Meta Quest 3 releases on October 10.

The Fucking MAN.
I've never decided to watch a whole movie on it (honestly, because wife would throw something at me for locking myself in the headset all evening instead of watching one together), but it's very fun to view YouTube on a massive screen--or Netflix, or anything streamed on your local computer if you install Virtual Desktop.

I hear that there's also a wealth of educational content out there but can't speak to it.

Of course a cinephile eye would be bothered by the resolution on Q2, but Q3's resolution is probably just enough to get over that limitation for most users.

I watched the entire INGLORIOUS BASTERDS last nite on Quest 2 cause my kid lost my glasses and I wanted to sit on the couch as opposed to too close to tv or at my computer screen.

It was great! In the past I've never really liked it and I dunno if something changeD or maybe the movie is just that good (it is), but using the prime video VR app in Quest 2 was super enjoyable and it really was great to see that movie on the 'big screen' again.

The other day I was playing with mixed reality with the Quest 2 (which is 'eh' just cause IRL renders in pixel black and white, which won't be an issue with Quest 3) and I had this GIANT portal on the side of my living room wall and that was showing a real time 3D environment (forest, tranquil, etc.) while everywhere else was just my home (I could see family, the dog, into the kitchen, etc.) and it was AMAZING! I do not think there is a mixed reality youtube player or movie player for Quest 2 but I imagine with Quest 3 there will be one and that is the reason I plan on getting it day 1.

tl;dr- turns out this image is not hyperbole but real. And you can get a sample now on Quest2 and it looks to be amazing on Quest3.

Debating getting the 512 gig version. Everyone was saying they never filled up their 64gig one. I did and it was annoying swapping out games. Looks like Asgards Wrath 2 is around 25 gigs. Seems like 512 is the move.
I also think it's worth getting the 512gb. Games are gonna get bigger. 128gb is more like 114gb free space because of the system requirement anyway. Medal of Honour for example is the biggest game at 45gb I believe.

Am I just gonna waste my time waiting for Deckard? Gonna be hard to resist Quest 3 with pancake lenses.

Can’t wait to read peoples impressions on neogaf. Bye bye narrow sweet spots of fresnels and the impressions of the Quest 3 optics is that it’s top notch

Honestly I would buy a Quest 3 just to play I Expect You to Die 4

This series is seriously underappreciated. The puzzles are fun and make you think, the art direction and music is stellar, and the stories get better with every game. I Expect You to Die 3: Cog in the Machine is honestly my favorite VR game and I would love to see what Schell Games can do with more graphical and processing power.

How good are these without connecting at all to a PC?

Can I buy a bunch (3-5) of them and play multiplayer across each without needing any computers?

They're standalone wifi-enabled devices, so yes, you could have multiplayer sessions with multiple headsets. Just want to be careful about physical proximity to other people depending on what you're playing.

thats all nice and all but what are the games?
where are the system sellers?

alyx is still the pinnacle of vr. where is the next gen big vr game that needs the quest 3?

i still got my quest 1 and want to upgrade really badly because i like new tech, but what can i play that will blow my socks off?

is it still only beat saber and some shitty cartoon games?

Nah please don’t buy it at all.

Thanks, what’s the benefits of hooking it up to a PC? Does it work the same without?

You can play your PCVR games if you connect it to your PC, and those games will be rendered by your PC rather than the headset. So you can play stuff like Half Life Alyx without buying a PCVR setup like the Valve Index. You'd just need to pick up the game on Steam and connect your Quest.

As a standalone device you can play games designed for the Quest running on its onboard graphics. The Quest 3 is reasonably strong but not comparable to a high end gaming PC.

You can play PCVR games (Steam VR for example). They are rendered on PC and have all bells and whistles (like mods). But it have it's own downsides, we need to wait for reviews to know if it's any better than on Q2. However Q3 seems like having a very powerful mobile graphics so it definitely now not THAT important. I personally used Q2 only with PC because of graphics.

This is gonna be an amazing piece of hardware for 500$. Much better specs than what we thought..

Bigger FOV than Q2, pancake lens, better clarity, better sweet spot, automatically scanning obsticles, dual lenses etc.

