New Super Mario Bros. 2 |OT| Coins!

Nah. Lives really serve no purpose other than to inconvenience and punish you arbitrarily for having a difficult time on a specific part of a level. If I'm having trouble on a specific series of jumps in a level, what good is it to send me back to redo several levels that I didn't have trouble with after a completely arbitrary number of attempts?

Because 'finishing the game' was once meant to be a singular challenge in its own right. Not that this particular argument applies to NSMB where 1ups are more of a minor reward than any vital source of difficulty alleviation.

Who the hell beat this in 4-6 hours?

I've put about 5 hours into it and I'm still only on world 2. I'm trying to find all the coins and the secret exits in the game before I move onto the next world.

World 2-4 actually took me SO long to find the second coin, I knew it was in that room with the gold ring and the goombas, but I fell down totally by accident. Once I found it, I felt so stupid!

Oh and sure, we don't play these games for the difficulty. But this is *without a doubt* the easiest Mario game I can remember off to the top of my head. Both of the Galaxy games, the recent 3D Land (especially in the later special worlds) and NSMB Wii all have a handful of levels that offer a considerable challenge if you're going for 100% completion. Absolutely not the case here. There really isn't much of an increase in difficulty, not even the last few secret levels offer any sort of interesting challenge. In fact, they're quite disappointingly straightforward.

You can definitely get to Bowser and beat him in 4ish hours, but what's the point indeed, if you consider the game to be over at that point? There's 2 to 3 optional levels per world, there's two whole optional worlds, each with their own optional/hidden levels, there's an additional secret world and there's all the star coins. You can probably skip over 50 % of the content and see the credits roll. Surely no one is silly enough to judge the game based on less than half of its content? ;)

Just finished it with 4:34 on my activity list. Now it's going back to GameStop!

Just kidding! I'm just getting started! The real game begins when you beat it! I'm going to go through and unlock every level and get all the star coins now.

I almost made it all the way through without seeing the white tanooki box. I died one too many times on Bowser, but I reset it just in case there was some kind of unlockable. I do have a shiny gold star by my file now.

I have 0012211 coins so far.

Maturity, bitches.
The weird thing about lives is how out of reach some of them are. You have a secret area in a game focused on coins and yet you are rewarded with lives. I suppose in coin rush these areas are worth noting since 1ups turned into 50 coin gold mushrooms.

where the hell is the second star coin in the first fortress on world 1?

I cannot find it for the life of me.

After the checkpoint,
go up and into the red pipe on the left. Hit the P-block and quickly climb up above the shifting blocks. There's another area above the screen. Normally there has coins, but with the P-block activated, the coins turn into bricks. Climb up the bricks to grab the star coin.

COINS COINS COINS OH GOD I AM DROWNING IN THEM

I haven't played the game yet. Doesn't interest me that much though the reviews seem to indicate it's a solid game.

I'm playing right now and not liking it. It's pretty much an updated version of NSMB DS in all senses, game looks pretty much the same. Yes, there's new implementions, but overall, it's the same game. 3DS capabilites could have been FAR MORE better exploited here, not only graphics-wise (for a 3DS game, graphics are outdated). Nintendo needs to be less lazy and easy money scrooge and put better effort on a really NEW Super Mario Bros next-time.

I'm enjoying this more than Super Mario 3D Land to be honest even though it doesn't have the same amount of creativity and is probably the most "play it safe" mario game I've ever played (as well as it not using the full power of the 3DS).

I've always liked 2D Mario more than 3D though (with the exception of Mario Galaxy in comparison to NSMB Wii). Better gameplay in my opinion.

After receiving and playing my copy for a little while today, I can say the depth of field is not nearly as bad as I expected for one sole reason: I never play at max 3D.

The amount of blur from the depth of field effect is directly proportional to the position of the 3D slider.

2D = crisp, unblurred backgrounds.
Max 3D = very blurry backgrounds.
50% or less on the 3D slider = a nice amount of 3D effect with backgrounds that are still fairly detailed and look nice.

Graphics aside, so far I'm really enjoying the game, but the one time I played Coin Rush so far I wasn't really feeling it.

