The PSP isn't doing badly, it's only tracking ~2 weeks behind 2005 right now. The only reason it looks bad is because the DS is tracking 12 weeks ahead of 2005 right now.

For the person asking what the GCN was doing in Japan at a similar time (16 months in), January 2003 it was averaging ~10K a week (not counting the first week of January).

According to GameFAQs, IE Institute developed and published it. Never heard of them, but it seems they have another DS game coming out today, and 2 more later in the year.

Right.

Yes. And it finally "jumps" over the 100k mark.

PSP still selling over 100k+ a month in Japan, it seems as if people dont understand that PSP doesnt have to beat DS to be deemed as a succes in Japan.

It is their first handheld, im shocked its doing this well to begin with. All they wanted to do is build a solid fanbase, and they have clearly done that, even in their weakest terriitory that is Japan.

Thie time 2 years ago it was Nintendo 99-100% of the handheld market in Japan, now its Nintendo 68%- Sony 32%.

If thats not good news for Sony, i dont know what is.

since DS/PSP-launch

NDS - 6,650,459 (57.35%)
PSP - 3,198,513 (27.58%)
GBA - 1,746,722 (15.06%)
(soure: klick)

Very nice for a system called Playstation :lol

(BTW: This week we have Nintendo Handheld 85% - Sony Handheld 15%)

The thing with the PSP is, even though it is "healthly" selling 35K+ units every week, the software sales is just poor to the extreme. 3rd parties just will not continue to make games for it if software sales continues this way.

Last time I checked, supposedly big titles such as Initial D Street Stage only sold around 75K, which is like 2.2% of PSP owners. This is just unacceptable.

In my opinion, the ones who hate BT the most are the ones who need it the most since the hate is quite irrational.

Yeah I'm wondering about that. Perhaps they're all buying UMDs, but FF AC's sales weren't that great either and S-E never bothered to saturate the stores with them.

I'm not sure what's going on. I'd like to give the PSP the benefit of the doubt and say that people are buying it for the pornographic UMDs and as a portable media player on their communutes to and from work. But those applications simply don't make a lot of money for Sony and for software makers.

Without a complete picture I hesitate to say it, but for a 3rd party software house, it does look like the PSP market is anemic at best and on the verge of collapsing at worst. The next 8 months is going to be really important. If games continue to perform the way they are, budgets are either going to be cut back or games will simply stop getting made and that will hit the hardware sales too.

no doubt true.

but obviously this doesn't help psp if the only handheld games that sell well in japan are made by nintendo.

Xbox 360 LTD - 100732 - it broke the 100,000 mark!

If it sells the same amount in every upcoming week that it sold this week, it will break 150,000 units (initial shipment) in 35 weeks.

At this rate, I bet they hope Sony KEEPS gaining in percentage.

Yep. A lot of people seem obsessed with this war over market leadership. I noticed this in the thread about the rumoured Xboy, where some Nfans speculated that this would benefit Nintendo somehow, simply because the Xboy would eat into PSP's marketshare more than it would into that of the DS'.

Fact is Nintendo should be very happy with the Japanese sales even if the PSP was selling double the amount*: more hardware sales, more software sales, more profit. Sony should be happy with their Japanese hardware sales, but their software sales remain problematic. Luckily, they're very healthy in the west.

*One valid argument is that this would indicate such a major growth of the handheld market that Nintendo should be unhappy about not claiming a bigger piece of that pie -- but nevermind, it's all hypothetical anyway. :D

Someone did a DS Vs PSP marketshare percentage thing.
But have you taken into account that the DS has sold more than the GBA in Japan, and therefore compared its market now against what it was??

I think Monster Kingdom was even worse. Monster Kingdom was being hyped up as a killer app for the PSP with some even calling it a "Pokemon Killer", but so far it has sold less than 20k in Japan. That is by far the biggest disappointment. Not to mention, the game had a high budget. So I'd imagine the game's developer and Sony(the publisher of the game in Japan) weren't very happy with those sales. I think the failure of Monster Kingdom is the most unacceptable so far as far as PSP software sales go.

