Official February 2008 NPD Results - "Last Gen" > "Next Gen" - Industry Gone Wild.

Speevy may be right

PS2 is a special case, it's the perfect of example of a console that was released at the right time and the right price. It got a year's head start on it's competition and is also benefiting from the expansion in the industry that is occurring right now. As long as sony continues to keep it on store shelves for another 2-3 years (has it officially reached $99 yet?) it m ay be hard to match.

The wii is the only contender, but thats only been out for a year and ANYTHING CAN happen between now and the next 6 years. What NEEDS to happen is for nintendo to improve their manufacturing and supply issues.

the market is developping, expanding. its not like a constant thing for 20-30 years. i might offend some people, but to me, every comparision with older gen, older console, they are all just useless, because the reality that the market is living right now is totally diferent. we can't predict the future based on the past on this subject. we really should just wait and see.

Microsoft has a situation on their hands if this continues. They've let the price of the Xbox 360 remain too high for too long and that, mixed with the perception of unreliability in hardware, is going to cost them the one region they actually thought they would dominate.

It's time for a pricedrop and I don't mean the $30 variety.

$199 would be impossible to resist.

but I didn't draw any comparisons :headscratch: , I was simply stating the factors that lead to the PS2's succes (that is still evident 'til today)

DQS tanked :\

Even NMH did better!

FUCK YEAH NMH!

Square Enix needs to advertise their shit for one. Ever since DQS came out, our store only got six copies, since then we've only sold two and both of those were by me after customers asked what the game was like. You'd be surprised that for the most part motion control + swordplay was a clencher on both accounts with one of them comparing it to Zelda and how it didn't have what they expected.

The whole Wii remote scheme is a draw for the Wii and I don't get why games that really emphasize that draw rarely get any marketing push outside gaming mags and gaming sites by those publishers. Most gamers aren't going to buy a DQ game that is commonly referred to as a "My first Dragon Quest" experience, but if you really want to push these kinds brands beyond someone like me you kind of have to put the word out there BEYOND places where people like me "roam."

Very solid NPD. What more is there to say? Next month will be a bit more exciting. And by exciting I mean tons of bitter fanboy tears that I come to expect, damn it.

Wonder if Nintendo finally killed off the GBA. Took them long enough.

The sales are incredibly high. If these numbers continue in the next few months, my prediction for the year will be way off, especially my PS2 prediction. :(

360 LOST ODYSSEY MICROSOFT 8-Feb 203.6K 7
I am pleased with these two developments. Be nice for Lost Odyssey to sell something like 500k in the US. On the 360.

And DMC4...I made my contribution ^_^

Yes. Lost Odyssey sold better than I expected. I thought it would bomb, despite the significantly better ad campaign compared to BD. I didn't have faith that a game like this could sell on the 360, but hopefully this will lead to more JRPG's on the 360.

1) If Devil May Cry 4 is any indicator, Metal Gear 4 is going to be a MONSTER. That's when I'm jumping in and I know for a fact that's when a lot of other people are going to buy a PS3 as well. Expect a significant hardware boost in June along with a really impressive attach rate for Metal Gear 4. That bundle is genius.

2) The supply constraint is just a horseshit excuse. They sold 254K and I seriously doubt that they would have moved 300K+ if they had a regular flow of consoles being placed on the shelves. I expect PS3 to probably win March as well.

3) No one will catch Wii this year. Or maybe ever.

4) PSP is doing great since the slim version has launched.

The attach rate for GTAIV is going to be solid for the PS3, but people are fools if they think it will come anywhere close to the 360 attach rate.

Microsoft will be bleeding money if they do a price drop and it looks like that's what they're going to have to do. Tack on the red ring of death debacle to yet another price drop and they're getting hammered on the hardware end.

Dear God, that's just awful, the PSP software market is pretty much dead if even a AAA first party title is struggling to reach 10K. Even B grade niche titles should be selling more than that.

Wipeout Pulse is AAA? That's new to me.