The clarity of pancake lens, sweet spot and passthrough is amazing

So, how would this compare to PSVR2 if I would use it for PCVR games? I really don't mind playing wired, and I've got an RTX 3080 + Ryzen 9 5900X.

I'm only interested in PCVR, not the standalone stuff.

Hardware seems decent although expensive. I'm just jaded as fuck now by the usual VR fare, hard for me to get excited to play more of it with better lenses and improved graphics. Asgard's is a step in the right direction but not enough.

3 year lifespan, launch bundle game already 25GB. I ordered 512.

Nice, I hope it's a good headset! I'll be watching impressions myself. Curious, what other headsets have you owned? Sounds like you've done it once or twice before? Already played in Alyx VR?

Oculus devkits, HTC Vive, Quest 2.

Have not played Alyx yet unfortunately! Gaming PC in storage while I'm in school.

Wish it had a 256gb tier in the middle. I'm fundamentally against it going the Apple route of charging 200CAD for 8 dollars of NAND and a few dollars of integration lol, but without storage expansion there's no choice...

Yeah, it's one of those annoying pricing strategies to market it at $499 but cripple the storage artificially unless you opt for the other model. Such is the life of a consumer though.

The 500Gig model also gives you 6 months of the meta game pass or whatever it's called. Feels like the added $50 was just for the "free trial".
I kind of want that 500Gig though, if the sideloading bug hits me.

How does everyone feel about this vs. the PSVR2?
I have owned Quest 2 for a long while. invested lots of time in PCVR etc. I bought PSVR2 at launch because I love VR in general. I feel the versatility of the Quest whether it be wirelessly via PCVR or local Quest games Is a lot better experience. If I had to have one, it would be the Quest. PSVR2 still feels niche. It's not supported enough and Sony seem to have lost momentum.

I have a Rift S, it was really cool for a while. The ACVR game looks absolutely great and made me feel like buying one - but I am afraid it will collect dust like the S.

I had a shot of Q3. It’s a massive step up from Q2. Clarity, zero screen door, much better blacks. The visuals were fantastic.
Hmmm, the incoming reports are very contradictory 🤷‍♂️
  • FOV and blacks are identical to Q2 - vs. significantly improved
  • no perceivable difference in weight - vs. Q3 feels lightweight like Oculus Go
  • passthrough is fantastic - vs. grainy like an old mobile camera
  • some people report random white pixels blinking in the peripheral view - apparently, an unfixed bug brought over from Q2
Hmmm...

They will no doubt introduce 256gb a year or two later, while discontinuing the 128gb

Way too expensive for me. I got quest 2 because i wanted to play half-life alyx and try vr.
It was a good entry point. The cost of the switch to get in.

I bought it xmas time 2020 , it was the only device to get as everything else had sold out. Then a year or two later they did $100 price increase. Never before have I seen a price increase on a system. Crazy.

I then did the pc plug in with cord but found out you can do virtual desktop wireless and still play pc games, without a cable.
Also got to put old pc classics on this sucker, hl1, quake 1-2, doom, rtcw, all done with proper controls and they were native to quest ,just had to copy my purchased base game files over to it. Could play it without the pc setup.
Got some good games like beat sabers, Resident evil, walking dead, and my favorite RACKET NX. Was fun single player and multiplayer.

$500 entry is too much and I bet it will disuade a lot of people from buying. Why offer quest 2 for affordable prices and not this? They need to get more people on board. I don't get it.
Unless they plan to keep selling the quest 2 and lower the price. Then lower the price of quest3 when the 4 comes out. Yet I doubt they will do this. It makes too much sense to have multiple skus.
As much as I give MS crap for monopoly buyouts, at least they had good sense to offer a cheaper console. In the era of inflation and too expenseive everything, its not smart to launch something too pricey.

Probably falls in middle but still a plus in every way. I know for FOV many were using smaller face guards to increase Quest 2s, people who used quest 3 don't have those yet. Stock for stock, I'm betting quest 3 is more noticeable.

The two huge things that are consistent are the Pancake lenses being a massive step up and the new chip set.

Went over to Best buy this morning as I need to pick up something.

The had a Quest 3 on display. One could not try it out or anything but you could see what it looks like as well as the controllers.

