand the positive buzz about the game...

Devil May Cry 5. Short answer: it is simply not for me. Slightly longer answer: The story, the characters, the voice acting and the gameplay itself annoyed the hell out of me.

I was playing Mario + Rabbids KIngdom Battle and got about 6 levels in with no real complaints, but then Wargroove came out and I dumped it like a ton of bricks.

I agree. I put 60 hours in on WiiU, then tried again a year later on Switch. One divine beast left, I just have no more will to suffer this game. You have total freedom to go anywhere and suffer any trite, boring, pointless task that you want. I'm hoping the next one has dungeons, or something.

Smash Ultimate too. I don't even like Smash but I keep buying the games for some reason.

I've bought every installment of Smash since N64 and love the series, but Ultimate is only a multiplayer game to me. I remember grinding through Melee's 51 event matches with an iron will, but we've come a long way since then. Ultimate's single player content feels rushed and boring. I'm glad you don't need it to unlock all the characters.

I gave up on Cuphead, too. Just because I cannot beat the damn dice guy. It's impossible for me.

I played it for a while, gave up because of the difficulty, but one day a bunch of friends come over. I loaded it up, and we played it taking turns. I'm telling you this, because that way we learned from each other and we completed a few stages (actually, it was mostly me) that I though i will never be able to complete before.

I rarely give up on games because I'm a discerning buyer and just don't buy it if I'm not truly interested (aka the scourge of modern publishers).

That said, Iconoclasts was the last game I gave up on. The story was pish and overwritten. Gameplay wasn't much fun either.

Fire Emblem Three Houses.

I hate running around the stupid monastery asking around for who dropped their item. The persona inspired relationships stuff isn’t interesting at all to me, while it didn’t bother me in those games. Over half the game is that and I hate it here.

Absolute chore of a game. I just want to do battles and have some light story.

It’s on my shelf and I’ll try again down the road sometime.

Shadow of War. It just became a bit tedious. Also, it felt more like Shadow of Mordor 1.5 rather than a proper sequel.

+1 to Sekiro. I gave it my best, but I just found it too hard. No hard feelings towards the game, as there are plenty of gamers who had no problems with it.

Shadow of War after 12 hours.

It was so amazing going into a fortress with your orc army. First one you basically get for free (cutscene). Second fortress, you have to defend the master. But you leave your 500 orc army outside which is OK because you want a fair one vs one. But he has 10-11 buddies with him who are respawning infinitely. Then you take quite some time to take him down just so he "avoids death" and you have to beat him again.

Which was ok once. But in the third castle, the same shit happened again. Boring, grindy gameplay. A shame because the game was pretty good up until then.

Also I never got warm with the story (never got with the first one either) despite being a huge LOTR fan.
