So, in a video about a multiplatform game:
- He chose to include the 'Optimized for Series X' logo in the thumbnail of the video and 'Is this a mobile game' in the title of the video.
- He chose to comment 'I'm sorry Xbox people, I really am' while it's a multiplatform game. If he's a game engine dev, he should know that there is no reason to assume the PS5 version will perform or look better.
- He chose to mention Halo: Infinite in a video about Dirt 5
Yeah, it doesn't take a genius to understand this guy is generously taking advantage of console wars and is catering to fanboys, and giving this guy a podium is a shame.
That doesn't mean Dirt 5 doesn't have issues, it does. But the way he chose to convey his message is really bad. His involvement in game development is used to somehow legitimize/ give more weight to what he says, which is even worse.
Yep. He's just like...what's his name....Innocentlei guy or however you spell his name. I bet he was watching the botched IGN footage too, instead of the proper DF footage that provided the game more in its native display.
I'm glad these kind of channels are exposing themselves since it means one less source to bother with when it comes to content. There's better sources for non-fanboy analysis tbqh (and yes, you can have constructive criticisms while not delving into acting like a fanboy).
Oh yeah, fun fact. Innocenceii does the same thing Cherno does, i.e using their "position" as a means to try legitimizing framings of POV that would be noted as fanboyism without clinging to a positional badge. They do this because it cuts down on legitimate questioning from observers of their activity and the way they may tell half-truths, FUD, misinformation etc. by just trying to come off as knowledgeable.
None of this works on people who actually know at least as much (if not more) than these kind of guys. Unfortunately a lot of those individuals don't have YT channels, let alone YT channels of large enough size, to cut through this kind of stuff and critique the disingenuous-ness of these type of content creators.
EDIT: Also this is very much worth asking...are Cherno or some of these other content creators that very obviously are playing up (botched) DiRT 5 footage from a questionable source, as a dig against MS and Xbox...are they going to cover the Assassin's Creed: Valhalla footage that dropped yesterday? Which was also confirmed running on Series X?
I highly doubt they will, since it doesn't play into the narrative of trying to present Series X as a weak, terribly-made system (which is essentially what these people are trying to suggest without coming right out to say it). These people don't even have a fraction of the journalistic integrity or talent of gaming media personalities from the golden era. That's kind of disappointing.
