I imagine there has to be a successor to Project Mirai at some point.
Maybe next gen.

But the games still sell alright, and even Project Diva isn't doing as amazing as it once was either (of course, still much better).

Higher sell-through usually leads to higher digital sales. Will be interesting to see that split when it comes out. Splatoon should have pretty good legs too.

Yup.

Of course there will a Project Mirai 3, but it will be on the 4DS. There really isn't anything left for them to do on 3DS, not with the successor most likely launching next year.

Considering its a new IP, on the Wii U, Splatoon FW was a hell of an achievement. Not only it is the fourth best Wii U FW, it almost beat New Super Mario Bros U on FW sales (and that was close to launch!).

I wonder if its all due to marketing, or something about it that resonated with the japanese public. As far as I remember, shooters were never big in Japan to begin with. I'm curious abut its legs.

Euhm, YTD, not YoY. Last year MK8 launched around the same time I think, and YoY can fluctuate depending on what is released that week. YTD is where we should look at.

Code:
+-------+------------+------------+------------+------------+------------+-------------+--------------+
|System | This Week | Last Week | Last Year | YTD | Last YTD | Difference | % Difference |
+-------+------------+------------+------------+------------+------------+-------------+--------------+
| WIU | 17.713 | 7.611 | 19.312 | 212.010 | 239.436 | -27.426 | -11.45% |
| 3DS # | 17.636 | 15.257 | 23.773 | 827.701 | 947.799 | -120.098 | -12.67% |
| PSV # | 13.046 | 11.775 | 13.957 | 441.711 | 580.819 | -139.108 | -23.95% |
| PS4 | 12.272 | 12.096 | 6.508 | 530.219 | 587.690 | -57.471 | -9.78% |
So the only thing I pointed out was that the WiiU was keeping it's YTD numbers steady, as low as they may be.

As a % of their previous YTD, the 3DS and PS4 are about on par with the WIU. The numbers are low though, so a little noise could push it either way I guess.

I wonder same considering budget needed to make this game is far less compared to XCX which had less marketing but had poor sales compared to Splatoon FW and legs are gone. May be Nintendo fan base like cartoon and family games more than matured and dark games. Lets see splatoon legs but still i doubt that its having this success mostly due to marketing. Seems like these days games sell well only if they have multiplayer and fun factor so its hard for AAA developers to survive if they want to aim for unique experience and single player focus.

Is that the best launch of an XBone game week 1 outside of launch? (or indeed with launch).

Normally "big" games launch with about 3000 sales right?

Outside of launch maybe. If you include launch then Titanfall was bigger, along with a couple others.

XCX will have its marketing in the west as that is where the original found its successes as well. I don't know what their expectations were for it in Japan, but they didn't give it much promotion, but its about on par with its predecessor but this time on a truly dead platform unlike Xeno on the Wii.

Good debut for Splatoon. Witcher 3 also having strong second week.

As for WiiU hw sales I really don't see how 10 k bump is that great. Splatoon is completely new ip based on genre that WiiU lacks and the console gets meager 10 k bump despite the strong sales for the game (not to mention all other platforms rose from the last week too so the bump from Splatoon was little bit lower actually). That means that Splatoon mainly sold to the same audience that buys all other Nintendo franchises too so Nintendo really wasn't able to widen the customer base of WiiU even with pretty unique game. After the first reports of strong Splatoon sales I was certainly expecting more considering the nature of the game.

So Freedom Wars remains the highest debut for a new IP this generation? Lol. Nintendo should have shipped more inklings!

Lol. I'm not sure if some of you really believe that or if you're just saying that to feel better. There isn't going to be any big marketing campaign for the game in the west. NoA probably doesn't even consider it a major title. More like something they're obliged to release to get it out of the way.

How did all that Bayonetta 2 marketing go? :p

You mean retailers should have ordered more ?

About Xenoblade ...How do you know they wont spend marketing budget on XCX when the Wii and 3DS game sold quite well in NA and the WiiU userbase tend to be more gamer focused to begin with. Nintendo doesnt have many cards left to play on WiiU and i dont see them localizing a big ass JRPG just to let it die and be done with it when it clearly being build up as their big RPG franchise.