I really hope DLC levels aren't only coin rush. I was really hoping a Mario game with DLC would be more akin to the e-Reader stuff in Super Mario Advance 4.

It's essentially a level pack with a mildly amusing gimmick and flying raccoon Mario. YMMV, I guess.

Who knows when we'll get a 2D Mario that really upends a tea table or three. I think NSMB U is going to be fantastic, but it's probably not that.

Iwata hinted earlier that there might be another 2D, non-"New" Super Mario game in the future, because they want to stick to 1 NSMB per platform. Or maybe there just won't be anymore 2D Marios altogether for 3DS and Wii U.

I hope so. Nintendo milked the hell out of the NSMB brand, it's time to push the 2D Mario games further. But knowing Iwata, the next 2D Mario will add little new stuff to the genre.

I'm pretty sure he meant 2D Mario as a whole, and that Shiggy is pretty adamant at keeping the one per platform ratio, like Mario Kart, so we won't be seeing another one after the Wii U version for a while. Hopefully this won't change even after Shiggy retires.

1 Per platform is milking now? And TBH, apart from things like power-ups and the like, what exactly can you really add to a 2D Mario game?

He probably means make a mario game that isn't a mario game, like yoshi's island or wario land.

Or maybe he means change nothing but the artstyle and suddenly it will be a good game in his eyes, but I doubt anyone would be that silly.

If you want a challenge then why are you playing modern mario games?

Outside of some of the special levels (green starts in Galaxy) there's almost no challenge.
Modern Mario games generally are as challenging as or more challenging than the classic Mario games. You're much more skilled than you were as a kid. Take a comparable game like SMB3. The biggest difference is that lives were more scarce so dying 10 times, instead of giving you the superguide option or making you have to go back to your last save point, could make you have to play the entire game over. That doesn't really make the game more challenging, the level you kept dying on is still the same. People would just farm lives to make it to the end. People get all nostalgic about SMW, but aside from a few levels like TUBULAR the game is super easy.

While I would love a new YI or Wario game, they're a very different type of game from the traditional 2D Marios.

Well according to some people they're slightly related to mario so they should be considered a mainline 2D mario title, just so they can complain that nintendo doesn't mix it up like they used to anymore.

I mean if we're going to count YI and WL as SMB games why not just go the whole hog and include DKC as well?

Played a bit more today, up to world 4
and beat mushroom world
. I'm still mostly digging it but there's something about the level design I can't place that rubs me the wrong way. The water level with the giant boulders and all the bloopers in world 3 is kind of the epitome of my problems with it - reminds me of something from DKC 1 or 3, and not in a good way. Feels like all sizzle and no steak. It's a shame since when the game feels like it it's pretty awesome

Better world map design (with lots of alternative routes and secret areas like Super Mario World and not linear the way NSMB games are), multiple ways of finishing a level (like some of SMW stages), item storage menu (SMB3-like), minigame stages with valuable itens as prizes, Luigi-only stages, Bowser being a playable character, Wario and Waluigi as villains/stage bosses or playable characters, riding Yoshi with a Yoshi's Island based gameplay, New Game+ mode (with exclusive new levels, characters and tougher challenge).

It's funny in a way because DKC probably has more similar gameplay to the Mario games than say Yoshi's Island. Next time we get one of those best 2D Mario platformer threads and someone wheels out Yoshi's Island i'm taking that as an acceptable cue to bring in DKC2, that game also has Mario and Yoshi in it (as small cameos) so yeah!

How come people go out of their way to give Yoshi's Island justification for being a mainline Mario title (which in itself does have some merit I wont deny) yet Yoshi's Story and Yoshi's Island DS are Yoshi games? and poor old Wario just gets outright shafted.

I like that people say yoshis island and wario land were examples of nintendo mixing it up instead of just doing mario, but then conveniently forget that Yoshi's Island Ds, Wario Land Shake it and stuff like Super Princess Peach happened.

About the world map design: I prefer the linear style of the NSMB games, atleast that way I'll actually play the majority of the levels.

And playable bowser? That's not super mario bros, that's super paper mario.

