How so? I thought it was fairly weak relative to the hype surrounding it, and taking into account Oda's involvement. Baron for me was much better structured, animated and directed, and had a much stronger emotional climax as well.

I'll agree that relative to hype surrounding it, Baron was better. Still though, as a very big One Piece fan, I can't remain completely unbiased about a massive far cry from everything about the franchise. As an experiment, Baron was a damn interesting movie, but it was also jarring as hell.

While the fights themselves disappointed me in Strong World, the entire first half of Baron did absolutely nothing for me. Maybe if I were to watch it again I'd have a different opinion, but the build up just wasn't there imo even if the payoff was really something else.

I'd say Strong World is like a condensed arc that makes the lore of the world more interesting, while Baron is an irrelevant side story that tried to be as different as it could from the source material. As I generally would prefer the former, it's why my OP movie ratings are something like Strong World>Dead End Adventure> Baron Omatsuri.

The archival work started when very old threads commenced to get deleted at AnimeNation Forums (nothing personal, just the way the forums worked). This was a lot of time ago, when the first ancient Eva Monkey Forums still existed and a good time before the second forums-'rebuild' and the posterior merge happened (I personally didn't visited the independent FGP Forum much in that era). Thanks to the preparation of the exodus (and automated posting scripts' handling made by) Ornette, ObsessiveMathsFreak & drinian along some habituals more, the process wasn't painful!

And yeah, 'Go Hikari!'... even the later hommage thread was cool:

Ah, speaking of the community, are they gonna do episode seven for the commentary anytime soon? I just realised a few weeks ago that they finally got their shit on for the Ramiel two-parter. Fanwankery aside, the commentary project is a real fun way of looking at the show, especially when they start including unused cuts from the storyboards and crap like that. I for one would have never realised Junichi Sato had worked on Eva were it not for them.

Fair enough. I see franchise movies differently than you, so that might be a reason. When I go to watch an One Piece, Naruto, Doraemon or whatever movie, I see them not as extensions of the franchise, but simply as movies first and foremost. That's the advantage of being stand-alone non-canon stories, that they can be enjoyed and analysed by themselves as a single product. Strong World is a bit different because it ties in to the manga and Oda was involved in production, so I watched it in that context.

What you see as an irrelevant deviation from the usual atmosphere of OP, I see as a fresh attempt to bring something else to our usual cast of characters. For me, Baron is Hosoda's movie more than One Piece's, and I see it as such.

One Piece Film - Strong World

Baron Omatsuri vs Strong World comparison

I guess now that I've seen this, I can finally compare it with the only other One Piece movie I was interested in enough to watch - Mamoru Hosoda's movie about Baron Omatsuri. In terms of "One Piece"-ness, I definitely agree that this is much closer to what One Piece represents in the manga, and there are better fights, and more cohesive flavor in terms of fitting into the world of the manga. But artistically in terms of making a beautiful and unique film, Hosoda still wins.

Am not sure if your talking visually here but movie 6 doesn't come close to Strong world in visuals.

Movie 6 has that trademark hosado Lod issues like it's running on a bad videogame engine(characters turn to blobs of colours if they take a few steps away from the camera).

Anyways I though Movie 4 & 9 was better then both.

One piece Movie 4 Dead end Adventure really nailed the exciting fun adventure feel and the crew banter was fun watching.

Strong World clearly has 1. a more detailed and inspired setting, 2. more animation budget, and 3. it doesn't look nearly as dated. (and the cylinder plant boss looked awkward as fuck)

I remember people telling me Baron was a better movie without having even seen Strong World to be eligible to make the statement.