Then again "big" marketing campaign is a relative - of course they wont spend Smash Bros. or Zelda marketing money on it, doesnt mean they will just let it die either. Vena just stated that there will marketing, not that they would run 30 seconds tv spots on every mayor sports event.

I have a question that hopefully someone in here could answer.

Earlier, some people at GAF were saying that Splatoon was on track to potentially end up being the best selling shooter of all time in Japan.

Was this idle speculation, or is it actually a possibility?

How does Splatoon's launch compare to the launch of other shooters in Japan?

Because Nintendo has no idea how to market such games. People think that marketing is just taking a ton of money and spending it on TV ads or whatever, but that's really not the case. You have to understand the audience you want to attract and know the best way to get their attention. Nintendo has shown time and time again that while they're more than willing to fund and publish games like this to diversify their portfolio, they simply do not know how to sell them.

Actually Duckroll,...... I don't even know what is the proper way to advertise Xenoblade outside of Japan here. What marketing move should they do? Trailer? Demo? Extra incentive like FE and SMT4? There are limit on how much they can promote certain title there. Especially when they are niche title.

This is what it looks like for a game to be a hit now? These are "decent for a tiny developer like Falcom" numbers. Worse, even. After seeing the game exploding all over Nico Nico Douga I thought I would see something at least in the 250 range.

It really is over.

Edit: Even if there weren't 200k to sell, it didn't reach 150 either.
It's the best selling new IP on the Wii U ever and it pretty much sold out on its first shipment. And since it's a heavily advertised Nintendo game, it'll probably continue to sell decently for quite some time.

The best selling debut for a Falcom game in recent years was Sen no Kiseki which had just under 150k across two platforms. This was from one of their longest running series (11th game in the Legend of Heroes series) and it was on two systems that are much more popular than the one system that Splatoon is on (PS3 & Vita vs Wii U).

Yeah, I guess an open world console RPG with MMO style gameplay and online multiplayer features is totally niche. No one wants those. Yup.

LOL at Wii U being the best selling console of the week in Japan. Until you realise the best selling console sold only 17k and you cry your eyes out.

Splatoon did great, however. By nowadays standards, I mean. Hope it can inject some little life on the deceased Wii U body for the nest weeks as well.

Hopefully now nintendo will make more big new IPs like this and then actually market them
May heavens hear you. The possibilities are endless. Nintendo needed a good wake up call, and they need to stop skinning every new game with Mario.

I think thats the case for many of their collabo titles but XCX is a first party title that more or less already has found its small but seemingly growing audience. So they wont start at Zero and wont be a Devils Third or W101 situation where everything is lost before the game is even launched.

The people or audience you speak of dont own a WiiU to begin with and likely wont be buying one because of XCX - they will have to market the game to current WiiU owners as well as fans of the first game. XCX will likely be a critically acclaimed open world JRPG - likely the first and last one at this scale on WiiU. They wont be able to challenge WiiUs stigma with one game, but i feel its unfair to compare Xenoblade with their other Wii(U) era bombas like Tact of Magic. Its the one game series that kinda can stand on his own without being tied to a popular character or EAD involvement.

As an (expensive) first party prestige project i dont think they will just drop it on the market and hope for the best - sure the market might not respond as favorably as Nintendo might hope...but we are talking about Nintendo intentions here and so far they haven shown to be quite invested in the IP and its future.

At this point we dont know much about XCX marketing plans for the western release - so calling them out at this stage seems unfair. Did you have any issues with the way they handled the marketing of Xenoblade n3DS in the west ?

It would need some pretty great legs, MW3 is ~525k and BLOPS2 is ~580k if you combine SKUs. Largest single SKU is 336k. Who knows though, some Nintendo titles have shown similar legs in the past.

Do you guys think there's any chance of Code Name STEAM doing okay in Japan? I don't know how it sold in the West (probably awfully), so I hope it can at least do better in Japan... despite the theme of the game not being precisely Japan's favorite :x
