I was thinking the exact same thing.

That moment was the real winners moment. Balloons and everything.

That last song was seriously awful though.
Jena's probably gonna do better than he is.

Geeze, hyperbole much? Caleb's style may be old school, but he's a hell of a lot more talented than Taylor Hicks. I think that with the right songs (and his coronation song ain't one of them) he'll do just fine.

Jena on the other hand is so very much ready for the big time. She's gonna go far. She is definitely more of an Idol-type than Caleb, but at this point she didn't need the win as much as Caleb did.

But I'd argue Idol needed Jena more as a winner. It undermines the point of the show when other contestants do better than the winner.

Mostly agree, except I'd downgrade Kris to a B (his interpretive abilities alone aren't enough for a B+) and Carrie to an A- (she had some truly unfortunate performances).

And after last week's monstrosity, an F for Scotty would be generous.

Caleb's song sucked giraffe ass holy fuck.

Caleb's song is laughably bad. It sounds like something from another era, and NOT in a good way.

Well shit

Taylor Hicks pt. 2

His future non-success is written on the strained faces of every one of those judges

Here is this poor man's huey Lewis song that he probably rejected himself from 87.

Lol. The perfect ending to a mediocre season.
Caleb is another Taylor hicks.
He's not even emotional like Candice was last year.
Straight up mess.

I'm not even enjoying this last song. Ugh.

Taylor Hicks part 2.. Terrible.

Damn, no wonder Idol forced a female winner last year. These shitty guys are unstoppable.

Bit of a bummer on the finale. I'll vote with my wallet though. I'll own many songs sung by Jena and few if any by Caleb. She's the better talent.

Disgusting. Could not be any more displeased with this future-less tribute band singer winning.
Whaaaaaat is going on

All of you DO realize that both are tremendously talented vocalists that will be crippled by commercialized industry bullshit forced on them, right? Both of their "singles" are bad. Part of the reason Idol is such a guilty pleasure for me is because I know no matter how talented the victor is, it doesn't fucking matter; a good voice recognized by a national audience still has no bearing on how creative or talented said vocalist's musical career will be.

Neither Jena nor Caleb have their own original bands. They'll sing whatever bullshit they're given by the record labels. Sometimes those songs work out (Clarkson, Underwood, etc.), but most of the time they don't.

ALL OF THAT BEING SAID... does anyone have a link to the winner announcement? I didn't catch it :D

i think no one paid attention long enough to know that it was airing tuesday that's why. but lets be real, that tuesday episode was a waste. they didn't even perform for their life. it was just a wasted special to show off Jlo

You guys are nuts. Caleb is really talented. I think that with the right songs he can be current and do really well. Just because he's sung a lot of old-school rock songs and his coronation song sucks doesn't mean that's all he'll do.

He's WAY better than Taylor Hicks, David Cook, Lee DeWyze, and I think he'll do better than Kris Allen, too.

Crazy how the dude streak kinda started as soon as they allowed contestants to play instruments. WGWG started taking over. Caleb kinda broke that by not being one of those guitar guys.

Still like the show better with the allowed instruments. Especially some of the piano songs that Jena did.

Woot! Finally a rocker wins. Strongest top 2 in a LOOOOOOONG time.

1. Kelly Clarkson (A+) Rock goddess!
2. Carrie Underwood (A) Successful
3. Caleb Johnson (A) Could be great with a good band/songwriter
4. Phillip Phillips (-A) WGWG POWER! Seriously, Home alone is enough to put him up here.
5. Jordin Sparks (B) I liked a few of her songs
6. David Cook (B) Creative, on the show.
7. Ruben Studdard (B) Nicest guy, smooth voice.
8. Kris Allen (B) He didn't over sing all his song like...
9. Fantasia Barrino (B-) Baby Moma, lol
11. Lee DeWyze (C)
12. Candice Glover (C) who?
13. Taylor Hicks (D) entertaining up to a point
13. Scotty McCreery (NA) skipped this season, love him on the Framily commercials.

Could just do an overall ranking that subjectively integrates commercial success and talent (a combination of vocal ability and marketability which might hint at future success):

1. Clarkson
2. Lambert
3. Underwood (although she slaughters the above two in earnings I consider country music to be sort of orthogonal to everything else).
4. Daughtry
5. Hudson
6. Sparks
7. Philips
8. Cook
9. McPhee
10. Johnson (?) - not sure if rock sells but like his talent.

I would say Celeb is near the middle of the pack (maybe slightly higher) in terms of talent.

However, I struggle to put him anywhere besides dead last is marketability. Even Taylor Hicks had an outside shot at a career on Adult Contemporary radio.

Pretty sure Kelly is a much bigger overall success (globally) than Carrie.

I think he is referring to raw $$$ made.

Kelly tends to tour at mid size venues, and touring is where the real money is in music.

Yes. I think last year's earnings from AI alum were something like:

1. Underwood at like 30M+
2. Clarkson at ~7M
3. Lambert and Daughtry at ~5M
4. McCreery at 4M
5. drops fast from there

Welp....

Caleb's album expected to debut somewhere around 9-11K in sales.

We've reached uncharted territory. That's lower than even the lowest runner-up (Jessica Sanchez: 13,531), let alone winner.....which he will unquestionably be, if this prediction holds.

I wonder if the judges are going to be able to sit there with a straight face and claim this show still produces stars.

Good. He was such a horrible choice.

I was looking at the other runner-up sales and noticed that Kree never made an album and didn't get a label after Idol @_@ That's really fuckin sad because she has MEGA talent. I definitely would have got her album.

if no one claim the American Idol XIV thread I will.

New season begins this week with a 2 night premiere starting Wednesday.

1 hour wednesday
2 hours thursday

same hour and format for the following week as well.

vatstep

This poster pulses with an appeal so broad the typical restraints of our societies fall by the wayside.
This Wednesday?! That's like a week early, which isn't much, but it's just hard to believe it's already that time again.

I watched a couple of audition episodes last year, and didn't like the talent on the top 12. I miss X-Factor badly. We're going on year 2 with no Simon Cowell presence in America

I was gonna make a thread, glad I checked here first though. I was thinking of

American Idol Season XIV |OT| A Show Reborn

American Idol Season XIV |OT| One Night Only

I would really like one more season, maybe with Simon/Paula agreeing to come back for one last year.... with maybe an alumni in the last slot.

Randy can stay gone tho.

A rotating spot shared by Corey Clark, Antonella, and one of the Brittenum twins.
