I don't like shipment numbers, there is always the risc that it's a move to stuff channels and look good. so I won't felicitate on that.
But on the other hand 8.4 million is just crazy.
To be fair yea about 1.8 million of those were not sold. But the only figures we have for PS2 are WW shipment numbers so we have no sold through to compare.

So apparently 8.4 million is the biggest unit shipment Sony has ever had beating out PS2's 8 million shipped in 2002. o_O

Considering how much less this holiday season PS4 sold in US and in Japan compared to PS2 during 2002 holiday season PS4 is killing it in rest of the world. Of course going by sold trough numbers it seems like they overshipped a bit but nevertheless. It's not that rare during holiday seasons either especially for market leader.

PS2 number refers to shipments from factory, so isn't the same type of number as this 8.4m for PS4.

It's possible that PS2 sales at that quarter in 2002 was bigger if Sony had stock in warehouses and sold to retailers in this period.

The problem was not about PS4 overshipped, but with PS2 undershipped that quarter.

Sony has sold trough ~8.5 million of PS2, but they shipped only ~8 million.

Btw, we Know PS4 BF+December was ~5.7 million. Should be >7 million Nov+Dec, which is still a massive success.

Well that puts things in perspective but like you said still extremely strong sales.

Shipments from factory means units shipped from the factory. So any units shipped from a factory to a retailer WW would be counted. It's "sold in" before we called it "sold in."

Was PS2 really still supply constrained at that point? TBH I can't recall.

Isn't the same thing. All units that left the factory was counted, even those there weren't sold to any retailer in the quarter.

Now just units that are in fact sold are reported. Sony changed his method of recording sales in 2007.

During the 4th quarter of calendar year 2002 the cumulative Production Shipments of PlayStation 2 Hardware reached 49.59 million units with a total of 8.03 million sold in for the entire quarter.

This consisted of 1.5 million Production Shipments to Japan distributors, 3.3 million Production Shipments to North American distributors and 3.3 million Production Shipments to European and PAL distributors.

The total amount sold through to end users exceeded 8.5 million worldwide across November and December, which included shipments made and recognised prior to the quarter.

So you're saying that less of the manufactured units are counted now as opposed to the 100% of manufactured units when PS2 figures were being reported? I think I must've misread your first post. It seemed like you were saying the opposite.

So they sold through more than they shipped? That would mean that there was significant amounts of stock on shelves waiting to be sold as well.

A good example for illustrate is what happened with PS3 (Sony changed the report method starting april 2007).

At the end of march 2007 PS3 shipment was at 5.5 million, later Sony provided updated numbers with the new method and PS3 number was down to 3.5m.

So 2 million units left the factory but was in transit or in warehouses for be sold later.

Had no idea the reporting changes lead to that much of difference. That's a huge difference.

Until 2006 Sony reported shipment production... that means everything Sony produced in their warehouses was counted.

2007 and after they changed to report shipment to retail... that means only what was shipped (ordered) for retail is counted.

The difference to be fair is just a matter of months like the PS4 produced today will reach the retail in few months... so the PS2 shipment numbers we have are like what will be shipped to retail in the next few months... the difference will be ~2m only to be fair.

AMD, EA... every source is showing that 18 million figure for Xbox One not just makes sense but also can be a little conservative.

The console is doing Ok, is not a huge success like PS4, but is not a failure either.
Agreed only thing with MS is that their gaming strategy has been predicated on being the leader in major markets. Now that they aren't they will lose more and more ground as 3rd party exclusives go away. TR was a disaster and I would be surprised if anyone else follows suit. Titanfall 2 last gen would be Xbox exclusive, this gen it will come to PS as well.

So it will be interesting to see what MS 1st party comes up with and what partners they can find with independent studios for more games to counter that.

Sony Q3 results are in
8.4 million units sold in for Q3
37.7 million units sold in by end of 2015 WW

So given the sell through figure of 35.9 million we can say that ~ 1.8 million units were on shelves at end of year. That a lot given the Sony's previous tightly managed shipped:sold ratio.

You seem upset. I know what you need! A song! Sing it with me now

MAU land is your land
MAU land is my land
From the Windows desktop
To the Surface store stand.
This land was ads for MAU and Me

There there don't you feel better now?
You seem to think I'm an Xbox fan for some reason, and I vastly prefer EAs MAPS, to MSs MAUs anyway. :)

Also looks like other guy gave up oh well.

I don't think tpe are the issue. I think trust is.

They aren't even pushing their marketing tp games. Dragon Age and Lego were left to die. I didn't see much Rainbow six.

There marketing for tp is bad, needs to fire a bunch of them and try a new strategy.

That's not true at all. See BioShock.

Also, EA published Titanfall. Not Microsoft. EA will publish on anything if management feels the sales are there.

i'd love to see how this is hurting anyone.

I feel that if anyone had that data, it might just be MS, who seems perfectly okay with how things are
We are talking console sales here. When customers see that nearly all xbox 1st party games also come to Win10 it might lower the desire to bux a box.
But this is just my personal opinion.

Example: If Halo comes to PC it might make a lot of money, but for the Spencer Device Group this would be counter-productive.

That's the million dollar question that decides about the future of Xbox as a console.
Slightly dramatised maybe.
The next XBox will almost certainly be something similar to an AppleTV. Nadella said he kept XBox around because gaming is important to mobile, and mobile is important. Their next TV device will be something designed for streaming and leveraging whatever mobile ecosystem they're cooking up, and the Windows ecosystem in general.

They may additionally do some kind of Steam Machine thing, offering "XBox Too!" stickers to PC manufacturers who meet some minimum performance spec, but selling their own hardware at cost — if they're lucky — is just a waste of time and money for them. That's why they don't report hardware sales anymore; it's a legacy business, and they'd rather you shift your focus to their mobile and PC offerings.

Not my fault that you refused to discuss. Oh well, I'm still waiting to hear your counterarguments. And if you're wondering what fallacy you made this time....

OT: Impressive shipment numbers, though that's a huge gap between those and sold-through numbers.
Notice how no one is backing you up but they backed me up as soon as you had a post directed at me? There's a reason for that, you won't figure that out of course. but get that last word in, being immature as you are, you have to have it.

But what games are you talking about? Only recent game to pc was tr and that was always going to pc.

I'm not sure what's going on. Aren't you going to try to convince me why cutting the price of the 360 and PS3 will lead to "free easy money", or are we playing "Spot that Fallacy!"? Because you just did an Argumentum ad populum. But the funny thing is, who's they? As I remembered, everyone else disagreed with your proposition. Why are you resorting to making things up because you can't make a convincing point, so don't blame me for your argumentative deficiencies. In fact, I told you I already countered your points, but you were too lazy to look back in the thread, so who's the immature one? :)

So, Another48Hours, which fallacy will you make next? :D

Several big third parties games come to PC and these are the games that moves console hardware sales.

I don't think some Microsoft games appearing on PC has significant impact on Xbox One sales.

The $99 console argument is still going?

Hint: Everyone wants you to buy the new system, not the old one. The real free money isn't $99 and free online, it's $50 paid online for 5-6 years with no hardware costs and you can sell other services for.

I dunno if it can really even be defined as an argument. It's like one dude trying to argue for it and getting mad when all of his logical fallacies get pointed out...