I wonder if Army of Two could approach DMC4 sales levels on the 360?? Looking at mygamercard.net stats, Army of Two(76,229) already has about the same amount of users as Turok(80,234). Turok has been out since Feb 5 and Army of Two has almost caught it in a week and a half. Turok sold 200k in Feb, so I wonder if Army of Two could approach 300k for March???

DS's software attach-ratio is more than 6!! That's an amazing feat for a handheld and just shows how the Top 10 doesn't really even begin to scratch the surface and show the real picture.

They were supply constrained for three out of four weeks in Feb according to retail posters on this site. No one knows the future, but on the other hand, there's really no evidence to back up your assertion here.

The hardware is going to be two and a half years old in March. They've dropped the price on the thing $50 during that time. You are delusional if you think they will be anywhere near bleeding money if they drop the 360 another $50 in the next month or so. Where do people come up with this shit?

Eh. The Ds is in its fourth year on the market. A 6 attach rate is not really that impressive at this point in a life cycle. It semi is because we are talking about a handheld, but nothing to be amazed about in the bigger sense of things.

What bigger sense? Why would a high attach rate on a monstrous selling console not be that impressive?

So how did Microsoft compute that 7.2 attach rate? Divide number of games sold in Feb by the number of consoles sold in Feb? 1.8m/250k?
(they did it this way several times before)

Comparing only users in the US, Army of Two already has more users than DMC4 and Turok.

Wii beat the 360 in ratio in December due to Wii Play. Without it the 360 wins by as much as it loses with it. If you wanna keep claiming that as something meaningful, go ahead, but I doubt anyone cares.

Who gives a shit what it should be counted as; it's all moot and pointless. It is what it is. It counts and that's that.
Wow... I've never realized before that NPD took away our free will as human beings.

So if tomorrow NPD decides to count PSP under both hardware and software, because it offers a web browser built in... you'd buy that with no objection?

* The Xbox 360 platform now has a U.S. installed base of 9.6 million; the PS3 has 3.8 million, the Wii has 8.1 million. (February NPD data)

* February NPD data shows a new Xbox 360 software attach rate of 7.2, nearly twice that of the PS3 or the Wii. (February NPD data)

I thought that was US 360 lifetime attach rate which would put total US 360 software sales just under 70million units. PS3 = 14 million, Wii = 29 million.

But it could be just February's.

My post was clear. The bigger sense in that it is only high in regards to a handheld, which have been stigmatized for years for having absurdly low attach rates.

Actually, reading that again, it has to be a monthly attach rate. The specific use of "new" contradicts the idea of this being an LTD computation. It's new software to new consoles.

With regard to how NPD categorizes things, of course it does. We don't have free will regarding the decisions of another entity.

has to be yeah, though i do think that gaf are always wrong to turn their nose up at that figure. people buying a new console buy more titles for it than those that already have a system in my experience... not that i think that makes the install base less important than the new buyers... i'd just love someone to do a break down of how much software sales in any given month go to the people that bought the system that month.

either way, a good month for PS3 software, even better for 360 software if Sonycowboy is to be believed.

the DMC sales are interesting, but so are the continued COD4 sales. we'll start getting a picture next month of which kind of gamers are buying which system, and if the 360 was really supply constrained (personally i believe it was...).

The best thing about this month is clearly that LO didn't bomb. Still, it not even managing to beat a 4 month old FPS makes me sad.

You now belong to FMT.
Sony needs to get out their last gen big dogs...

DMC4 shows that.

When GT5, Socom, MGS4, GTA4 and other PS2 classics come out, its gonna be some serious hardware and software sale changes.

good numbers all around

Anyone who bought a ps2 within the past 2 years has no intention in jumping into next for another 3-4 years from now.

Have there been any stats released on how many of these PS2 systems sold in the last two years were bought by households that already own one or more PS2 systems?

It shouldn't, because the circumstances and sales numbers are highly different.

Unless you're talking about Japan which would be weird for an NPD thread.
