So there were actually people who didn't think that Nintendo would try to build heavy social network connectivity into the Wii U? I expected something along the lines of what was presented here.

I hope Nintendo having the miiverse isn't their answer to social networking. Or rather I hope the wii u will still feature twitter, youtube, and fb integration along with the wiiverse social network.

So Iwata said you can see messages from people in your country or those who speak your "language." Because of his accent it's kinda ambiguous if that should've been plural - anyone else thing MiiVerse will support bilingual people/households?

Only if we can change language settings per account.

I hope so too. I have friends with diverse tastes in things and so being able to share games (and apps etc) I am passionate about with them is important to me. It may even get people to try out the Wii U who would have just given it a pass!

Yes. Please! Complete nintendo setup in black! <3

I just hope it's matte black on not glossy! Overall, that video presentation has really got me hyped for the Wii U as there's definitely a lot of social potential for all those apps especially that Miiverse and smart phone stuff.

The gameplay sneak peaks also bodes well for the conference re-reveal as well. Nintendo is really hitting it's straps and engaging with the community now, for showing off all this stuff and taking on feedback. Really good to see Nintendo coming out of the blocks and giving gamers what they want.

The online sounds a bit iffy to me, (although I really need to see more of it obv) but I like the Demon's Souls type thing, and the message board/video chat seemed cool. I don't understand the need for a Classic/Pro controller, but it looks like it's well designed (even if the sticks are in a weird place). Could someone explain the "Miiverse" thing? I don't really get what it is...is it just like a place to view people's Miis or something?

Sod off. Seriously. You didn't do anything other than make guesses, other people guessed things like the NFC icon before you, and you don't actually say anything about a Wii U Pro controller (you wrongfully label it a Classic Controller).

Furthermore, you covered ALL the bases with the "no system redesign" by saying it could also have a slight, or a full redesign.

Stop fishing for attention.

It's a visual representation of who's currently playing what on Nintendo network, with opinions and feedback presented to the viewer, presented in an intuitive, instantly-understandable manner.

I hate the idea of having to own several different types of controllers for one console. They had the right idea with the TV Control button because we like the idea of controlling everything from one simple place but then we have to juggle around all this plastic. Meh.

You really only need the GamePad, the other controllers are just there as options.

The Miiverse seems to be an alternate visualization for social lists of contacts. Note that Iwata said a more familiar interface would always be available on the controller's screen.

Miis from your friends list, and public groups, mill around the games they're playing or talking about to transmit an idea of who's doing what and where. It actually seems rather like the large battle lobbies in SoulCalibur V, come to think about it.

It appears to be a massive expansion of the Mii lobby concept from the Wii that didn't really do much. It appears that you possibly click on people's Mii when they're gathered around a particular game or app to send messages, join the game, get info on what they're playing, and so forth.

Until we see more, I'm betting that all of this is just another social layer and interaction tool built on top of what is actually a fairly conventional online console system. The usual messaging, friends list, game invites, etc would be handled through the screen pad interface. The one where you saw messages being typed and sent. Plus the internal Nintendo Network twitter-like functionality, and Facebook (Nintenbook) concept.

Is there more information about the message feed? What messages are going to appear there? It looked like from the ad that the guy was playing a game and posting to the game's "wall". So I wonder if that's based on your current activity or if you can choose on the fly.

Yah to the Ninbook and Nintter, like we're not confronted enough by social media. I don't want more social media or another TV remote. I want a damn decent gaming console.

This guy better be in Smash Bros Wii U.

Sorta reminded me of him.

I'm sure that is what the system will be. Of course with the likes of XBL and PSN, you know Nintendo had to step forward eventually, and thats what this is.

Vita has you "pulling" pages away for transitions, 360 Kinect has you talking to your system, and now the WiiU will let you actually control the TV like a normal remote.

Thank you. That sounds like it could be interesting. Not sure how I feel about that being the screen you see when you first boot up the system though. I would like a more traditional menu like the current gen systems have.