But, they had another unit next to it with the head strap removed. A extendable cable was attached to it and you could put it up to your face a try out the color pass thru.

I gotta say it looked pretty damn good. It also showed some graphics over layed on top. Diplays and the lenses looked pretty damn sharp.

I have to say I am even more hyped now. Obviously just a very slight taste but seems to taste pretty good at the moment.

I wear glasses so I was able to test the fit. If ones fit in the Quest2, there should be no issue. Mine are fairly wide. The edges of my glasses just graze the facial shield. I could pull it off without the glasses coming off at the same time.
Glasses with Quest 2 was awful. I got lenses for that and I have them on order for Quest 3 as well. Once you play without glasses on it’s a different experience. Night and day more immersive.

Prices for this thing here in Sweden are pure garbage. 8900kr for the 512gb version. That’s like 2000kr extra compared to the superior psvr2 including the call of the mountain.

Yes I know it works standalone as well with mobile graphics but the price is really really high. Really have to think about buying it. Also, many accessories like straps and the like are more expensive than actual controllers like wtf.

2 straps for the controllers, 750kr. Charging station 1800kr lolol. Those prices are unreal 😢.

Such an exciting year for VR fans. Honestly, VR is a far, far more compelling way to play games (for example, Village was surreal, much better than flat imo) and I hope Quest 3 succeeds and surpasses Quest 2 in terms of sales.

Also, highly curious Valve's supposed next VR since the latests rumours about Deckard (PC box + headset)! But also sounds expensive for someone without a good PC like me.

There’s so many factors for nausea, i don’t think anyone could answer you except for try it and refund if it doesn’t work out.

I doubt you’ll suddenly won’t be sick, it’s not like the foundation of the technology had a paradigm shift.

Given the inflation since 2020 alone it’s really not that much more expensive. The accessories are a bit ridiculous but the headset itself really isn’t. I’m guessing you also think $70 is too much for a video game but they stayed at $60 for a decade and a half.

They also need to push the tech forward and that means better hardware. Hardware costs money. Compared to Apple’s $3500 mixed reality headset the Quest 3 is a relative bargain.

I’m sorry you feel it’s too expensive for you but cutting edge tech (and Q3 is a big jump from Q2) always comes at a premium. And in terms of sales I bet this does 2x what the Quest 2 did in its lifetime.

(Unless meta fucks over Quest 3 buyers like they did OG Quest)

Not to mention we didn't get a $60 pack in game with Quest 2.

I think the price is worth it. The Quest 2 chip at launch was good, but this new for mobile is closer to great or even outstanding for the current timeframe. Not to mention MR is a whole new option for gaming that wasn't viable with Quest 2 at all.

The worst part is Zuckercuck revealed about a year ago that they'd spent 4 or 5 billion on software since Quest 2's release (so a 2 year timeframe). That's enough money to fund 50 HL Alyx's. Yet all they managed to release was a Gamecube port, a handful of indie ass indies, and some Beatsaber song packs. Where exactly did that money go? The way Facebook vanishes billions of dollars into the ether is perhaps the most important business case study in human history. Spending 90+ billion specifically on VR R&D and releasing hardware that is par (and often worse) than their fractionally funded competitors with a couple dozen VR employees and 10s of millions of dollar budgets is even more egregious. 95% of their obscene expenditure must be spent salaring people who do literally nothing.

That’s good. I think for me if it even slightly reduces the feeling of looking through a ski mask, I’ll be happy. Not expecting any major difference, but a bit would be nice.

I don't expect you'll notice the difference and will have completely forgot about it the 2nd or 3rd time you don it. FOV is a wildly over rated spec. I routinely swap between an Index and Quest 1 (massive FOV reduction) to evaluate content and never miss or make note of the difference in practice. The display differences and Oculus Link compression (even wired) are 1000x more noticable. The pancake optics vastly larger focus eyebox and hopeful reduction in glare artifacts should be way more impactful than 10 or so horizontal degrees.

With Quest 3, Valve could do a native version of Alyx. I doubt they will because Valve being Valve (god, reminds me of Nintendo), but they could and i think it would give a new life to HL:A.
