Sony: Over 100 Vita games in 2013, 1/3rd of game sales are digital, more

SNK Playmore needs to get on board. They're essentially indie in all but the fact they own a building.

KOF 13, KOF 98, KOF 2002, Real Bout Fatal Fury all on the Vita with good online. SOCK IT TO ME.

The average Vita owner uses the handheld 18.7 hours every week

This can't be real. I mean, it's more than 2 hours a day if every single Vita owner used it.

I haven't used mine since Fall, somebody has to be playing a lot :lol

I use mine about eight hours a day, but that's because I'm the new age representation of the Maytag Man at my job.

The Vita needs more (j)RPG's. Since two weeks I've been putting over 50 hours already in Persona 4 Golden. Bought it digitally by the way, because it didn't ship in large quantities to Europe.

But seriously though, as an avid RPG-gamer, I can say that I'd have no problem with this. I've enjoyed DQIX, Crisis Core, Golden Sun, Blue Dragon: Awakened Shadow, FFVII and Alundra on PSN, FFT, Tactics Ogre and most recently P4G. Sure, we need our Lost Odyssey's in HD, but I really embrace more RPG's on handhelds.

And cowbell. The Vita needs more cowbell.

Regular usage here. Mine gets at least an hour a day thanks to all the free stuff on PS Vita + huge backlog of PSP games that exist.

I'm not surprised by this at all. It's the best handheld I've ever owned.

My user satisfaction would be higher if they had bigger/cheaper memory cards, and a better system UI with folders. Other than that, it's an extremely awesome handheld, and I'm quite happy with the system, and the selection of games for it.

I always played with it a lot, but ever since I have gotten PS+ on it and have been travelling more, I am easily over 40 hours every week.

I use my Vita a lot. Game while watching TV, in bed, waiting for pizza to arrive, etc. I'm pretty much tethered to it in my apt. Rarely use it outside the house though.

I believe that 1/3rd stat. I haven't bought a single game in retail. I have two 4 gig cards and cloud saves.. I make it work.

18.7 hours per week is 2.67 hours per DAY on average.... That seems like a WHOLE lot and I have a vita. When does that leave time for the average vita user to play his PS3 that he/she likely also has? I wonder if they count the time that the system is asleep and periodically refreshing the LiveArea screens...

I agree best handheld I've ever had as well

Not Super Smash Bros. =
PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale SCEA 11/20/12 US T

Not Wii Sports =
Sports Champions 2 SCEA 10/30/12 US E10+

Not Mario Kart =
LittleBigPlanet Karting SCEA 11/06/12 US E

Yeah...Sony DEFINITELY didn't copy anyone last holiday season.

Best handheld for me as well.

I've bought only 4 games at retail, and about 12 digital, that stat sounds very credible to me. Probably average 10 hours a week with it or so.

Over 100 games sold in 2013. That's a solid start Sony, be proud of yourself.

I freakin' love the Vita, and am completely fine if it continues to get only 1-2 "AAA" titles a year--the PSN content has been decent so far, and looks to be amazing in 2013. Would love to see more PSN games become cross-buy or, at the least, cross-play; but perhaps this dream sort of come true with PS4-Vita Remote Play.

I sure do wish that SONY would release bigger Memory Sticks, as well as allow for the creation of folders in the O/S... not sure why they're dragging their feet on both of these things.

I really hope Sadness comes to Vita.

Why would you ever wish sadness on an awesome piece of gaming hardware? Someone revoke this person's GAF membership! I have a 3DS XL and think that 98% of the library blows, but I would never wish sadness on the device.

Outside of the launch games I bought (Lumines, Uncharted, Wipeout, MLB, and HotShots) every game I've purchased has been digital. If only larger and faster cards were available for a lower price I'd easily own twice as many games or more. My card isn't full, but I refrain from buying games or downloading even the PS+ freebies because memory management is such a pain. Transferring takes forever.

As such, Mesa jumped into the numbers. For starters, a third of all Vita games sold are sold digitally through the PlayStation Network, an impressive number.

Questions (that are unlikely to be answered):
1. Does this include Playstation Plus game downloads as a sale?
2. Does this include download only titles, such that buying one DL-only title and one retail would be "50% of games sold through PSN" talk?

If this is the download % for retail games only and not counting Playstation Plus, then it's very good results. Big IFs, though. Detailed clarification would be nice. :)

Pushing Vita as an indie platform is a fantastic way to increase sales. The triple A titles will come eventually when the user base is big enough. A B C really. This post is sort of useless.

I would guess less than 5 of those 100 titles are actually AA/AAA titles.

