Wow. I haven't laughed this loud at anything modern Simpsons in years. Good show, del Toro (though I'm surprised that he didn't slip in a Pacific Rim reference, but with the pace it was going, I probably missed it).

Slightly off-topic:

http://www.deadline.com/2013/10/fox-gives-the-simpsons-historic-26th-season-pick-up/

On the eve of its Treehouse Of Horrors XXIV, Fox announced it has picked up The Simpsons for an historic 26th season. The announcement was made by Kevin Reilly, Chairman of Entertainment at Fox. Meanwhile, fate of the voice cast — almost always a bone of contention at series-pickup time, apparently is not this time — they’re all expected to return, an informed source says.
I say bring it on.

EDIT: Beaten about the head and neck with a broken bottle.

Gipsy Danger fights Godzilla in the far background at the very beginning.

The Treehouse of Horror couch gag by Guillermo del Toro has been posted.

Eh, I don't think it's all that clever, it's just Simpsons characters as characters from Del Toro's films and other horror movies. As somebody said in the other thread:

Whoopty do, a bunch of movie references. Wasn't that the shit people used to bag on Family Guy for?

Aren't they supposedly killing someone this season?

I hope it's Maggie. Worthless character.

If it's minor characters then it's going to be Sideshow Bob or Krusty's dad, as mentioned on previous page.
If writers have balls, it's gonna be Abe. I would even put money on Abe. I trust shwo runners are finally willing to make change to stale formula.

Abe would be kind of mean. They did kill Homer's mother already. Selma or Patty on the other hand.

if they do away with jacqueline bouvier, it could have the potential to be a really good episode. it would make up for the sad job they did when mona simpson died.

did we ever find out what happened to marge's dad? he was a flight attendant (you could even say he was an american hero!) in the 60s, and then when marge was in high school he was old, fat and had curly brown hair from what i recall. but that's it.

Simpsons wiki says:
The cause or time of his death is undetermined. In an issue of the comic Simpsons Illustrated, Lisa reveals that Clancy died in a roller coaster accident. What is known is that his death occurred some time after Marge met Homer and before she married him. We know this from the only episode where his death is mentioned (Jazzy and the Pussycats), where Homer says he had bought Marge a "white-noise machine" to help her deal with her father's death. Clancy is also known to be dead because he never appears with Jacqueline and she can later remarry.
It is listed in the non-canon section though.

ah okay. so the show itself never addresses it. kind of a strange point to skip over for 25 years.

and another season? man, i thought 25 really would have been it. or that there would have been a second movie by now. hard to believe that the movie is actually six years old, too.

season 26 will bring the series to about 575-580 episodes. if they get to 27 they might pull off 600 episodes for the show. and if they do that, the simpsons will be airing new episodes while i'm in my 30s... which is similarly hard to believe.

When the Simpsons first debuted in short form on the Tracey Ullman Show back in 1987, I was the same age as Bart.

Naturally, I expect the show to finally end when I'm the same age as Homer.
So give it another 2-3 years... even the writers themselves can't seem to decide whether he's 38 or 39 these days (he was originally 34).

According to the No Homers Forum, the 26th season only has about 15 episodes ordered (the lowest amount since the very first) with about 7 holdover episodes from this production season filling out the rest, so it is very likely that next year's season could very well be the last.

Tonight's episode was rather inconsistent in terms of writing quality while being quite polished on the animation front.

The Dr. Seuss skit was refreshingly dark and the character designs were summarily great across the board. The Dead and Shoulders segment took a promising concept and failed to follow through on it with any sort of commitment. The Freaks parody was great... if you're familiar with the 81-year old film that inspired it. Otherwise, it was overlong and fell flat with a rushed gimmick ending.

It conveniently worked out that I was able to break each segment out into one of my designated rating categories.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - THOH XXIV Couch Gag - Horror Movie Homage directed by Guillermo del Toro
WORTH WATCHING - THOH XXIV Segment - Oh, The Places You'll D'oh!
NOTHING SPECIAL - THOH XXIV Segment - Freaks no Geeks (unless you're a fan of the 1932 movie Freaks)
AVOID THESE LIKE THE PLAGUE - THOH XXIV Segment - Dead and Shoulders

No new episodes until early November. In the meantime, enjoy The Walking Dead.

So many reused jokes. Last weeks episode had the same exact joke I posted in the Simpsons Community quote thread. And this weeks used at least two old jokes from Simpsons and Futurama.

Last weeks joke was a copy of the "The sum of the square roots of any two sides of an isosceles triangle is equal to the square root of the remaining side!" joke (The Simpsons: "The Last Temptation of Homer" I believe)

The Futurama joke was the one with the big eared guy talking to the big mouthed one. (Futurama: "Less Than Hero")

Aaaand.. I forgot the other one because it's so forgettable.

Also, I loved the Dr. Seuss part. Pretty good.

And that kids is how I met your mother.

Also, "AVOID THESE LIKE THE PLAGUE" should be spelled "AVOID THESE LIKE THE PLAQUE". At least in my opinion.

Just a heads up that new episodes return this Sunday night as the World Series wraps up this week. I've updated the opening post to pass along summaries for the next two unfortunately titled episodes (Four Regrettings and a Funeral and YOLO - aka 'You Only Live Once') which are up next to air despite this weekend's untimely passing of Marcia Wallace.

I'll believe it when I see it.

This was actually a good episode. I enjoyed it, I don't laugh out loud at the Simpsons any more but I did find it quite touching.

They cut Bart's mooning short. Are they still not allowed to show asses on the show?

Yeah, and the random Mr. Bergstrom appearance was kinda weird.

They had a scene with Bart mooning the camera just last season (Pulpit Friction).
Not sure where that silly rumor started from but I don't believe there's any truth to it.

Are they still planning to kill a character off or was it really that made-up extra they had a funeral for?
They're still planning on it.
It wasn't the fabricated extra from Four Regrettings and a Funeral.
My bet is that it'll wind up being Rabbi Hyman Krustofsky but we may not find out until Season 25.
Depends on when it airs.

Wow, I think this might well be the most offensive thing I've seen on The Simpsons in a long while.

The Itchem & Scratchem Show

There are no words to describe this clip.

Sorry. Maybe it's my demented sense of humour, but that stoner itchy and scratchy intro had me laughing.

That's the first time I've ever laughed at modern Simpsons.

edit: I'm not laughing because it's good. It's just fucking stupid. Far too stupid for anyone to be offended by it, anyway.

The Most Dangerous Yes Man
I hadn't watched this show in years, but I decided to watch it since the thread was bumped.

The Itchem & Scratchem Blow intro was fucking weird. It could be offensive as a depiction of Jamaicans, but I'm not sure.

I didn't really think it was funny, just a bad parody.

I hate jokes that just revel in how much of a stereotype they are instead of offering anything funny.
Tonight's episode was really bad. Easily the worst of the season for me.

That Irish Krusty had me laughing.
I'm always surprised how kind Bart was. I would have expected utter chaos when Skinner did that BS.

BatDan

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.
Itchem and Scratchem isn't really offensive, it's just lazy. You had this opportunity to show "Itchy and Scratchy in other countries", but only resort to stereotypes. You can do better than that.