Bingo. For example, Hudson effectively killed their GC publishing efforts in 2004 because they couldn't make a return on porting PS2 games (Tengai Makyo, Momotaru Denetsu, Bloody Roar, Bomberman, etc) that'd end up selling 20-50k ... that doesn't bode well for PSP's future, where ports are generally more resource intensive and selling even less on average. :/

At this point, about the only thing I can see saving PSP 3rd party software sales are PSone downloads via Sony Connect. Nothing else besides a few isolated incidents (Monster Hunter, Winning Eleven and SEGA Brain Training) has managed anything close to notable post launch and traditionally big Japanese brands (Rockman, Sakura Taisen, Suikoden, Ys, Metal Gear, Shin Sangoku Musou, etc) are bombing left and right. SCEI has to be in crisis mode at this point...

Yeah, didn't Capcom say that Rockman Rockman 2 and Irregular Hunter X 2 will fully depend on the sales of Rockman Rockman and Irregular Hunter? Well at this rate, I would say... sayonara.

Here's hoping Goku Makai Mura will sell. Otherwise, we won't be seeing this series in a while. Or, what's better for me and all of us Nfans... make it on the DS!

Which makes the PSP the official Port Station Portable.

a decent post overall, though your market share numbers seem a bit off. if you were just taking this year so far into accoutn it is correct but that is also ignoring the fact that there was a shortage for much of the beginning of the year. anyone have lifetime numbers to compare.

granted when you throw in the other two territories Sony's position improves significantly compared to the DS, however it must be noted that at least in the US up to recently the GBA was still selling stronger than both (almost conbined). Not sure about Europe.

Not posting this as proof that Sony is sucking or anything. Of course they have built up their base and whatnot. But we aren't talking about an XBox vs. GCN race here.. much more like PS2/XBox, if not Nintendo having an even larger lead than PS2 in that race.

One other thing that I don't think has been mentioned is one of Sony's main pushes, UMD, slowing down considerably. Towards the beginning of last year UMD was heralded a success and were unquestionably driving sales of the PSP to a good degree. With UMD sales cooling off and some studios even pulling support for the format, it will be interesting to see if PSP can maintain momentum with one of its aces in the hole being downplayed.

US & European software sales are enough to carry Xbox. Maybe they will be enough to carry PSP too. . .

Pretty similar, actually. By Media Create, between the two it's 67.5% DS/DSL and 32.5% PSP lifetime, or 66.1/33.9 for 2006. Remember for most of 2005 DS was either being outsold, or at least not outselling PSP 2:1 on a regular basis.

Indeed, I may make a graph of it (or someone else can feel free if they want) but if you compare DS to PS2/GBA (which were virtually the same) then the strong PS2 and GBA launches and solid sales put it well ahead of DS for the first 6-7 months, it is only really since about October last year that the DS has seen these massive sales and as we know Jan / Feb this year have been largely non-existant so in terms of LTD the DS hasn't actually done as well so far as all the hype seems to suggest, the important thing is the potential of just how much it can do in the next 3-4 months.

If you look at the chart I posted above, the PS2 was on about 5.2m at a similar stage to DS at the moment and GBA on about 5.6m compared to 6.7m for DS, if the rumoured 700k units in April all sell through (as expected) plus the original DS units then that could another million in 5 weeks (200k a week) and as long as sales continue to hit 100k all year (I actually don't think this is such a crazy idea) then this is where the damage will be done.

We could be looking at nearly 12m DS by December vs probably around 4.5m PSP, 8.7m PS2s and 9.3m GBAs in the same period (2 and a bit years ~110 weeks).

Can you pull the data of percentage change in market share relative to each other on a week to week basis?

By far the best legs out of any PSP game, but it is dropping out just like Tamogotchi. I think it will be out of the top 40 or so games by E3.

As expected, CoM still stays alive with a respectable 15,000. Hopefully it can keep that up for about 7 more weeks.

(b^.^)b to PSP. Over half a million in 3 months, and it's beautiful legs for Monster Hunter Portable.

(b^.^)b to DS for being a kick-butt system. I really do wish it'd start selling some 3rd party software or more traditional games (Castlevania, Kirby, Phoenix Wright, Yugioh, Children of Mana, Advance Wars etc)

Yeah i didnt really take into effect GBA for the Nintendo-Sony ratio, since i was under the impression it was completely (utterly) dead in Japan, but its still slightly breathing which is nice.

Im just kinda surprised how much healthier GBA sales are in US (oops) and have been for a long time vs how they are in Japan.