I think you can swap the traditional/Miiverse displays between TV and controller

From what I understood in the video, a Wii-like menu system on bootup will show on the gamepad, and the Miiverse will show on the TV.

I liked the presentation!!

I actually liked the skit. The acting was awful but I actually like the features and I laughed at some parts.

- Miiverse looks insane and awesome!! :O
- I liked the twitter idea, and the fact that WiiU gamepad can be used as a remote.
- Black controller looks awesome!
- Pro controller is just like the 360 controller haha.
- Mario game looks slick.
- Is that zombie game actually real, or just a concept game?

Also, I am pumped for the conference on tuesday!! 1 hour of WiiU software presentations? :O

All we have to go by is what is in the video. From what I can tell, there will be a messaging system and some sort of social integration in the system menu. The system menu will show random tweets from people who are playing the available games, including games you haven't bought.

The messaging system looks like a version of Twitter with single-level threading, judging by the numbered speech bubbles on each tweet. They'll be able to integrate the messaging system into games, the example given in the video is showing tweets when you die in a Mario game from other users who died in the same place, and tweets are integrated into the world map showing comments on the visible levels. You'll also be able to mark your tweets as spoilers, which I'm guessing means that they won't be visible in the system menu or via in-game integration. I think this is what the vague comments about "time" and "space" were referring to - you're seeing comments from people who played the game in the past and were at the same point where you currently are.

The biggest unanswered question I have is where the social graph is coming from. To initially populate your contacts there probably will be a way to import from Twitter and your email address book (obviously not from Facebook). After that I think the success or failure of Miiverse depends on how easy it is to fluidly add people to your Miiverse contacts. This being Nintendo, they're going to be very conservative, but I hope that their recent difficulties have emboldened them somewhat on this front.

Yeah, i hope he doesn't take them too seriously.

Neogaf has his most loyal followers/true believers so he won't get upset. Just check some of the posts on here. People getting excited about anything Nintendo branded. Reminds me of Jobs witnesses ermmm... I mean Apple fans.

I liked it much better the second time I watched the video. Actually chuckled at its silliness. The first time I was just trying to figure out the actual Wii U stuff and the extreme cheese was kind of distracting/annoying.

Nothing wowed me but it's a nice base to build on. That said I think controllers with a screen will be available for all next gen consoles at some point. I would be shocked if MS and Sony didn't have their own version of the pad controller in the works. It fits in too well with where tech and specifically game consoles are going. I don't know if it'll have wii like success but I think people underestimate the appeal of the pad controller to your average consumer. It's perfect timing to catch the "Smart", connected, tablet wave.

Iwata mentioned "alone together" and how the Wii U will help solve this issue. But wouldn't the pad just contribute to the issue. someone gaming on a private screen isn't exactly engaging with others around them.

I also liked the fling/flick to screen feature. I know there are variations of it availble, but few people have the proper setup to use it.

To play devils advocate here, if they put a curtain on the TV screen and unveil goatse to a funny little fanfare, I think that's the kind of thing that can bring families and the world together

has calmed down a bit.
posted already? Iwata reading comments during the presentation.

I only caught the comments at the end of the live stream, but they were pretty mixed. I don't know if he expected enthusiastic responses, but that's not what he got. Stock took a hit after E3 last year and analysts are expecting another drop after this E3, so I'm sure he's hoping that the reaction to the WiiU is significantly better than last year. The pressure's on, let's see if the software/hardware can deliver.

Initial reception was definitely firmly in the realm of confused / unenthusiastic. But I'm increasingly getting the impression that in the hours since the presentation ended, people have started to "get it" and excitement is brewing.

Until we've seen them show games and interaction off more at E3...it's kinda hard to figure how Wii U is really going to end up in your living

I dont understand how people cant get what Nintendo is aiming for or how the controller works. Hell, I still dont understand how people didnt get that it was going to be a brand new system last year's E3.