If you want to play a game with yoshi's island based gameplay... play yoshi's island.

New game+ is about the only thing you've listed which would actually change the game in a large way for me yet still actually feel like I'm playing super mario bros.

You're being subjective at best with this. You asked what I wanted to improve NSBM? You got my answer, if you don't like fine, but don't come with this "go play Super Paper Mario/Yoshi's Island" bullshit.

This is normally the assumption I would've made, but since it's a launch title, depending on the lifespan of Wii U, I could see them making another one.

It's certainly possible!

If this can be independently verified, I will kiss you on the mouth. Oh what a relief it would be to "be allowed to die."

Er... no need for that, unless you are cute single lass living in northern California... really, I insist.

Anyway, more specific details.

  • I beat the boss of world 6. ("Beat the game.")
  • My save file had a single, non-flashy/shiny/whatever star.
  • I found a level with a Assist Block (white raccoon) in it. I had never finished that level, and I must have died 5 times while attempting it during the initial playthrough.
  • I beat the level -using- the Assist Block.
  • I then replayed the level (now with no visible Assist Block) and beat it normally.
  • The star on my save file is now shining.

It looks like you can even recover from using a White Raccoon Mario to beat a level.

I'm seeing folks on the internet saying this ISN'T true, which makes me think that either there is a "limit" (which seems unlikely, given what happened to my game), or that those folks have OTHER levels they lost on 5 times.

The trick here is that once you've died 5 times, the level is flagged, even if you don't replay it and thus never see the Assist Block. It's quite possible to have multiple levels tagged with Assist Blocks but have no clue about it if you weren't keeping track of lives.

(Is it 5 lives that gets the Assist Block, or more? I didn't count.)

I find myself wanting this game in spite of myself. Not only am I jobless and low on cash, but I have very little time left to read before the semester starts. Why do I keep clicking this thread?

Hell the fuck no.

The older games were far harder. I played SMB2 and 3 for the first time last year and they absolutely kicked my ass. Don't even get me started on 2J. Sweet merciful Christ.

And no, it has nothing to do with the lives. The platforming in today's Mario games are easier and the gameplay engines are slower and more floaty. Can you say wall jump? Held items?

The goddamned world 3-B is fucking with me right now

so I see two pipes, one yellow, one red. i enter the yellow...woah, I just breezed through the level! But no star medals?

I enter the red pipe one...mind blown. Medals. Enemies everywhere.

Is this the first time a Mario game lets you choose two different ways to play a single level to completion?

I just beat it in 3 1/2 hours. There's definitely a lot more to do with the Secret Worlds and everything though.

I like it a lot, it's not the greatest Mario game, and it's kind of by the books but it still was a lot of fun. I especially liked the Ghost Houses.

Yeah, this was a really cool stage. Probably the best one I've played thus far. Plus they finally got a whole awesome level built around mini shroom

I think it's the first Mario that handles the choice like that (it's the same level either way aside from the red pipe being more difficult, right?), though there's been some experimentation with other ways of choosing, like that Chocolate Island level in World that changed depending on coins collected and whatnot

I clocked 10:30 to finish the entire game and
the star world
. Still have 5 star coins left to get, but other than that, done everything. I don't think I'll go for the million coins or the 1000 lives, although I guess I'll try Coin Rush a little bit.

My frustration lies in not being able to get a copy of this game in the store of my choice... A store that has advertised themselves as having the game. Admittedly, I was sceptical on this game initially, but now I'm more curious than anything.

1000 lives is easy. There are a few places you can do that trick where you bop a koopa shell into a step infinitely.

1 million coins ... yeah I don't think I'll ever get there either.

3 has some hard levels, yeah, mostly in Pipe Maze and Sky Land. The vast majority of SMB3 levels aren't much harder than what's in NSMB2. Yes the wall jump can save your ass where you would have died in SMB3. As a kid, SMB3 always kicked my ass. Then I bought it for VC a few years ago and played through it all the way to the end for the first time. The difficulty wasn't far off.

But you dodged the SMW thing. People love that game. It's super easy.