I don't know what's your definition for AA/AAA games.

but it should be more than 5 if we count the retails:

1- Tearaway
2- Soul Sacrifice
3- Killzone: Mercenary
4- Dragon's Crown
5- Final Fantasy X
6- Final Fantasy X-2
7- Epic Mickey 2
8- Ys IV: Memories of Celceta
9- Muramasa Rebirth
10- Warrior's lair (if not canceled xD)
11- Valhalla Knights 3
12- New Fifa
13- Ubisoft project (AssCreed?)
14- Project Siren's new project (gravity rush 2?)
15- SEGA PS3/Vita project (hoping for Valkyria Chronicles)
16- new Invizimals
17- Bend's next project

I hate to be sceptical, but I would wager that includes PSPlus games. If you give away to subscribers some of the best games available for the platform, then yes, digital 'sales' will be higher than normal.

I would love to be wrong though. Maybe.

They usually don't include PS+ numbers when talking about stuff like sales. Usually they say PS+ numbers are not included, like when they give the monthly top downloaded games. Actually I can't remember a time they included it.

Classic PR doublespeak and re-direction.

No addressing sales...no mention of retail 3rd party support...a very superficial interview.

I agree with that, they didn't give us anything, even the 1/3 DD numbers can be interpreted different ways. Part of the blame is on the journalist too who didn't ask for clarifications or better explanations.

I fully suspect they will get rid of the 4GB cards and introduce 64/128GB MCs this Fall. Hopefully an accompanying ~50% price drop will come on current MCs as well.

As far as folders on the OS it's one of the most requested things and with the OS "coming to your living room" that will be one of the many necessities the OS will need. Hope we get a FW upgrade sooner rather than later.

As I said below, it's simply not clear enough for us to see the health of the DD ecosystem on the vita. It can be real good or real bad. I'm pretty sure it doesn't include PS+ though.

1/3 of games are sold on vita can mean a lot of things and is open to interpretation. Does it mean that, on average, 1/3 of sales come from DD for retail games? That would mean the DD scene on vita is very healthy and a lot better than most here assumed. Or does it mean that, out of the total of all the games sold, 1/3 are from Vita? That would mean Vita's SW sales are not that healthy, retail or DD since we know retail sales are poor and we know there are a lot of games that are PSN only for vita. If all DD sales put together only amount to 1/3 of total sales while retail amounts to 2/3 then we know everything is bad. Or it can be a combination of both.

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...

Shit :( I feel you. Really sucks they spend 5 dev teams on non-indie titles. An AAA title budget could probably make for 10-20 highly polished Indies! Thats 50-100 more Indies we miss out on! Fuck >:-(

"we’re always worried about copycats"

You can't make this joke after last fall's PS3 lineup consisting of Not Super Smash Bros., Not Wii Sports and Not Mario Kart.

oh gawd their share a genre. Really those games are quite different mechanically.

Yes, this totally happens all the time in the industry.

To be fair at what other point in time was such a strategy either feasible or even attempted?

I'm glad the Vita has found its own little niche. The AAA titles are never coming but they're still making a go at having some content on the system.

I think a similar story has happened before, at least sort off.

The first iPhone as an example when released was meh! but only when apple opened up the platform for everyone and created what's known now as the App Store. indie software & games developer got in board first, then the device become cool & popular. Big publishers got in board later.

I'm not saying that's what gonna happen for vita though xD, still there are other factors, but a least there is a possibility to help it to stay relevant.

I see what you're saying, but there's no empirical evidence I'm aware of that any one, or two, or even five indie games can actually shift hardware. Successful indie games tend to be successful because they're on hardware that people already own for other purposes, or (in IOS' case) for an exceptionally broad software ecosystem.

That's not to say that indie games can't sell on smaller userbases - RCR sold best on Vita, and I believe Frozenbyte reported that Trine 2 sold better on Wii U than on PSN/XBLA - but that doesn't mean that those titles are a significant factor in hardware purchasing decisions.

Many Vita games are only available in digital form, so it should be no surprise that they're a third of the sales.

probably survey based. I wouldn't believe it unless it was actual data from the Vita

I seriously want to see an NHL game on my machine. Hell I'd love a robust NHL/Hockey simulation game that has a GM online connected component. I know I'm only dreaming though.

I hope that survey Sony conducted also informed them that those people using their Vitas daily (like myself) want larger-capacity memory card sizes.

There has to be some truth to this. I never bought nearly as many games for a single platform in the same period of time before. And most of them are from PSN.
I want to think I'm not the only one.
